Drexel hosted #5 Lehigh recently and Lehigh won on Criteria. You have a talented #5 rated team coming in and have Austin DeSanto ......one of the most exciting wrestlers around. Check out the results. Notice the attendance. 487......which is Drexel's highest of the year. PSU is so fortunate

No. 5 Lehigh 20, Drexel 20 – Lehigh wins by criteria
174: No. 5 Jordan Kutler (Lehigh) DEC Austin Rose (DU), 5-1
184: Owen Brooks (DU) WBF Paul Dunn (Lehigh) @ 6:12
197: Chris Weiler (Lehigh) MAJ No. 20 Stephen Loiseau (DU), 8-0
285: No. 12 Jordan Wood (Lehigh) DEC Vincenzo Pelusi (DU), 5-1
125: No. 4 Darian Cruz (Lehigh) DEC Zack Fuentes (DU), 3-2
133: No. 6 Austin DeSanto (DU) TF Nick Farro (Lehigh), 22-6 @ 3:00
141: No. 16 Luke Karam MAJ Chandler Olson (DU), 9-1
149: Trevor Elfvin (DU) DEC Cortlandt Schuyler (Lehigh), 14-7
157: Ian Brown (Lehigh) DEC Evan Barczak (DU), 3-2
165: Ebed Jarrell (DU) WBF Cole Walter (Lehigh) @ 6:33

Attendance: 487

There was a thread about the dual:

https://bwi.forums.rivals.com/threads/lehigh-21-drexel-20.195088/#post-3181808

though I don't believe the attendance for the dual was discussed in that thread.

That is the reason for the post.....I saw the attendance and couldn't believe it. I checked their other matches and they were around 400.....which is higher than last year. It really puts the top team's support...like PSU... in a much better perspective. 487 for a top 5 team dual AND DeSanto boggles my mind.

Would have expected some Lehigh fans would have made the trip....only about 60 to 70 miles or so. Desanto probably had bigger crowds at Exeter HS matches

Lehigh fans are not interested enough to make that trip. They are a weird bunch. Lehigh has fans from all over the country who will travel home to see an important home match, but the supposed large grouping of local fans don't travel well. Heck, if Lehigh had scheduled that arena match against Princeton the number of fans would have been 750 and half would have been traveling Princeton fans.

Lehigh's average home attendance is less than one would expect from a perennial top-10 program in PA. Following is last year's numbers...

1 Iowa 9860
2 Penn State 7833
3 Ohio State 5880
4 Oklahoma State 5041
5 Rutgers 4706
6 Iowa State 3280
7 Minnesota 2715
8 Nebraska 1948
9 South Dakota State 1614
10 Northern Iowa 1603
11 Virginia Tech 1507
12 Lehigh 1485
13 Cornell 1472
14 Missouri 1377
15 Edinboro 1309
16 Michigan 1217
17 Arizona State 1045
18 NC State 1027
19 Army 1012
20 Wisconsin 955

Are PA fans really awesome? Yes, in fact 2nd best.

Pretty good numbers but when combining all the D1 schools attendance it shows the state of Iowa is the most passionate wrestling state for college wrestling. All this despite being such a smaller state population wise.

IA totals: 14,743
PA totals: 10,627

IA state population:3,145.711
PA state population:12,805,537

So basically one out of every 213 Iowans will attend a college wrestling meet whereas one out of every 1,205 Pennsylvanians will attend a meet.

Now we could add in other non top 20 D1 school for PA, but I would counter moot that with Wartburg and Grandview attendances so I will just limit this to top 3 D1 schools for each state.

Iowa is the most passionate wrestling state!

What else is there to do in Iowa regarding sports. PA has (7) Pro sports teams people follow and support. Iowa has zero.

No argument that IA is a passionate state. But once again the argument is skewed by Phi and Pitt areas which have nothing to do with wrestling. Which you knew because this debate is had around here once a year, but normally in the summer and not december.

But if you guys have a need to be #1 in something these days, Im happy to give a participation trophy to your attendance numbers.

If Iowa gets extra credit by normalizing attendance vs. population, does Iowa get even more extra credit by normalizing vs. NCAA placement?

That's a lot of passionate fans. But, shouldn't all those passionate Iowa wrestling fans also be pouring $'s into the Iowa wrestling programs? With that built in advantage of passionate fans the Iowa schools should certainly be flush with cash and the envy of every other state, right? ;)

No, but what the numbers do support is the Iowa Program is capable of getting back on top because with that type of fan support you can sell being a rockstar to the top P4P kids. What could keep a top kid from wanting to wrestle in front of the largest and most passionate fans base in the sport?

Which leads me to what I have been saying. The Iowa wrestling program is bigger than the Brands Brothers and they can be replaced and Iowa fans don't have to be scared to do so if it comes to that. They just have keep showing up. It will be interesting to see if and by how much attendance drop this year? Spencer could ignite the resurgence if he is what we think. He will be a rockstar on a snowy Jan night in front of 15k.

