Mejia not going to Illini...free agent....

To summarize what I heard on BCR podcast- Mejia reported his summer school grades rather than both original and summer school in a couple of instances on his application. Illinois called that a fraudulent application or something like that, and therefore did not accept him.

Just my opinion- this doesn't seem like a huge offense. Aren't there people (coaches) to help straighten out oversights like this?

Yeah. Just listened to the interview on my lunch run.
1. Application error was for "falsifying" his application by putting only his two summer school grades (A and B) on the application, while the application required both the initial grades and also the newer grade. He fixed the application, but the application was denied under the Illinois review board
2. Mark Perry is "his man".
3. He decommitted from Iowa because the funding offer wasn't to his liking
4. He never took an official to Iowa, and still has two officials left
5. He just got off the phone with Tom Brands, and is also considering MN and $OSU
6. He wants the assistant coaches to be younger guys that can relate to him. Mentioned that Ryan and Eggum were older, but had younger assistants
7. He waited until the last second to submit his application
8. Wants/Needs to make his decision in the next two weeks. I think he hinted that wants to go to Iowa, but his parents were contacting MN and $OSU as he said he'd have made the decision already (and that MN and $OSU would be the last 2 official visits)
9. He ended the interview interestingly, in my opinion. When asked to add anything (I would have guessed he would have said that he is ready to put any issues behind him and get on the mat and classroom and work hard, make the new team and fans proud), but went down the path of if anyone has anything to say about me, then have them say it to me to my face, because if I see them, I'll let them know.

I do believe that when Perry left Illinois, that he did a major procrastinate, as he didn't really want to go there w/o Perry, and that Illinois wasn't too hot after Justin w/o Perry pushing it along. Sounds mutual to me

So does this mean the Hawk fans think Teasdale is flipping back to IA?
How does this affect their chances with RBY?

Good for both Mejia and Iowa. I do see him as a career backup for Lee, but I'm sure he doesn't feel that way. Clearly he'd always wanted to be a Hawkeye. And considering 125 might be the second most difficult weight to successfuly recruit, when you factor in Lee's recent major shoulder and knee surgeries, it makes sense for Iowa to take a (bit) of a flier on the kid. This assuming he can get past admissions this time.

It's a weird world when the 2nd 4-time Cali high school champ in history is considered a "flier". (I was hoping Mejia would help Fresno State's resurgence but I wish him the best @ Iowa.)

Iowa City is the best lightweight environment in USA wrestling right now. Mejia obviously has work to do and he knows the best place for him to achieve those lofty goals. Congrats and best of luck to him!

WT where do you think he fits in at 133? Thats a lot of "college weight" to put on. I think he needs a RS, but he may just be your best option at 125 this year, which makes the SLee RS even easier. Then Lee comes out with the hammer down the next year and mejia RSs.

If that could happen I could see a scenario where Lee is so darn good he could reasonably go up to 133 and let Mejia stay down at 125. If not, mejia goes up and again can he put on the needed to college weight?

Its a good problem to have because at least you have options.

Really hard to say right now. 133 seems like a long term plan. All i know is Iowa just regained a talented option for the future at 125/133. Solid depth is mandatory nowadays at D-1 especially at the lower weights

Not really. PSU had injuries at 125 and 133 leaving them 0 points at nationals this year....they still ran away from the field. Having depth at those two weights isn't any more important than any other weights.

Quality depth at 125 and 285 is the most important imo. It's hard to come by. And yes, your murderers' row of top recruits from 49-84 certainly put up the points. A nice luxury to have.

It seems like just last year we had Nico and Conaway in the same situation.

It was amusing reading in the Suriano Transfer thread on HR and how Penn State all of a sudden had a environment problem in the room when the reality is that Iowa seems to have the problem keeping their guys on the roster. I suspect Meja will be added to this list of top 50 recruits that didn't last at Iowa over the past several years.

Seth Gross
Burke Paddock
Broc Berge
Aaron Bradley
Jake Marlin
Nate Skonieczny
Anthony Baldasaro

Not really sure what road you are headed down. Is this where i look up all of the wrestling recruits that didn't pan out at PSU? I can think of 5 without looking anything up. But i dont really want to travel that road today.:)

All of our recruits become nationals champs. It's in the sales brochure.

Interesting Post on the Cyclone board:

"Hearing that Iowa's staff told Mejia that they were able to get him admitted to school, but that it wasn't true. Now he is stuck in Limbo. May grayshirt and reopen recruitment next season."

btw, that's the road I was headed down WildTurk.

Those application errors can be very stubborn and hard to shake! :)

Mejia clearly wants to be at Iowa. Lets let it play out. Kellan Stout was added to your list of guys not having fun at PSU. Appears he is headed down a different road of happiness. Not every recruit works out and thats ok, because it happens at every College will continue to forever..

Yes, attrition happens at every program but Iowa's is higher then normal and there is a big difference between losing guys that are supposed to be quality starters and backups looking for an opportunity to wrestle. That being said, feel free to point out the next highly ranked PSU recruit that isn't going to work out prior to it happening. It won't bother me in the least bit, in fact I'd even be interested in your reasoning.

You went down the road and i joined you. What else do you want? I remember several scenarios of people fitting Stout in the lineup. Some recruits just don't pan out.

I said Meja was one of those guys that wouldn't pan out and it looks like I was correct yet somehow you are still debating this with me. What else do you want?

I think "not panning out" is a little harsh. Just didn't win the spot here is all and wanted to go home.

You have a 19 page thread devoted to whether your # 1 recruit will pan out. Mejia wants to be a Hawk and Nick wants to be in New Jersey right now. The truth is neither one of us knows what will happen. Lot of false speculation in the offseason. Never fails

Thats harsh? I didn't mean it to be harsh. Didn't work out? Homesick? Unhappy? However you want to word it. My bad

False speculation, are you saying the information is wrong and Meja will be on the roster in the Fall?

Honestly im a little edgy myself. I had two Ribeye steaks sitting on the counter for 30 min getting to room temperature and my cat knocked them down on the floor. He has never liked human food either. I keep a clean floor and will still eat it, but it will never feel right.

Meja wont be on the roster. Mejia may gray shirt, be on the roster, or elsewhere. Only time will tell
World speed record for backtracking on a definitive statement. Next sentence in the post.

Don't worry, Turk, just bustin'. I like you even if you are the enemy.;)

Ugh .... ribeyes ....

I'd feed your cat to the angry neighbor dog.
