I read a rumor the owner fired him now in the hopes he'll get a college job and the owner won't have to pay out as much money. He will get a quality college job soon, but I think he’s too smart to go to Nebraska. He has 40 million owed to him so he can certainly afford to be picky.
it is pretty rare that a college coach's skill set translates to the NFL. It is hard to find a college HC that had no or limited NFL experience being successful in the NFL.
I think the CLE coach is really good but ownership hasn't done them any favors with the mess they created with Deshaun Watson crap.I get a kick out of the NFL . Denver, Chicago , Detroit, NYJ, Cleveland and at least four other teams are no better but maybe worse with new coaches in the last 5 to 10 years than staying the course with their present coach.
I wonder if he would be interested in Auburn. The booster situation may make him look elsewhere. His name gets mentioned frequently as a top candidate for Arizona State.
Agree, I’m at ASU 1st as well. If they ever get really serious about football they should be in the top 2-3 annually in the PAC. Crap, knowing what I know now, I would’ve went to ASU!His name gets mentioned frequently as a top candidate for Arizona State.
I agree. It wouldn't be a shock if ND went looking, again, this year. Auburn too. We could also see the NFL poach several coaches from major programs.Rhule would be a fool to not wait for big job. Nebraska, ASU and Wisconsin have limited upside. I'm not sure you can make them what the fan base wants them to be which is a feudal cause.
I don't think ND would fire Freeman after 1 year. Doesn't seem Iike their style.I agree. It wouldn't be a shock if ND went looking, again, this year. Auburn too. We could also see the NFL poach several coaches from major programs.
Okay, I like Matt Rhule. Much respect as a PSU guy. Also I know him to be a real life nice guy.
But on a board that rips the entrails from coaches.....do you just ignore that he's had some pretty lousy seasons? I know....I know he has taken on some difficult jobs, but 4 10 loss seasons out of 10?
I get that he did a great job at Temple.....but Baylor always seems pretty good. So he weathered the controversy there and got them back on track.
Has anyone turned a 47-40 college record into more $$$$$.
My point is this.....he needs to choose his next move very judiciously.
I think the move was a common 'we're one good player away' mentality, and giving away a lot for that 'missing piece'. I will say their backup seems more than capable.I think the CLE coach is really good but ownership hasn't done them any favors with the mess they created with Deshaun Watson crap.
I like Matt and I think he's a solid football guy. But, I it's funny how some here evaluate things.During his tenure at Baylor, Rhule's teams never defeated a ranked team. I think he needs another rebuilding project. Seems to be his thing. He took Joe Brady with him to Carolina. Did they recreate the '19 LSU offense there? No. Now Brady is QB coach for Buffalo. Can't wait until he gets credit for Josh Allen.
Al Golden somehow turned 27-34 into the Miami job for 4+ years of mediocrity...not as much money but still insane.Has anyone turned a 47-40 college record into more $$$$$.
Good point. Maybe this explains why Pete Carroll was better his second time around in the NFL.NFL is also a lot of timing and luck. How many AFC East coaches got fired because Tom Brady played nearly 2 decades at New England?
Obviously management plays a big function. Cleveland and the Jets and Jacksonville have drafted high for the last 20 years and haven't been able to climb out of cellar dwellership beyond a fluke season or 2.
NFL is very systemic as well. The best college coaches seem to have an authoritarian aura in how they treat players. They publicly live and die on every play. The top NFL coaches seem to be better at meshing personalities and delegating responsibilities.
I could see him taking the Nebraska job. I don't think Wisconsin will pursue him. Fully expect them to keep that inhouse. Auburn would be the best job for Rhule but I could see him wanting Nebraska. He has connections in Texas which would help.
Georgia Tech is a very interesting job. I do think they're going to try to get Deion Sanders (though I think that would end badly if he took it) but Rhule would definitely be an interesting fit there.Problem with Rhule’s connections is he's still only known for recruiting guys who fit his system vs 4* and 5* guys. Maybe the NFL gig helps that some?
Auburn is a suicide mission, but probably offers the most money and best access to recruits.
