Nick Suriano is on his way out of Happy Valley.

Penn State athletics released a statement on Tuesday afternoon, saying the rising sophomore's request to be released from the program to Rutgers has been granted.

"Nick Suriano recently requested a release so that he could transfer to Rutgers. We granted this release," the statement said.

Reports had been swirling for the past few days that the Nittany Lions would block any request to transfer within the Big Ten, but that is now not the case.

The Paramus, New Jersey native will now head back to his home state to continue his wrestling career, but he will not compete this season.

Per NCAA and Big Ten policy, Suriano will have to sit out for one season because he is transferring within the conference.

...how can Rutgers make a financial offer to an athlete who is receiving
Athletic aid from another Big 10 member?
... sounds like tampering to me...
... but thas jes my opinion... :)

I was really a supporter, fan and advocate of Nick. I thought he was going to be one of our most heralded recruits and thought he would win it all even after the Gilman match. Now that he's leaving - why I can't imagine - but he's now an enemy and we need to find someone who can beat him wearing a blue/white singlet - easier said than done but hope he gets his ass kicked from here on out.

Now I can root for Spencer Lee to kick his ass.

Honestly, the team is better off without him. Good luck to the kid. He was outstanding last year and looked like a typical Cael/PSU athlete. But something's obviously missing. Homesick? It's a little over 3 hours. PSU has thousands of students from Jersey. If the kid is homesick, he doesn't have the make up to be in the room with the class of wrestlers Penn St attracts.

No inside info; most speculation I've seen is homesick and/or better financial package at Rutgers
If the financial package aspect is true it means someone from Rutgers was recruiting a student athlete who was already enrolled and competing at another school. How else would he know what Rutgers was offering? Sounds like some kind of violation to me. I'm sure the NCAA and B1G will be all over it.

Good luck at Rutgers.
I'd imagine his individual success will continue to be plentiful, but not so much for any team success.
May you beat everyone and anyone NOT in a PSU singlet.

Financial package??? You can find a way to make things work especially now a days....it was a real struggle 30-40 years ago compared to today. I have to imagine that, at worst, he'd be paying 1/2 tuition which would be like an in state PA state school tuition of $20K/year. There's something really strange with this.

My guess is that there is something personal going on which doesn't involve his wrestling career. Wait and see.

It would be if Rutgers made a direct contact with Suriano. But in cases like this intermediaries are used and the NCAA won't give a hoot.

Would it be that big a secret if he could get a full scholarship at Rutgers, and Penn State could only allocate 1/2?

I don't see what the issue would be here. Penn State is expensive as hell for out of state kids, and if PSU couldn't fully cover the cost of attendance then he should be able to go somewhere else. People's financial situations can change.

This could be all be solved by Rutgers leaving the conference effective immediately. It would make Suraino immediately eligible and teach that big mean bully Cael a lesson.

Just curious on his commitment to PSU and Lee's to Iowa. Who went first? Double disappointing if in anyway his commitment to PSU drove Lee to Iowa. Already, not a good day for the Nits. Next man up.... Keener?

Good I'm glad PSU let him go. Best for both parties.

Doesn't want to be here you let him go. I am sure we will be just fine without him

Only plausible reason is that he wants to go bigger and knows he can't beat Gavin or RBY.

I wouldn't think so but his old man must be pissed off at something....must be 3 guys above him that are at least as good, if not better, which could prevent him from starting down the road.

Has the chance after this season to be the big fish in the Rutgers ocean and chase some national titles. At Penn State with 5 national champs returning and a talented load of recruits on the way Nick would have been a talented piece of the puzzle....Good luck to him versus everyone else.

You know it kind of ironic how the NCAA and conferences hold these athletes to a higher standard. Pitt did the same thing with our basketball player who wanted to play at UNC. Coaches can leave on a whim.

The difference is that if a school or the NCAA tried to restrict movement of a coach, they'd be sued inside of five minutes....and they'd lose. Too bad the courts haven't had the balls to apply the same standards to athletes.

Better off w/o him? Did you see our record at that weight class w/o him?

Does he lose a year of eligibility with this move?

Did you see the championship PSU won w/o him??
I didn't say PSU couldn't win a championship w/o him.

I wish the kid good luck but I think the team was stronger with him. I'm constantly amazed how people think we're better off w/o the kids we lose.

He'll never be an enemy... really... that is just pathetic. Wish the kid the best, but I hope whoever PSU puts in to replace him beats him during every match they meet.

Way to pass judgement on a young man...

Seriously this is just really low class from the two of you.

I'd be very sympathetic based on finances. If he's only on partial scholarship -- well PSU out-of-state costs $50k a year, so even after a scholarship he might be looking at a bill of $40k.

Rutgers, he could attend at in-state tuition rates and save $20k a year. No doubt there are other considerations but people should attend a school where they don't have to borrow $80-100k to get a four year degree.

Without knowing details of his specific family finances, or the amount/percentage of his scholarship at PSU, I'd say you're dead on here. Forgetting about maybe some coach's hurt feelings etc. I think it's smart to realize the difference between financial packages wrestlers or swimmers or golfers or track & field may receive as opposed to football or basketball. It's night and day.

Suriano was getting close to a full ride at PSU, according to reports. He would have had pay less to attend PSU this year than he would have to at Rutgers.

IF that's the case, one would have to wonder what other reasons there could be behind this transfer...simply wanting to be closer to home...girlfriend...family health issues...just not happy at PSU...
