Penn State: 59
GA State: 7

Tommy, Miles, and company get lots of second half playing time

Repeating from my previous posts this week about the score. But not just the same old boring final with no substance. I want to see the how and why that final comes about! Come on, peeps! No one is gonna think badly of ya if you're wrong. So have some fun! Be creative! Pull up that vast knowledge of PSU football history you tote around with you in your blue&white brains.
I have virtually no chance to see the below come true, but here it is! (Ahem, though.... I said 35-0 halftime vs. Akron and 52-7 final. So I got that going for me).

And... today (15th) is my birthday, so indulge me here. Come on, BWI Bros.

Here. We. Go.:
38 - 6 halftime (PSU leads, btw).
GaSt's 6 is via 2 FGs.
Our 38 is via a kick return for a TD (not sure yet if a punt or kickoff), a Defensive scoop and score fumble recovery, 1 Saquon run, 1 Trace-to-Hamilton pass, 1 Tommy-to-Trace pass.

66 -12 Final.
The garbage time TD given up is greeted with a blocked XPt.
Our 28 are from another Saquon TD run, and 3 TDs by the reserves, including a Tommy run, a Tommy pass to Holland, and a Miles run.

Now THAT'S how to make a worthwhile prediction*.

Board goes crazy that we gave up three scores to GaSt. We discuss at length how we just hope to be competitive and not embarrass ourselves at Iowa the next week. We find comfort and support from our fellow angst-riddled worriers, and anxiously await the soothing words of Phil and crew about how we will somehow manage to find a way to win in that hostile environment. The Imodium will be within reach all week.

*Post-game, no one even notices or comments about the uncanny accuracy of these predictions. :(
This will be even more sad for a reason to be unveiled later this week.
- Because today (Friday) is my birthday, dammit!
Some other Bob takes credit for it in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
There is a split in the Union o' Bobs that will take years to repair. :(
But one Bob will always know the truth. ;) (No, not youse / yinz other Bobs, either!)

I'll keep going on the predictions. I mind myself standing in line at the Waffle Shop at 9am on Sunday morning. Get home, then take a nap. Wake up for 1pm football and grumble at players kneeling during national anthem.

Could not have said - whatever this was in response to my post - better myself. o_O

Penn State 6, GASt. 4

I will be right one of these weeks.

Does Ga. State even have a hockey / baseball team?

Or are you thinking ahead to the Iowa game, recalling one of many tight ones with them mighty Hawkeyes?

McSorley wins the game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth quarter.

The opponent is a bit tougher this week, so I say 30-17.

Maybe not many people here will remember this blast from the past, but I bet you will, Fair:

All the talk about this being a tight game reminds me of the 1977 Utah State at Penn State game. I think it was Homecoming, late September - early October-ish.
PSU in '77 was an excellent team. An argument could be made that they were a little better than the '78 team, one of our all-time best. We fans knew nothing of Utah State, and wondered how they wrangled their way onto the schedule. USU had 2 players who were rather unknown (1 a tailback, maybe?), but who later played in the NFL. I cannot recall their names.... will have to look it up later. And I don't mean Merlin Olsen, either.

EDIT: QB Eric Hipple. RB Rick Parros.

Anyway, our Defense was great that day, but the O could not get untracked. We won, 16-7, but left most fans with a "Huh? What?" feeling afterwards. But as we know, 1977 was a great season for us, and one upset loss at home to a good Kentucky (Art Still at DE, Derrick Ramsey at QB) team was all that stood in the way of us playing for an NC that season.

The USU Aggies played their hearts out that day 40 years ago, but came up short. The game went largely unnoticed nationally, and we maintained a top 10 or 12 ranking at midseason. (Finished #4 or 5, I think).

I'll have to try to find the stats from that USU game. I wonder if Fusina threw even 20 passes that day? My guess is USU saw a lot of Suhey and Torrey and Guman and Moore running between the tackles. I sort of recall Randy Sidler having a tremendous game, being almost unblockable that day from his NG position (now: 1 technique! but why?!), and at all of about 230 lbs.

Chime in, any fellow fartes d'olde who remember that game. I was there, still a student, about a year away from graduating in the fall of '78! And yes, I stayed the extra semester just for football season, I am proud to say (sorry about the extra tuition bill, Mom and Dad).

I have that game on DVD somewhere. Eric Hipple indeed was the QB. They instead PSU tough. PSU had a game with Houston either before or after that game and I think Houston was pretty talented.

As a matter of fact Houston win the SWC and played Notre Dane in the Cittin Bowl in a lousy weather day in Dallas on Jan 1. Joe Montana had some chicken soup at halftime and led ND in a come back and they won the NC

We played Houston in the 2nd game that '77 season. They had won the SWC and beat undefeated Maryland in the Cotton bowl the season before ('76). They were expected to have a very good '77 season, too. ABC had them play UCLA on national TV on Labor Day night.... previously unheard of. UCLA had won the Rose Bowl the season before, beating Ohio State behind Mark Harmon. Houston beat UCLA, and iirc, broke their punter's jaw on a gruesome blocked punt. Yeesh.

Houston had to travel to PSU the next weekend. Houston ran the veer option behind Danny Davis, who was a phenomenal athlete. He ripped apart Maryland and Randy White in the Cotton Bowl. They ran to the line quickly, snapped on the first sound, and pretty much wore down the opposing Defenses. But they had a short week to prepare for an excellent PSU team.

PSU's practice that week was tough. Joe had two scout team offenses ready to go at all times. They scrimmaged on Tuesday vs. the scout team, and I think ran a thud scrimmage on Wednesday. At practice, as soon as a play was whistled down in the scrimmage, they had the ref mark the ball ready, and the other scout team O lined up and snapped the ball. The D had to recover from the previous play, get lined up, and play the play..... all scrimmage long. The guys said the game was in slow motion for them after that tough week of practice.

Anyway, we handled Davis and their O pretty well, and their D had no answer for our running game, which set up some nice passing success for us. Someone got a hard tackle on Davis at one point, and he left the game with a separated shoulder. We won fairly easily, like 31-14 or so, and then the nation started to take notice of how good we were. Then we lost to Kentucky a couple weeks later.

People started to notice that teams who had high expectations often had some struggles after playing (and usually losing to) Penn State. It was about that time that the term 'the Penn State flu' became somewhat popular, meaning that teams who left PSU were often banged up and not playing as well for a few weeks afterward. I forget if that phrase came from a writer, or from the team. Houston had an ok season, but not what was expected. It was the '78 season when they went to the Cotton Bowl again and lost to ND and Montana's chicken soup comeback.

I am pretty sure the '77 game is on You Tube. Worth a watch if you have the time.
