I hesitate hanging an entire position on a couple wrestlers. One could prove dang near anything with all the over-achievers, under-achievers, etc. There's a whole bunch of good-to-great coaches out there … I happen to feel really grateful and thankful for the four we have, and consider them the best. But that's just one man's opinion.

Cenzo and Marinelli would be a good place for the Iowa folks to start analyzing coaching results. Similarly ranked coming out of HS, one has been in the finals three times, won two championships by hanging two losses on Imar (out of his three career losses). The other has finished 6th his freshman year and 7th his sophomore year.

They also might want to look at a guy named Wick ranked at 25 in the same class as Marineli by Flo. https://www.flowrestling.org/rankings/6031432-class-of-2016-big-board/15022-mark-hall-reigns-supreme

Should probably wait until the Bull and Joseph have finished their wrestling careers before putting this out there.

Why? Joseph has already been to the finals more than Marinelli will ever be able to and has won as many championships as it is possible for Marinelli to win. And he beat Imar twice in the finals, preventing Imar from being a four time champ, which is another thing Marinelli will never do.

It's probably worth mentioning, though, that Cenzo is 0-2 against Marinelli.

Seems relevant when comparing the two.

Player A hit .393 with 4 HR in his career against Player B.

Ty Wigginton was an All-Star.

Randy Johnson is in the Hall of Fame.
Yet I'm ok with fans supporting their guy. Doing so with a stretch of the facts makes the argument unreasonable. The Cenzo/Marinelli argument is at least reasonable, AND there's two years yet for the Iowa guy to make his mark. Bottom line for me, not worth discussing yet.

OK. And what is this supposed to indicate about each player's coach?

Don't get me wrong, I'll take Cael over the Brands every time. I just don't understand how comparing Cenzo and Marinelli shows that.

I think 8 titles in 9 years is a much better indicator.

Like Roar touched on, Marinelli has 2 more years to prove himself. I am by no means predicting this, but it is entirely possible that the Bull could go undefeated his jr and sr years, beating Joseph up to 3 more times along the way. This would make him a 2x NCAA champ, have 2 undefeated seasons, 4 undefeated regular seasons, 3x BIG10 champ, and 5-0 lifetime against Joseph. Flip side, he takes a few losses and finishes out of the top 3 his last two seasons.

Either situation could happen, along with a multitude of outcomes in-between, which could change the perception of the wrestlers(and coaches) in regards to these two individuals careers at their respective schools.

Absolutely nothing about the coaches.

It's about the perception about how much to value H2H when comparing careers.

Marinelli has time to change this, but as of today he's the guy who can beat a champ but can't be a champ.

Oh...OK.

The person I replied to was suggesting the comparison of Cenzo and Marinelli as a good place to start analyzing coaching results. I interpreted that (possibily incorrectly) to mean that Cenzo's better NCAA finishes indicate Cael to be the superior coach. I was just adding that the H2H is also probably relevant to the discussion.

Like I said, I don't think "who's the better coach" is really up for discussion. Cael has put that to bed. I just don't think Bull vs VJ is a good indicator of that. I'd say the Grand Canyon-sized disparity in team and individual titles is much better.

Ah, the realm of "entirely possible". It's entirely possible I win the lottery tonight.

You're missing/ignoring the point that I am trying to make by cherry picking this from my reply. I'm assuming on purpose, because we are talking about Iowa and it's more fun for you to find things to make them look bad.

I'm simply saying that we only have part of the data. Two years from now, we will have the rest of the info. Then, people can make whatever inferences they want about these two.

I'm not missing the point. A lot of things are entirely possible, but the level of likelihood varies greatly. We know this: Marinelli will never make as many finals as Cenzo and he will not win more titles.

I love rum runners... Wouldnt cruise without them :)

More of this please.

My experience with Rum Runners led to my buddy (and roommate for the trip) overflowing a toilet in the Dominican.

Didn't die in the Dominican, though. So alls well that ends well.

Jrod, If Bull does in fact run the table his junior year and gets his first championship, any chance folks on HR stop whining about his difficult draw during the finals during his senior season? At some point every one else's draw is difficult, right?

Every fan base has excuse makers, trash talkers, etc. I'm sure there will still be Iowa fans complaining about it for a while yet and PSU fans making fun of them for just as long or longer....

I would also like to point out that I am a folk from HR, and I didn't whine about his draw(at least not publicly) and I am sure that there were many, many more Hawk fans on HR who also never whined about it.

To answer your last question, yes. It's the NCAA's.

The draw is significant, but more important is seasonal preparation. Everybody knows Marinelli ended up completely worn out by JoJo because Marinelli wrestles so hard throughout the season he pounds himself into submission over the course of the season.

What I was referring to is the fact it will not be an Olympic year you Jackoff. Now get off your moms couch and go get a job.

LOL. There’s the Grip I know!

Who are you kidding bud, you know it’s an HR thing to always be looking forward to next year.

This is the timeline for Iowa fans past 10 yrs..

In March it’s meltdown mode as they’ve just disappointed again. By June they’re the #1 team for upcoming year. By August they scoring 170. By November once PSU has first dual, its “wait till next year!”

Coco puffs! yeah this shit is gonna be good. Next year could be even better.

Reminds me of the line in Animal House when Flounder says 'oh boy this is going to be great....' as they're taking the horse into the Dean 's office. Awesome movie.

Grip, you need the Flounder picture/handle on BWI :)

Don’t forget the time when Flounder says “Ariel's been turned into a human. She'll have to make the prince fall in love with her, and he's gotta he's gotta kiss her." Good times! :)

I wouldn't predict it either. :):) I suggest all of us chill, sit back and enjoy the wrestling. These peeing contests are less than worthless once past the banter stage.

Damn....took too many days to get off my hammock in Aruba to see this and properly rebut. So I guess it will stand in the anals of great comebacks here in bwi.

Double damn......my butler did not properly ice this drink.

Grip carry on. You evidently are doing so-so well

I would do that and I would also talk to them about the days when I used to Wrestle Kerry.

You named your pig Kerry?
That was pretty funny, but no I grew up in the same area as McCoy and we did not have pigs. If I had one of course his name would be BACON. Kerry was more like a bear dummy and you may not know this he Wrestled at PSU he was pretty good look it up.

Looked it up! Yeah, turns out he was pretty good at wrestling. I'm starting to understand why the college thing didn't work out for ya.
