Rumor has it that Koa lead all tacklers totaling 8 tackles yesterday.

How does that make you in game stream loonies feel this morning? Better than another belt of Jack Daniels straight up or carafe of Black Coffee, I bet.

I can remember one play where he was run over about 5 yards downfield and the RB ran right into him, maybe intentionally trying to truck him. Was probably a 7 or 8 yard gain.

Next.

Hmmm. It's not like he's running downhill and meeting the ball carrier in the backfield. No. 7 is more of a liability out there.

Saw him as a spy on Recignio in the 3rd quarter and yet, somehow got out of position to get juked and led to a 3rd down conversion. He’s freakin terrible as a linebacker and should have been riding pine 8 games ago.

Perhaps, his play has suffered while the rookies around him have been learning where they are supposed to be. Just a thought. Over and over I have heard he is out of position and lost in space. Seems that yesterday with the youngsters around him finally having gained considerable experience, he was more often in the right place and making tackles, enough so that he led the team in tackles. Perhaps it was a one game anomaly. We shall see. But just how many experienced LBs has he played with this season? Jan Johnson, Parsons, Ellis, Brown, Miller? Three of these guys have a fraction of 3/4 of a season div 1 playing time. Just something I will be watching the next 2 games.

I know he led the team in "missed tackles".

That was such a sad play, and unfolded just as you described. This is one of those “the player didn’t execute” situations to some — but to the more observant of us (those who actually understand football), it was a coaching failure to have Farmer on the field at all, let alone to try and use him as a spy on the QB in that situation. Might as well have a freshman, 3rd team, 300 pound offensive lineman in there trying to spy the opposing team’s QB, and then scream “execution” when that awful decision doesn’t work out as “planned.”

Yep, on that play I was thinking a 5h yr senior LB needs to make that tackle in open space. But I also did notice him making a bunch of legit tackles. He played well overall.

Nice to see Parsons with the strip sack. They need to blitz him more.

I didn't see the game. FWIW, Jack Ham thought it was the best game he played all year. They did seem to run at him a lot. I don't think that's a compliment, but he did put up
What ever one might think of an individual player, this young man committed here and persevered. As I seem to recall, we were very thin on experience at LB and he gave it his best shot. It appears he has been supplanted by Micah Parsons, as I'm sure most felt would be the reality with game experience. I don't get why so called fans denigrate one of our players constantly. If he is terrible, does he do it just to offend us personally? Does he intentionally under perform? Yet, some of the same loyal fans will rue the loss of a linebacker who let the program down at some of the most critical times imaginable.......and given a 3rd or 4th chance was unwilling to work his way back into trust, turned his back on the program again......and will go elsewhere. Curious!

A kid on my high school team had 6 picks and made all conference. Problem was he got beat deep multiple times for tds and other teams threw at him a lot. Kid on the other side only had two picks but only gave up 1 td and 6 pass completions the entire year including the playoffs. Other teams rarely threw his way because of his coverage skills and when they did it was rarely successful. He didn’t make all conference. Point is sometimes stats can be deceiving.

Point is, Koa's not a football player. He doesn't like contact and he has no real instincts. He's a physical specimen and may be All World in his efforts to improve, but he doesn't have it. I applaud his efforts, but he is on the field way too much.

It is pretty impressive what this defense has ended up like considering the linebacking corps is made up of a walk-on, a guy with the build of a receiver, a guy who looks like a safety, and a true freshman who never played linebacker before. Farmer drives me crazy to watch, but I resist blasting him because he is out there doing his best. It’s not his fault that he is one of the top options we have at linebacker.

We just didn’t recruit enough LB’s from 2014 to 2017, and many of the ones we did are no longer playing for us.

You have not been paying attention.

All that matters here are receiving stats.

Yep, that play should have resulted in a 3 and out.
But it didn't and Rutgers kept the ball for 15 plays and half a quarter.

