I was always a Mel Stottlemyre fan. Reading the above story it referenced an inside the park grand slam Stottlemyre hit in 1965. I was at the park and I remember it like it was yesterday.
I was 9 years old and it was a day game . I went to see Mickey Mantle, but my idol who was playing left field was hidden from my view by a steel girder used to hold up the stadium roof.
The bases were loaded with less than two out. It was in the middle innings. The outfield was playing very shallow for a possible play at the plate. Stottlemeyre hit a line drive that split the left and center fielder. It rolled to the wall at the 457 sign and stopped. I don't think the outfielder fielded the ball cleanly. Mel was fast, raced around the bases and beat the throw home.
