Maybe what we need to do is commit to the run game

as our base offense. I mean no disrespect to Hack as from all appearances he is a first class kid in every respect. But we all know the old Bill Parcells adage that "you are what your record says you are". In Hack's case his stats have been remarkably consistent starting with the week after the great OT win over Michigan in 2013.
Since that game - and this includes 6 games/half a season under O'Brien - Hack has completed around 57% of his passes. That is a span of 20 games. In that span he played two great games (Wiscy in 2013 and BC last year). In those two games, 7 TD's and 0 picks. In the other 18 games he has thrown 13 TD and 20 INT; his completion % in those 18 games is just under 57% (57% under O'Brien and 56% under Franklin). In those 18 games he has completed over 50% of his passes 10 times and 8 times he was under 50%. He has thrown more INT than TD in 9 of the 18 games. When we include his two greatest games, in the span of 20 games he has had FOUR games where he completed over 50% of his passes and threw more TD's than INT. To me, that stat is stunning. All in all these numbers are Morelliesque. At best. Again, 30% of these games were under O'Brien's tutelage with a veteran o-line and arguably the greatest WR in modern PSU history.
What I conclude from this is not that CH is not a great prospect and talent. But maybe it's time to stop relying on him to win games for us and start to game plan to win with great defense and a great running game. The run game will set up play action and will take pressure off of Hack. In a worst case scenario where our run game is woeful, we may still have a better chance to win the game. When we were tied with Temple at 10-10 late 3rd quarter my mindset was that PSU needs to win this game by forcing a turnover and playing conservative football. Unfortunately it went the opposite way.
Again, not intending to bash Hack but rather taking perhaps a more realistic approach to what a formula is that will give PSU its best chance to win.
