Mat Chat with ref Mike Hagerty

Ref Mike Hagerty generated a lot of posts on this board from the PSU - Ok. St. National Dual Championship match. He participated in a recent Mat Chat, and was very forthcoming about NCAA rules, how college refs operate, etc.. Near the end of the segment he addressed the Gulibon - Heil match, and then also responded to questions about the Hall - Valencia and the Hall - BoJo matches from Nationals.

Thats how I saw it too But of course, he had a lot better view than I and more authority that day.

Gulibon/Heil Hagerty was "kinda waiting for the other referee to make the call on a takedown". I wonder if that referee was waiting on Hagerty to make the call.

I think Hagerty said he got the Zain match wrong. Legs in, then the bottom guy stands, stall warning goes on the bottom guy. That is the rule. He did not apply the rule correctly.

Although I felt the pin should have been called, still pics are not the endgame of a move, as we saw clear as day in the Mark vs Bojo final. Still pics are not everything.

Still, Jimmy pinned him, but whatever. Heil will be going up against somebody else in Blue and White next year at 141.

yeah, he said his shoulders were not down... guess he meant the top of them.

The one thing he completely fails to mention in regards to Gulibon-Heil is that he failed to even get down on the mat and look for the fall for a prolonged period of time the first time Jimmy stacked and pinned Heil. Putting the blown TD call off onto the 2nd Official is weak if you ask me.

Hat's off to Mike for doing this. Some may not like what he says, but going public with his views deserves huge kudos. Handled it with class too.

Not the first time we heard about the challenges of being an NCAA wrestling referee. The rulebook review happens this year...wonder what changes will be made?