Strange sentiment around here. A thread where the point is "look here, the light came on in his 3rd from final college game; quit criticising him!" is just as ridiculous as the continual "bench him, he sucks" threads at this point. I'm fairly certain nobody pinpointed Koa yesterday UNTIL this thread was trotted out. To come out here with "he lead the team with 8 tackles" and blatantly ignore other key facts involved with the performance is just plain goofy. Then again, maybe you got your desired reaction...

It most certainly is not his fault he is out there.
But, that said, he most certainly is not one of the top options they have at LB.

That doesn’t mean the staff may not have other legitimate (or at least defensible) reasons to play him over some others. But there is no way on God’s green Earth he is one of the top options vav play between the lines.

Who are the others? There just isn’t a lot to choose from there.
When I say one of the top to choose from, I don’t mean top two or three. I mean top 6 because I am not sure there are more then 6 non-redshirting linebackers on the roster. He is absolutely tough to watch. Likewise, it is tough to watch all them struggle to take on and release from blocks.

Didn't they BOTH start? I thought I saw somewhere that Parsons started for Brown.
Farmer played Browns position at OLB. The same position he played the 2 previous seasons. He did not play in the box yesterday. Consequently he played better. He should never play in the box because he is ineffective and Parsons has proven he is capable.

Turned an easy 3-and-out into (IIRC) RU’s longest drive (and really only drive until the 4Q)

One of the most forgettable plays of Farmer’s forgettable season.
When a lead-footed gangly QB leaves you grasping at air (and, really, not even “grasping at air”..... as Farmer not only never laid a hand on him - he never even was closed enough to ponder the thought of maybe being able to impede Rescigno’s Open Range scramble).
That was just...... amazing. :)

It just is what it is, and has been all year.

And if he plays like that next week and there is no reason to think he won’t MD and Canada will eat him alive.

Is this some kind of joke? This is big time athletics and he’s not walking on. An AVERAGE power 5 school spends 100k per year per athlete. PSU is probably not middle of the pack. So, considering PSU has probably dumped half-a-million into him while many of the fans are either in debt or have kids with debt from PSU, I think people are entitled to gripe a bit when they see poor effort on the field. How do you even know he’s trying his hardest? If his worst lot in life is putting up with a bunch of goofs on a forum complaining, I think he’ll be just fine.

Parsons showed flashes yesterday with the strip sack and a really nice TFL where he smothered the RB. He whiffed on the goal line once, but he has huge upside. Didn’t Arrington blow up his Sophomore year?

Unless Cam Brown suffers another OFI Injury  ...... I expect #7 will get a very brief “start”, and then Parsons will move in.

That’s certainly the way things were trending before Brown had to sit the 1st Half.

But you’re right - IMO - Canada’s run game will eat up any defense that has a hole in the LB group.

McFarland scares me. Very fast and we don’t have elite speed in our back 7.

Anyone remember when Justin King ran down Rashard Mendenhall when mendenhall had like a 5 yard head start?

He has one game left which is senior day. These 5th year guys are Franklins first PSU recruits so get prepared to see them start. Maybe the Farmer haters could try to tolerate one more game that we will likely win without losing their minds

I don't understand some of the love being shown here for Matt Canada. You realize he lasted one year at LSU and was fired as they had one of the worst offenses in modern school history? This year they scored 3 against MSU and were shut out by Iowa. IIRC they scored 14 against Temple.
Maryland always has a core of great athletes and this year is no exception. IMHO Maryland's offense is going to look a lot more like they did against Iowa and MSU on Saturday and a lot less like they did against OSU. They made some huge plays yesterday to put up those points. That does not happen a lot to PSU defenses and it has not happened very much through 11 games, not sure why Saturday would be different. Also, if it inspires confidence, MD has lost 3 straight and 6 of 9 and the wins were over Rutgers, Illinois and Minny.

Too bad you could not post this after the Michigan or Ohio State game. Main difference between Saban and Franklin. Saban. Makes decisions to secure the win. Franklin. Makes decisions to secure the relationships with the kids. Not saying one is better than the other.
