Keystone Classic - Miscellaneous Other

Talk about serious - dude is having his second kid while still in school. My biggest decisions in college were Chickensteak, Cheesesteak, Pizza Steak or Pizza before my Sunday hungover football watching

I heard Nick Simmons on the Blood Round podcast last week. He's an assistant coach at Indiana now. He mentioned that Nate Jackson has a wife and three kids. Nate Jackson scoffs at Bo's little family.

Jimmy John's? Terrible - you are in the hot zone of some of the best sandwiches on earth and those poor guys are stuck with glorified Subway

absolutely agree

It's Philly - eating sandwiches from some chain like Jimmy John's or the ghastly Subway is like going to New York and eating Sbarros

in defense of PSU, Jimmy John's makes a big deal about their delivery. It would not surprise me if they delivered their sandwiches for PSU to The Palestra, which made things easier for whomever was coordinating the food for the team. Wawa doesn't deliver. Some of the great hoagie places in the University City area deliver, but I doubt that PSU would have known their names, or whether or not they delivered.

plus, from my memory of wrestling tournaments, I was so happy to be able to eat that I'd consume just about anything put in front of me.

One wrestler still in the competition was sitting in the bleachers leaning back into his girlfriend's lap, she running her fingers through his hair and otherwise doting on him. Maybe I'm just an old fart, but doesn't strike me as the best way to prepare for a match. Hell, look at the effect of Iowa's painting a locker room pink. He lost the next match, by the way.

Hey, good for the wrestler.

There are no rights or wrongs in terms of preparation. Each wrestler has a different approach.

Suriano is on one extreme. He gets himself in a zone, and pretty much isolates everyone else that is around him. He was 159-0 in high school, so that approach has worked for him. I mentioned in another thread that I spoke briefly with him between the semis and the finals. While he was seated in the same section as other PSU wrestlers, he was off by himself, and totally focused on his upcoming match. After our very brief conversation, I basically apologized for interrupting his mental preparation.

On the other end of the spectrum is Nolf. He was cracking up some of his teammates at the side of the mat before the start of one of the rounds. And that wasn't the only time I saw him joking around while off the mats. I also spoke briefly with Jason in the stands. He was relaxed, and joking with the teammates sitting around him, but when he spoke with me he was very respectful.

Would Suriano's approach work for Nolf? Perhaps, but it doesn't seem as though it would fit his personality. Would Nolf's approach work for Suriano? I seriously doubt it. And yet these approaches, which are quite different, appear to be working very well for each of these guys this season.

As for the wrestler being doted on by his GF -- good for him. He probably felt that was the best thing for him at the time. I doubt that it had much of an impact on the results of his subsequent match, even if he did lose that one.

just my gf in a bathing suit. looks good at 46. i should really change my avatar

I always assumed it was just a pic that you liked. Appears to be a situation where a little less honesty would have served you best. ;) Congrats -- certainly is a good looking gal for 46. Most of us will probably be disappointed if you change your avatar.

I was sitting in the Palestra stands on Sunday with an Italian imperial from Lee's. I would have picked some up for the boys if I had known they were hankering for a hoagie.
Mmnnnn! I used to frequent the one that was on the Penn campus near the infamous "Murder McDonald's" which was at the corner of 40th & Walnut. Not there anymore. Lee's Hoagie House is legit!

I can't believe you give him a pass on that.

You spend two paragraphs arguing a point that I made in my OP--that the differences between Suriano's vs. Nolf's preparation means nothing.

Both are stark contrasts to snuggling with your girlfriend 30 minutes before a match. Is it inexcusable, abominable behavior? No, but it is at least bad form.

A couple additional observations...

The nucleus of the team--Nolf, Zain, Nickal, etc.--sat very close together. Suriano and Nevills were two I noticed hung out more on the fringes. What's it mean? Absolutely nothing, as far as I'm concerned. Just an observation.

I had the good fortune to talk to one of our AA's dad. He said his son has absolutely no trouble making his current weight. It might surprise you who. It wasn't the McCutcheons.

One more observation that was definitely disturbing. Not bad behavior, but an indication of a less than ideal mental state. Won't go into details out of respect for the competitor and the program.

Aren't you a little embarrassed by this post?

I think my point was missed by you. IMHO, each wrestler finds a process that works for them in terms of preparation. Some have a laser-beam mental focus for hours before a match. Others pretty much do nothing to prepare for the match, until they are minutes away from the start of the match.

To give you another example, Bo Nickal was totally dominant at the Classic. Yet in the morning, when Suriano was jogging around, shadow wrestling, and deep in his thoughts with his head gear covering his ears, Bo was sitting on his butt by the side of the mats, not doing a thing, and looking more like a spectator than a wrestler. Yet they both brought their A games to their 1st match.

Neither you nor I know what approach works best for the wrestler who was being snuggled. Since I admit that I don't know, I'm happy to allow him to do what he thinks is best. I'm also happy to allow him to modify his approach if he decides that he needs to change it.

Generally, I agree. Do what works for you. But there are boundaries. Where I draw them has snuggling with the girlfriend while still in the competition on the outside. For you it might be smoking a cigarette, but I think you would agree there are boundaries.

As well, it's a stretch to call lovey dovey with the girlfriend "a process."

We can agree to disagree. Happy Thanksgiving, Tom. Look forward to the rest of the wrestling season in no small part due to this site.

Matt won't be an AA until this year :), just me being optimistic.

I have to admit, I don't know if you're joking here, but if not, that's incredibly judgmental, particularly without knowing more about the wrestler in question.

You need to do some soul searching with yourself after that confession. Perhaps get a bit existential and determine what you want out of this life. Do you want to muddle along in a fog thinking Jimmy John's is adequate or do you want to live a life of meaning and seek out food fit for a higher purpose? The choice is yours, Mr. Pie of the Lemon variety.

I wish you luck.

Hilarious, CMT. Hey, here is a Sweet 16 bracket of Philly's Ultimate Cheesesteak.

Note: The new owner of Chink's changed the name to Joe's Steaks + Soda. Locals did not care for that and business fell off precipitously.

I'm not sure how much I need to know about the guy to judge the way he was "preparing" to compete. Never said it makes him a bad person.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with what they were doing but the timing of it--minutes before competing in a collegiate wrestling match--really?

Maybe you'd feel differently if you'd seen it. Or maybe not. Funny thing is I'm usually one who supports individuality and independent thinking. Here I thought I was taking a more populist view on the situation. Oh well.

Most might not be disappointed if he substituted his current avatar with the top view of his girlfriend facing us instead of the bottom side view. Just saying....:p