Nebraska would be a good spot, but how quickly can he turn them around? Only 2 Texas HS in their current class. Since '19, just 5. Is it the lack of a Big 8 / Big 12 schedule or did Frost neglect Texas?
Wisconsin will keep Leonhard unless he loses 4+. Unless they were eying Leipold AND he says yes.
Team I've heard. Georgia Tech. Little brother in a great recruiting area a la Baylor. Conference slate isn't SEC nor Big 10. Expectations won't be tremendous initially. And the kicker:
Auburn might just be open again in 2-3 years with Saban closer to retirement. Lol
The current Michigan state coach is getting paid as well. It’s crazy how some of these guys fall into things.Al Golden somehow turned 27-34 into the Miami job for 4+ years of mediocrity...not as much money but still insane.
Yeah, Mel Tucker somehow turned 5-7 at Colorado into the Michigan State job then got PAID for one good seasonThe current Michigan state coach is getting paid as well. It’s crazy how some of these guys fall into things.
Good for him but, in reality, more than anything that is such a sad commentary on the state of our nation in general and, more specifically, the value placed on the game of football.Matt Rhule will make $834,000 a month for the next 48 months courtesy of the Carolina Panthers.
Ehhh--David Tepper is worth, what, 10-15B and the Panthers are worth above 3B. He can just write Rhule a check for the full amount and not worry about it for a second.Good for him but, in reality, more than anything that is such a sad commentary on the state of our nation in general and, more specifically, the value placed on the game of football.
Just sayin...
When your average Joe Muttonhead puts more value on how his football team does rather than his job, family, etc, to the point where the value of a game is driven up to where a fired coach gets $40 mil as a parting gift I, personally, think that is sad.Ehhh--David Tepper is worth, what, 10-15B and the Panthers are worth above 3B. I don't think it's sad there's that kind of money involved. They've created a product that has high demand. If people enjoy it what's the problem
Nyj? 3-2 under pointless new coach which represents a pretty material improvementI get a kick out of the NFL . Denver, Chicago , Detroit, NYJ, Cleveland and at least four other teams are no better but maybe worse with new coaches in the last 5 to 10 years than staying the course with their present coach.
Why do you care what others spend their money on?When your average Joe Muttonhead puts more value on how his football team does rather than his job, family, etc, to the point where the value of a game is driven up to where a fired coach gets $40 mil as a parting gift I, personally, think that is sad.
I should clarify that the handful of pro football games I've ever attended in my life were tickets given to me and I rarely, if ever, watch pro football.
Again, just me and just sayin...
It is my opinion that, as a country, the United States would be a better place if the general populace read a book, or spent time with their family, or did a million other productive things, rather than sitting on their a$$ every Sunday to watch the NFL. If you agree to disagree I don't really care. Why do you care what others spend their money on?
It's literally no different than you spending money going to a Penn State game. See Franklin's contract and the players "officially" being paid by NIL.
So Franklin has a better record vs ranked teams?During his tenure at Baylor, Rhule's teams never defeated a ranked team. I think he needs another rebuilding project. Seems to be his thing. He took Joe Brady with him to Carolina. Did they recreate the '19 LSU offense there? No. Now Brady is QB coach for Buffalo. Can't wait until he gets credit for Josh Allen.
The same could be said about spending thousands of dollars and being away from your family for hours and hours playing golf or fishing. Everyone has different hobbies, it’s all about making it work.It is my opinion that, as a country, the United States would be a better place if the general populace read a book, or spent time with their family, or did a million other productive things, rather than sitting on their a$$ every Sunday to watch the NFL. To your 2nd point, due to many factors I haven't been to a PSU game in more than 30 years. When I donate to the college of my choice it is always to their academic scholarship fund, never to an athletic dept.
Agree 100%. The outrageous salary numbers tossed around pro football, however, point to what I believe is a level of 'dedication' from its fans that make it far more problematic than golf, fishing or probably any other hobby or pastime. The same could be said about spending thousands of dollars and being away from your family for hours and hours playing golf or fishing.
