Kerkvliet?

I echo a lot of the advice, I used to go there a few times a year for business and took my wife once, great city!
I have a question about the Bluebird Cafe, we went back in 2011 for an In The Round night and it was great, very intimate atmosphere! But that was before the TV show Nashville showcased it. Is it still as good of a place to visit or has it gone Hollywood?

If you want something different from the Honky Tonks, try Skull's Rainbow Room in Printer's Alley. It's a short walk from Broadway. Great craft cocktails and surprisingly good food. I can only take so much Honky Tonk.

My friend, I've got all kinds of suggestions. My old KC friends and many of my retired Army friends enjoy coming out this way every couple years or so to partake of the scene on lower Broadway (Honky Tonks with live music, fun and friendly people, and a festive party atmosphere that runs well into the morning regardless of the day). It's just a great place to get away to! I would definitely stay as close as possible to lower Broadway and then travel as needed to other destinations simply because if you're between the age of 21 and 81, your night will eventually end on lower Broadway, whether you intend for it to happen that way or not. Definitely choose a hotel close by. :)

Shoot me a buzz if you ever have questions or are curious about any of the venues. Below are a couple links just to give you a start point. :)

good stuff. Thanks!! I will Check this out

Feel free to shoot me a message too if you have questions. I don't live there but have been to Nashville countless times on business trips, plus a vacation with my wife.

It's a really fun town. I don't care for country music but have always had a good time there by myself or in a group.

A few tips for now:
1. While I agree with Nashville Hawk's advice on hotels, downtown and West End (Vanderbilt) hotels can get mega expensive. If that's an issue for your dates, airport and Opry-area hotels are more reasonably priced and only 15 min from downtown.
2. Bring cash to the Lower Broadway bars. No cover charges, the bands play for tips. (It's a great system -- they play really hard because that's how they earn money.)
3. Bars on the south side of Broadway (same side as the hockey arena) allow smoking. Bars on the north side of Broadway are non-smoking.
4. For a late night break from the Broadway crowds: go to the Bridge Bar at the Renaissance Hotel. 3rd floor glass bar/piano lounge overlooking a downtown street. Great views and more relaxed. (Bonus if you drive in: It connects to the parking garage at the library.)
5. Visit the Parthenon and city park when the building is open. Inside is a 40-ft gold statue of Athena -- IIRC it's the largest indoor statue in the country. (It's across the street from Vanderbilt. The park is very pleasant and worth strolling in nice weather.)
6. If you go to the Opry, allow some extra time to visit the adjacent Gaylord Hotel. It's like Vegas without the gambling -- 5 hotels under 1 roof, with an indoor boat tour of the building.
7. If you like stupid fun, there is a Dukes of Hazzard museum across the street from the Opry.

thanks Jefe

I love country music but am more partial to the older stuff ... especially Waylon Jennings, Hank Jr, Alabama

Everyone I know who has gone there has loved it... even those who don’t like country music like you said.

Have only watched PSU matches so I am not familiar with the top heavyweights other than Steveson. How does the board feel that Kerk matches up with the top guys?

I haven't been there since COVID hit, and not even sure if they've reopened yet, but it was still very enjoyable the last time I was there probably 14-16 months back. For many it's one of those must do and see while in Nashville.

Not necessarily a country music fanatic, but have thoroughly enjoyed many visits to Nashville over the years. We had a plant in Jackson, and would split business meetings in either Memphis or Nashville.

Since you mention the older music, may I suggest the Ken Burns' documentary Country Music. It's 16 hours long, in eight 2-hour segments. His stuff is really interesting. We're in the process of watching Jazz right now on the local PBS station.

Absolutely! How much on the line? $50? And do you want any points are are we doing straight up? The good thing is that I have to take my wife to her dad's in WV during B10s weekend, so I will be stuck in a hotel the entire weekend watching wrestling. Just doesn't get any better than that. :)
Make sure they have BTN.

You guys, I think we have a real "bang for your buck" issue going with this kid. If you include his 3 NLWC matches, we're only getting 82 seconds of wrestling out of this guy per bout. Whatever portion of the 9.9 he's getting, you have to think he's one of the most expensive wrestlers of all time....

That first shot he took is the epitome of what I expect from him. Lightning quick and smooth. Like I think only Gable can hip out of that.