I think Iowa is. Look at all the recent fundraising for the HWC and the new practice facility they want to build. PSU would be in the same boat if it wasn't for one $6m check. Nobody in the sport can can match that unless I win the powerball.

I believe both fan bases are very supportive, in fact the most supportive in the country.

You had to go and say "Yes, in fact 2nd best" re. PA fans, then "Iowa is the most passionate wrestling state", and ruined your entire post. Not to mention the creative statistics to support the claim.

There's room for both, but here's some more info for you, from the PSU SID...after last year's Lehigh Dual...
"The crowd of 15,424 is the eighth largest wrestling dual meet in NCAA history and the sixth largest indoors. Penn State owns four of the top six NCAA indoor wrestling attendance figures, including the top three. Penn State has wrestled in front of 33 sellouts in its last 35 home duals including four in the near-16,000 seat Jordan Center"

Iowa, at CHA, had 16 of their top-25 attendances prior to 2000, meaning only 9 of their all-time are in the past 18 years. PSU, on the other hand, are slowly displacing the highest attendance records of all time.

It's great that you are supportive of your state and your fellow fans. I'll take PA and PSU fans, speaking both as a long-time fan, and an active member of our fan club.

And as far as this..."What could keep a top kid from wanting to wrestle in front of the largest and most passionate fans base in the sport?", my answer is "nothing at all", just ask anyone in the PSU line-up ;).

Apparently enough to fill a 3" binder.

I would think a wrestler would want to wrestle for an NCAA Individual/Team Championship instead of worryng about the number of fans in the stands? An individual championship can be won on sheer talent alone; the team trophy goes to the best overall team naturally. Spencer Lee can well win an individual title on his talent but wont win a team trophy as long as Cael/Penn State wrestling continues to bring in the talented wrestlers that have been wanting to wrestle for him and Penn State.

Pittsburgh has nothing to do with wrestling? A recent national champion might take issue with that.

Congratulations! That is awesome!

So, you have the self-proclaimed best lightweight room in the country, the self-proclaimed best message board and you're the self-proclaimed most passionate wrestling state.

Congratulations, Stuart Smalley. This might be prophetic.

Please enlighten us because Im not sure your point fits but maybe Im wrong.

I get the feeling that your point is similar to that notion that you get quality QBs in the 6th round because of Tom Brady.

I assume he's referring to Cenzo? Depending on how you scope the boundaries, Nico, Nolf, Cutch might also qualify.
Yeah, if PIAA District 8 (Pittsburgh city) is not a wrestling hotbed, then certainly PIAA District 7 (WPIAL or Western Pa) is a wrestling hotbed.

If Nico, Nolf, and Cutch live in Pittsburgh, then I owe the City of Philadelphia 20+ years of income taxes for living and working in the suburbs.

I'm actually in Murraysville right now as I type this. A whole lotta Stillers regalia everywhere I turn, and steel plant soot on the buildings. Like I said: depends on how you draw the boundaries.

The areas surrounding Pittsburgh have some of the absolute best HS wrestling. Cenzo's Central Catholic is in Pittsburgh but is a WPIAL school.

Well, dunk's post did say the Pittsburgh and Philly "areas" not the city and the Pittsburgh area produces a ton of D1 AAs. I understood exactly what he meant but he didn't state in correctly.

No it doesn't. The boundaries are official. Murrysville is not Pittsburgh.

The point relative to the topic is that there is a lot of support for wrestling in suburban and exurban Pittsburgh, but not in the city itself. And being in District 7 geographically doesn't translate to supporting Pitt. Jason Nolf's hometown is equidistant from Clarion and Pitt. Sammie Henson's kids are enrolled at Waynesburg Central. Etc.

OK. I'll hand in my "State College resident" card, then--the borough ends across the street from me. Not sure why my property taxes go to SCASD then, though....

I get the point--wrestling isn't popular (by and large) with African Americans (with notable exceptions).

Actually, I thought the point was D1 attendance--and there is a "notable" "D1" university in southwestern PA that didn't make the above list.

To be accurate, comparing State College and Pittsburgh is a little silly.

Murrysville is about the same distance from Pittsburgh as Philipsburg is to State College. People don't talk about that Condo guy from State College playing football for the Raiders. Just like nobody ever says the Nico guy from Pittsburgh.

I think it is based on where one is. I just saw Nico yesterday (north of Pittsburgh ). I assume if he were in State College, he would say he is from Murrysville. However he said his next competition is in the Ukraine; if asked there, I assume he would say he is from Pittsburgh.

By the way, for getting the hell beat out of him in the room, he does not have a mark on him and still has that great attitude.

While I was in Murraysville, I polled several people: turns out most Murraysvillians prefer feta. So there, Willy.
