Looks like Mullen committed to V Tech to wrestle and play football

I have no idea how scholarship counts work for two sport athletes. I think it counts for football? Like you can't take a scholarship in wrestling and not count as football right? Otherwise SEC teams would be creating wrestling teams just to tuck away 10 more players lol.

Lol ok and? Is there more to that? Penn state hands out scholarships too to guys like Mullen if they have them. They are referred to as depth guys. Nothing wrong with being the 3rd best DE in your schools class, i was just making the observation to the OP that edge wasn’t a particular dire need for tech football
Penn State would absolutely not have offered Jim Mullen to play football. It was more than a little surprising to see him get a VT football offer.

If you play football, any athletic scholarship counts against football.

Otherwise SEC schools would have 240-lb tennis players who run a 4.4 40.

Never said Penn state would have offered Mullen. Penn State however offers guys of similar caliber and prestige as Mullen who may never even see the field. Penn state football and wrestling also seem to only offer a hand when needed such as Jan joining the wrestling team or Nevills joining the football team.

. . . The off-season in wrestling is where I really jumped levels in college and he won’t have that because football takes up so much time
Just curious — what percentage of that jump do you feel was physical/skills vs. mental/emotional maturation?

I appreciate your point but it’s just not correct. The closest comparable commits in Rivals rankings (which are another discussion) are Tyriq Blanding or Zion Tracy who have infinitely more impressive offer lists and are rated more highly on other sites.

Tracy, for instance, is On3’s 540th ranked composite player. Blanding 812. Mullen 1,819.

Mullen isn’t considered a Power 5 player by the majority of college staffs or ranking services. It’s downright shocking to see him get a VT football offer. Penn State is generally asking that similar caliber of player to be a preferred walk-on.

A bit of both for sure but I feel like mostly it was physical/skills. During the season so much time was taken up with travel, cutting weight, and making sure starters were ready to go while in the offseason we were able to work a ton on technique and also in the weight room. I got way stronger and just technically better as well. Our assistant coach was Adam Disabato who was still competing and in the offseason I was able to go with him almost daily. The mental gains were big too but I feel like it went hand in hand with me getting better. I just felt like I belonged and knew I could compete at that level

Exactly. He's no Chad Powers.

Thanks — I appreciate the firsthand account. It’s always interesting to hear about personal experiences and perspective.

I appreciate the points you are trying to make. However looking at 247 and rivals, you can filter by offers. Once you see the hundreds of athletes that Penn state offers you will see that some athletes are nationally on the same level as Mullen. And to your point just because you receive a Power 5 scholarship doesn’t mean you are power 5 caliber and they are just depth and a body to fill a roster spot on the depth chart. But again a lot of athletes also prove the rankings wrong.

Filtering by listed offers can be tricky because Penn State “offers” dozens if not hundreds of kids each year that can’t actually make a commitment.

A lot of times kids have what’s called an “uncommitable offer” where the school is making a good will offer with either the intent of boosting the prospect’s national profile (builds good will with HS coaches) or putting the kid on the backburner in case other prospects fall through.

Don’t see many guys turning down the football lifestyle and full scholarship and perks to wrestle. Would be surprised if Mullen does.
This and it's obvious football is way higher on Mullen's priority list. Pretty clear the holdup from him committing anywhere was he was trying to find a school that would take him as a Football commit as well.

The days of Jim Nance and Curley Culp are long gone, I'm afraid.

The next Jim Brown could still be out there, as those two college seasons don't overlap so dramatically.

Out of curiosity, I noticed Nevills not on FB roster this year.

Was his participation meant for just one year?