HWT has 5 distinct tiers:
Steveson
Parris
Cassioppi
Rest of podium + R12
Everyone else

A fully healthy, experienced Kerk is right there with Steveson and Parris.

With his lack of mat time? He's still problems for Cass if he's aggressive on feet.

Parris and Steveson will be wars.

How does Kerkvliet compare size wise to Parris and Steveson? Those are some big dudes!

Kerk weighed in at 228 yesterday (same as Cassar at nationals).

Parris was at around 255 vs. Snacks a couple weeks ago.

I haven't seen Steveson's weight this year, but he was 258 for 2019 nationals, and he is probably both bigger and more solid now.

Still a bit floored that Kirk wrestled yesterday - he must have only gotten medical clearance very recently. Wow was that huge.

Sadly they won't have BTN, but I will be pulling the content online from from my DVR recordings after that fact. Also, I'll be able to watch all Saturday mat coverage on BTNplus. Not best case scenario, but not bad either. :)

You will actually need the Fox Sports App. Anything broadcast on BTN streams live on that app.

Edit: I stand corrected.

The Big Ten Network recently announced an increase of its linear coverage of the event, giving fans around the country the chance to see the nation's best wrestlers throughout the weekend. The network will air whip-around coverage of all four mats during session one on Saturday and air Saturday night's Big Ten semifinals. All four individual mats for both Saturday sessions will have mat cams available on the Big Ten Network+.

Sunday afternoon's Big Ten Championship finals will also air live on the Big Ten Network. Big Ten Network+ will feature the consolation action occurring before the finals, as well as placing bouts during the title tilts.

I’ve been thinking that gable is looking leaner this year. but also certainly more solid.

Where do we think Kerkvliet will/can be seeded for B1Gs?

If he's 4, 5, or 6, he'll have a relatively easy route to the semis. If he's 7 or lower, he'll see Mason or Gable in the quarters.

Based on reality, he's no lower than 4th, and really, 3rd.

But, if they go by actual records, and some petty coaches get their way, he could be way, way down.

My first thought is whether or not he has the stamina to get through a full seven minutes, given the number of matches in the tournaments.
I sure hope my concern is unfounded.

I'm not trying to be overly dismissive, but, he likely won't be doing a whole 7 minutes of wrestling against a first round or quarter final opponent if he's seeded 4, 5 or 6.

Given his record (2-0), with no prior NCAA results, I doubt he'll be a top 4 seed.

Great summary. I'd include the Country Music Hall of Fame. I'm not a big fan of country music, and still found it very interesting. Ryman Auditorium is worth a quick walk around if it's open.

I had to laugh at #3. I graduated from Vandy, have been back several times since, and never knew about the smoking/non-smoking distinction.

Great advice here. A couple of additions.

When you walk in the main entrance of the Gaylord opryland hotel, after you get through the reception area and a small shopping area you come to a courtyard with a small bar in the center. Ask the bartender where the high water mark was in the 2010 Nashville floods.

Tour the Ryman Auditorium. This is almost where the Grand Ole Opry started, until it moved, I think, in the seventies. If you like the old stuff, this is the old stuff. Like Williams, Cline, Acuff old.

Not only do the honky tonk performers play for only tips, some of them also are hopeful that they'll be playing in the right place, at the right time, to be seen by the right person.

If you've never seen a rockabilly band live, maybe Nashville has a recommendation. And, I mean a shirt off, drenched in sweat, standing on top of his base, pounding on it like a psu wrestler pounds on a Maryland guy rockabilly band. If you can find that your in for a treat.

But does he sweat like J'den Cox?

He definitely looks leaner. He had a bit of “baby fat” as a freshman but is all muscle now. He also seems to have matured on the mat as well, no more antics that he showed earlier on. If Kerk doesn’t win it, I am pulling for him.

“Only take so much honky tonk”

Mods... Wake up. I can’t hold this place together by myself.

Not to mention I see even more built-in excuses in this thread. Perhaps I start a new thread, where the rules are ACKNOWLEDGED and FOLLOWED by those with like minds.

Do you think Steveson is on a separate tier from Parris?
Yes, I do. I consider Steveson a prohibitive favorite right now. Parris is good enough that he could win in an upset, so Steveson's not a mortal lock like Spencer where a loss would be an all-time shocker, but a clear favorite and a level above everyone else, yes.
