Meyers, Coughlin, GAR, will merge beginning in 2019.

Saw that on the news last night. Was surprised I didn't hear anything about that prior locally. My nephew coaches HS boys soccer and has not mentioned anything about it. From what they stated on the news, there's really had no other option. I wonder if Scranton is not far behind.

From an athletics perspective, this means fewer athletes will be able to participate. That's been a big downside with jointures and school mergers.

From what my 90 yr old Father in Law tells me, back when the jointures were being setup, Plains Township was going to go in with Pittston Area, but politics got in the way. They needed their revenue to save the WB school district. He still curses in Italian over that.

To clarify, the high schools aren’t merging, they are just combining the athletic programs.

that's correct.

the linked article did contain this sentence:

"The merger ended nearly 10 months of speculation of when, or if, the three public schools would see their athletic programs merge before a planned new consolidated high school building is built."

Based on that, I would infer that a merging of the high schools is also in the works. However, one could also infer that a consolidation of the schools has been speculated but is not yet in the works.

Pocono (or others), can you clarify?

Scranton SD is far behind on everything. Just ask the Auditor General.

On another note, don't they have to get PIAA clearance to merge? Also, they showed a site that the new sports complex will be located. I wonder whom will get that contract?
