Good for him. Good program with a lot of history.
Yeah, he was building something in an unlikely spot. But this seems like a good career move for Cary.Man he was just bringing Campbell around.
Cary was at Campbell University for six years. He accomplished much, but the wrestling community surely knew at some point he'd be moving on. Too talented as a coach, so now we get to see what he can do for Navy.
Did you know that Penn State and Navy have wrestled 86 times, second only to Penn State vs Lehigh (118). When I was a student, Navy was one of the matches most anticipated by our fans.
PSWC website shows an M. Kane.Back in the 60s and 70s Navy was usually the top wrestling team in the east in front of Lehigh and Penn State. They had a heavyweight during the same years as Joyner who gave Joyner fits. Don;t think he ever beat Joyner but he only weighed about 200 pounds.

As the old-timers will remember, Hwt Dave Joyner couldn't come out for wrestling until after the football season (including bowl game). So, he had to work his way into wrestling shape (note below). His first match back in Feb 1970 he tied Navy's EIWA champ (Kane) 1-1 to preserve a 18-16 win. The next year he pinned another Navy Hwt to earn a 17-17 tie with Navy for the dual.
Note: Joyner (a 1st team football AA and NCAA runner-up Hwt wrestler) was once asked how the conditioning compared to wrestle vs football and he said there was no comparison (wrestling of course was tougher).
I'd feel a lot worse for Campbell if they hadn't made that investment. That foundation gives them an opportunity to thrive under the new head coach.Congratulations to Cary. The move to Navy allows him to advance his career and achieve personal and financial goals. Nevertheless, this must be devastating to Campbell as they invested heavily in Cary and his staff, facilities, recruiting and scholarships. This year Campbell had several ranked wrestlers and a few quality recruits coming in. Hopefully, they can hire a replacement who can keep the program on the upturn.
His wife is from the Annapolis area.Cary has history in Maryland, too.
Willie reporting that Campbell will hire Scotti Sentes as Kolat's successor.
