Lower to Mid-Priced Laptops....

The last few messages including mine don't make sense now that the mods integrated the non-sequitur stand-alone thread started by EMC with this one.

Oh well. Fun while it lasted

I'm surprised to hear that. I've owned all Apple products my whole life....never would buy anything else.

Nobody else integrates their products like Apple does....try syncing your Dell laptop with your Dell phone. lol

I don't want to sync my laptop with my phone! I just want to throw a few mp3s on my iphone to use as ring tones. NOPE! Can't do that! You have to load some bloated itunes software (that converts all the files away from the industry standard mp3 by the way) on both the laptop and the phone and either do full syncing, or spend the time setting up some customize sync.

If you think the syncing is one of the virtues of apple, then we're on two completely different planets with what we want from our devices.

As others have said, don't get anything fancy, its just overkill. The basics - 4 GB ram (operating system uses about 1 GB, programs about 1-2). Other than that its pretty much just what size you want. More than 4 GB will go unused.

Hey 91Joe95... 2006 want's it's information about computer RAM usage back. :)

It's one of the main reasons why Apple is so successful. All their products are fully integrated with one another. Most people like that advantage.

you don't need itunes on a computer to have ringtones on your iphone, you don't even need a computer. where do you get this shit from?

Totally agree. I have had nothing but good experiences with my Apple products. Not so much with the windows based machines.

Ok awesome. Can you tell me how i can put an mp3 on my iphone that I can then set as my alarm (or ring tone) without itunes? TIA.

:)

Well, I still have my 80 year old parents running an XP laptop on 2 GB ram. I will add the disclaimer that I don't stream video on my computers or play games on them, so my requirements, similar to the op's are not very high.

That is such a ridiculous question I don't even know how to respond.
1. you can't use an mp3 on your iphone (I think you know that)
2. itunes is on your iphone
3 you don't need itunes on your computer to get ringtones/songs on your iphone, and then set a ringtone/song for your alarm (you don't even need a computer; you do need an iphone). it is, however, incredibly easy and intuitive to do this. I am sure you can figure it out

Either spend the extra and get an Apple or just buy a PC and pray. It such a crap shoot these days with laptops. Name any brand and you will find people who had good experiences and bad. The thing is that now a days all the computer companies use the same components. Some models use good components other do not. Figuring which model has good components or bad is near impossible. The advantage to Apple is they have essentially 3 models. When they release a model it been tested and refined. You know you getting a refined product. It would be like comparing a car company who made 3 types a cars a year compared to one who try's to release a new one every couple of months and doesn't take the time to source and perfect the vehicle. Your paying more and it might not be the most advanced but you know it going to last.

I'm running 6 GB on mine with a 5th generation i3... no issues. My parents have basically the same computer only with 4 GB and I didn't experience any issues when I used it before.

It's so easy to swap out RAM that it just doesn't make sense to pay a premium to have extra installed before your purchase the PC. You can get a pair of 4 GB memory modules (for 8 total) for under $50. Buy a computer with 4 to start and if you don't like the performance you can upgrade for it cheap.

I know tht's true with a desktop, but i thought laptop memory was more expensive, and not as easy to add to or swap out. No?

No. Its very easy to swap laptop memory. Just be sure and check with the laptop mfg. for the max size your laptop will support and the type of memory and order it on line. Since memory prices have come down the computer mfgs have included more on many laptops. If your computer is already fast enough, and you don't regularly do a lot of multi-tasking you may not need more.

I just google'd and found this:

-----------------------------------
How to Set an MP3 as a Ringtone on an iPhone
Apple's iPhone provides smartphone capabilities and allows you to customize it with unique ringtones. You can make a ringtone from an MP3 file, but you cannot automatically add an MP3 file as a ringtone. However, iTunes will let you convert any song you already have to the correct format. After renaming the files, your iPhone will recognize it as a ringtone as long as it's no longer than 30 seconds, the iPhones ringtone length limit.

Start iTunes, and find the song you want to use as a ringtone. If you haven't added it to your library yet, drag and drop the song into iTunes from its folder.

Right-click the music file to view its information. From the "Options" tab, you'll want to specify a start and end time for a total of 30 seconds. For example, if the song starts at 2:30, it must end at 3:00 to meet the maximum requirements for ringtones on iPhones. Click "Ok" to close the tab.

Right-click the song once more, and select the option to create an AAC version. ITunes will convert your specified 30 seconds into a new song.

Open another folder to temporarily store your AAC copy. Click and drag the song from iTunes to this new folder. Alternatively, you can just drag it to your desktop if you find this easier. Delete the clip from your iTunes library.

Reset the start and end times of the original song, otherwise the device on which you are playing the song will not play the whole song, just those 30 seconds.

Right-click and choose "Rename." Type in ".m4r" after the file name so it will be "[Song name].m4r". Hit "Enter" or click on a blank space in the folder. Renaming switches the file format to make it compatible with your iPhone.

Double-click the file, and iTunes will automatically open it as a ringtone.

Sync your iPhone and the song will now be in your ringtones list.

WTF!? Are you kidding me??

With an Android, you just copy the mp3 on to your phone, then choose the file that you want for your ringtone (either the default, or for a particular caller).

Nope, it is just as cheap now and is even easier to install than in a desktop. There will be an access panel held in by a screw on the bottom of the laptop. Take that off and the RAM modules will be right there (typally, there are only two slots for them). Just remember to always replace RAM with identical pairs. Mixing modules can work, but you may run into issues if they are not indentical.
