Slow start, giving up easy baskets on pick & roll. Furman is double teaming Pickett.

Then as I post this Dread hits three 3p shots. Most of the offense is created by Pickett penetrating and kicking out.

Was 46-29 PSU up at the half. PSU shooting very well until just before the half.

I still have it a little queued up as I stopped it to eat lunch and clean up the dishes for the boss......

Big 2nd half collapse but fortunately held on. Didn't get out to defend 3s and got beat in the paint. Gave up 14 offensive rebounds.

PSU's offense is Pickett taking his man into the paint and either scoring or kicking it out for 3. Wynter was a nice pickup but the offense struggles when he replaces Pickett at the point.

VT won the ACC last year. They'll be a tougher match up than Furman.

73-68 PSU Final

What I don't understand was the set up of Funk for shots over and over when it was obvious that today was not his day. He missed shot after shot. Ok, he's a shooter at Guard. But this team has a good many options for shooters at Guard. And when the game is on the line with under 8 minutes to go and the other team is making a run it is time to set up players that have shown up for the critical shots down the stretch of a game.

It seems as if second half collapses are very common with this program despite who's coaching them. Is it because the shooters just get tired later in the game or just get tight? It just seems like they always have trouble managing a game.

Lack of an inside game on offense seems to have a lot to do with it. They can’t get a big lead then just pound it inside to hold onto that lead.

I think it was 3 things
  • PSU shooting was ridiculous early on. IIRC something like 70% with a few minutes to go in the half. They were bound to cool off.
  • Pickett getting into foul trouble. PSU's offense struggles with Pickett on the bench. They also struggled when he came back in because he was playing soft in order to avoid his 4th foul.
  • Furman made adjustments to try an minimize Pickett's impact.

Take the W. We will need it for any shot at the Dance.

Tomorrow's game vs VA Tech is pretty big. When was the last time PSU won a preseason tournament?
In forever. Would be HUGE to beat the Hokies. If not then we need to try to find a way to beat Clemson at Clemson in ACC/B10 challenge. Don't want to go 0-2 vs ACC.

The VA Tech game is that more important now as South Carolina and Davidson both lost and are not in our half of the bracket. We will face either Colorado St or Charleston in the third game. Charleston would at least count as a road game (as opposed to neutral) so there’s that.

Does it worry anyone that the heralded freshman guards get no run?
Yesterday I was more curious why we were getting eaten up under the basket and our 6' 10" Frosh Kebba Njie only played 11 minutes with 0 personal fouls. Seems like he could have helped, but I was working and only had the game on in the background so maybe I missed something.

Clary and Brown are not ready yet, coach will bring them along slowly, as with the bigs. He has a team full of seniors who can make it to the tournament if things go well, why would he bother playing young kids who are not ready?

Next year they will get plenty of time.
