Looking ahead to SMU, is our defense any reason to worry?

My point is when the bad calls are primarily against one team. That happens.
And that's life...things sometimes go against you...find a way. It's not bias and it's not intentional. It's just part of the game.

And, more often than not, most fans will always say the other team had more calls go their way. It's all bias.

I am not saying it is intentional. Again, the point is you could have 10 calls go against you were bad calls and the other team has none or heck even 3 or 4 at crucial times That is the definition of influencing a game. What if a penalty is called against one team mistakenly on every play? Just overcome that?

You at least admitted that officiating can benefit one team more than the other.

I admittedly do not know much about SMU - other than speed, throwing, scoring. #8 nationally in ppg (37), #23 nationally ypg (430), #27 ypp (6.1). Notably, their rushing attack is not equal to their passing attack - only averaging 4.2 ypc #70, and 160 ypg #69.

Our defense was sliced and diced by Gabriel & Co., showing major holes in the second level. Our LBers and Safeties were noticeably picked on. Was it situational? Obviously each game is different, but does anyone fear our defense was not as good as we were led to believe so far this season? What goes into the next two weeks as Tom Allen works to fix issues?
Not predicting against us but speed kills and SMU has plenty of that but lack other things they will need to beat PS in a very unfriendly environment.

The weather influences a game. Drops influence a game. Everything influences games. Your only option EVER us to find a way to win. The refs will make mistakes. It's simply part of the game and never the reason you win it lose.

Your last statement is further proving my point. You still believe that is an excuse for losing. Its not. It's part of the game. Always has been. Always will be.

I'm so tired of people being unable to accept when we lose its on the players and the staff not the refs.

Speed will be offset slightly by grass surface (they play at home on turf and only played 3 games on grass all year: Stanford, Duke and UVA) and the cold weather.

Also, the idea that PSU isn't fast is silly.

I don't know that anyone suggested that as a Team we aren't fast but SMU has some guys on O and D who are exceptional in the speed department. They will provide a good test assuming thye weather isn't a factor for them.

Who is so fast for them? Their QB? Is there back 7 on defense just unbelievably fast?

For all the talk about how dynamic their qb is, Jennings averages 4.1 ypc. Allar averages 3.9. In the CCGs, Allar had 5 carries for 54 yards and a td, Jennings had 10 for 35 and a td.

The only top 50 defenses SMU has faced are BYU (20th) and Duke (44th). Clemson's is 66th.

All good points but I'm still expecting that on their first drive we will make Jennings look like a perfect combination of Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. Would be nice if Tom Allen was faster on the uptake.

Appreciate those stats. Just one comment, PSU only faced a few high powered offenses: Oregon, OSU, and USC. We'll have to see how both offenses respond to the weather and which team is able to avoid or minimize turnovers at crucial points in the game.

Let's hope that doesn't happen on Saturday. Both sides of the ball for PSU need to start fast. Defense needs to play a whole disciplined game, avoid overrunning plays, and tackle at first contact.

We need DDS and Durant to have good games. Can't solely rely on Carter. Their plan will be to avoid Carter and account for him as best they can. That plan falls apart if Durant and DDS can win their matchups more often than not and harass Jennings while disrupting plays.

I watched the first half of the SMU Clemson game while working out last night.

I did not see any players on SMU that were scary fast (fast, yes. But nothing different than we've seen from USC, UW, OSU and UO).

Couple of other observations:

1) The SMU left tackle was getting beaten like a drum. This led to a strip sack on the first series. The Clemson DE (Parker) is very good, but Carter (and I think DDS) are just as good. They didnt seem to be giving him any help (RB or TE chip) which seems like a recipe for PSU's DEs to have career days.

2) Their QB made some BAD decisions under pressure, including throwing a horrible INT when he was trying to throw the ball away. He made some nice throws when he had time to throw, but the I also counted 3 bad drops by their WR. I can't imagine that cold conditions on Saturday will help their WRs' hands.

3) SMU's RB is undersized (less than 200 lbs; I believe he used to be a WR) but runs hard and has speed. Need to wrap him up before he gets to the second level.

4) SMU's pass defense looked suspect. On Clemson's first TD, the safety came up thinking the QB was going to run (on a roll out) and the Clemson WR was completely uncovered and walked into the endzone.

5) SMU committed some bad penalties early. SMU is a highly penalized team (they committed SEVENTEEN penalties against Cal). Hopefully we'll see some of those holding penalties called that haven't been all season.

I will try to watch the second half while working out tonight and will update this if I have any other notes.

Well one thing for sure is that QB will get pressure on Sat and probably lots of it.
