First and foremost, let's not forget why we observe Memorial Day. While it's known as the unofficial start to summer, I think it's important to remember all those who served and gave their greatest gift, life, to protect our right to live free. Their sacrifice, no matter your political persuasion, should be honored to the greatest extent possible by all Americans.

So what is everyone doing this Memorial Day weekend? I think this year we're going to have a quiet Holiday. We'll attend the local parade and honor those fallen heroes and probably do a little grilling at some point but other than that, just getting some stuff done around the house.

In the past, back when I coached little league, I gathered up our 7 to 12 year olds and joined with one of the local American legions to go place flags on Veteran's graves at a local cemetary. It was an incredible teaching experience for both the adults and kids. The cemetary we went to had Vets from the Revolutionary War through to the current war in the Middle East. Both sad and satisfying at the same time.

Happy Memorial Day to all.
