If one player gets out of hand cut him. And not only that don't tell him. Just leak it to the media and let him find out on espn.com of some other media outlet.

Yeah. Because that endears a coach to players.
Buddy Ryan did stuff like that and players who stayed in line lover him.
I remember Andy Reid had a problem with a player and made him push a blocking sled around the practice field with media and cameras all over the place.
Then cut him the next day.

He definitely needs to recruit and also build a relationship with his players currently on the team at Baylor. Hopefully he can get a staff assembled quickly.

Yeah, they are professionals. These are 18-22 kids and Rhule is walking into a situation where he has to change the culture - and your idea of doing this is to leak out the kid got cut into social media and not speak directly to the kid and/or his family first?

Seriously?

A coach sets this kind of example, what chances does he have of recruiting kids to his program? The kids make the choice to attend the University, they are not drafted into the University.

Just not really a good move.

I'll just say Baylor's culture us similar to Penn State's:

a lot of the rot is at the top

George hageman. Something like that

I hope this works out for Matt but I do have a slight concern for him. I don't know a lot about Baylor except that Briles turned the program around possibly in large part by bringing in a bunch of thugs. Often times in those situations the people in charge say they want t a change in culture but they want that change to occur without sacrificing wins. Remember when Miami wanted Al Golden to come in and clean things up? He seemed to do that but still got fired.
Matt is going to be an outsider in Big 12 country and in Waco. He will need to show pretty fast results IMO to get off on the right foot. One would think he will need to surround himself with a few coaches with Texas ties for recruiting purposes.

Matt's a great coach in my opinion. I can't help but feel this is a bad fit for him though. I really hope I'm wrong.

I think you are spot on. My only beef is that they recruit kids like everyone else and scapegoated the football program for enterprise wide violations in terms of under reporting violent crime allegations.
Regardless, I just got off the phone with a Baylor season ticket holder. Here was the upshot of the convo

  • just as you said, Rhule is a good hire to clean up the program. But he's a slow growth guy. He has traditionally run a pro set offense with a tough defense. Think PSU or Stanford.
  • Baylor has taken great pride in the run it up and down the field offense...often scoring 50+ points per game. Will Rhule adjust or will the fans (or nobody)?
  • TX is a different culture and that will be a challenge for Rhule when recruiting. He's got no ties there.
  • On the other hand, what Rhule did for Temple cannot be overlooked. Solid football, good kids, top-notch program under challenging circumstances.
  • word is that Rhule is bringing in a spread offense guy. A guy who used to coach at Baylor but moved onto an OC position. I can't recall his name. But he's a TX guy who likes that style of offense.
  • I am glad they didn't hire JoeMo, as he'd have been a good fit there.
