I know we barely see it with the exception of Jan Johnson who was a last second filler for the spot, but could we see a 2 sport varsity athlete in the coming years? I believe Micah is an individual who could make the transition very well, although he seems more of a 2nd half stud due to the football programs success and bowl scheduling. Wrestled in high school, and the speed and strength could very well turn into a plus. Thoughts on how he could fare on the mat after training in the room with our guys.

Not good

This is why adults make adult decisions. Franklin will tell him his wrestling fantasy isn't worth risking his NFL career for.

As for how he'd fare: Parsons hasn't wrestled since (I think) 8th grade. Johnson was a top 40 national wrestling recruit and was very obviously overmatched.

Eye in the Sky says the Micah Parsons Project isn't going to happen.

Yeah, this has MLB Michael Jordan all over it. Still, has to be a sign of a pretty healthy program that your 5 star football recruits want to compete for Cael. And I would pay to see him roll with the fellas.

I can't speak to Micah's prowess on the mat, but I can attest to his skills running the football.

Central PA defenses were just flat out outmatched trying to slow him down, it just seemed unfair. I recall watching him return a kickoff for a TD, against Bishop McDevitt I think, and thinking these kids have no shot at bringing him down. Local high school defenses had about as much success containing him as Iowa wrestlers have had with Bo Nickal, in other words, not much success. :)

Coach Franklin, if he wants to run the ball, I'd say let him run the ball. How cool would it be if he had a chance to run in a score against tOSU, after he almost went there.

Could have used him on 4th and 5...

I love the kid, what and awesome get for Franklin. He oozes ability. He might very well be the best pure athlete on the wrestling team the minute he walked on to the matt. Nolf might have a thing or two to say about that.

That said and toughness aside I don't know that he would remain motivated after only two weeks of practice. It might take two years of development to learn he might make a good JuCo wrestler.

He is reading to much of his own press, wrestling doesn't generate the general respect it deserves, and it may be one of the more humbling experiences in athletics. I marvel at how many multiple time state champs get their asses handed to them regularly at the D1 level.

I suspect Micha will be a three year starter, enter the draft, and buy a million dollar house, and reminisce about this days when he had silly thoughts. You gotta love the competitive attitude though.

If Parsons joined the wrestling team wouldn't he count as a full scholarship out of 9.9?

no, he would not

Reading through this and thinking about wrestling training and football training--reminds me of something Dave Joyner said many years ago. He was obviously a 2-sport man and was asked how he compared the conditioning you needed for football and what you needed for wrestling (I think that was pretty much the question). His response was something like "There's a big difference!", wrestling being more demanding. He should know something about that having had a 7 OT wrestle-off with Ira Lubert! I love PSU football and am a big fan. But, Parsons might find out just how hard wrestling training is, if it's not something he's done in a long time!

That link does not answer the question. JOhnson was a walkon at the time so he did not count. Parsons on the other hand is on scholarship.
If a scholarship athlete in another sport joins the football team he counts against their total.

right, but this is the opposite question. if a scholarship athlete from the football team joins another team, would he count as a full against the new team?

my intuition would be no since football doesn't give the option of partial scholarships but then why does rutgers just use their football scholarships to give wrestlers a full ride (since it's obviously not working for their football team)?

Know what was said, but seriously doubt Micah Parsons wants to roll around with anyone on the Penn State Wrestling team. Just doesn't make any sense. Upright, hand-fighting-only maybe. Better to take dance lessons for continued improvement of his footwork.

Parsons would not count against a wrestling scholarship. He's on football a football scholarship. If you are on a football scholarship, you can play any other sport and not count against the 2nd sport's scholarship total.

No, he would not...

15.5.9 Multisport Participants.
15.5.9.1 Football. [FBS/FCS] In football, a counter who was recruited (per Bylaw 15.02.9) and/or offered
financial aid to participate in football and who participates (practices or competes) in football and one or more sports (including basketball) shall be counted in football. A counter who was not recruited (per Bylaw 15.02.9) and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who competes in football and one or more sports (including basketball) shall be counted in football.

15.5.9.7 Other Sports. Except as otherwise provided in this section, a counter who participates in two or more sports shall be counted in one of the sports but shall not be counted in the others.

LOL at the Rutgers cheap shot, but actually the reverse is the concern. If Cael had given a dime to Johnson, it would've counted as a full ride against football.

Otherwise, imagine the number of 250-lb tennis players who could run a 4.4 40 in Tuscaloosa.

And that is exactly why they put the rule in place. Schools would give full ships in say T&F and then have the kids also play football and not count against the football ship limit.

His primary sport is football so that’s where the scholarship would count. I’m sure other fans might accuse this as another attempt to circumvent ncaa scholarship rules though.

The flaw with the rule is it does not work both ways.
The rule is the the scholarship counts the the students primary sport, I do not believe that whether a sport is revenue generating or not plays into the decision. You may have to participate in the primary sport before participating in a secondary sport, but that is just a hunch.

The rule is: if the student receives any athletic scholarship money, and he plays football, the scholarship counts as a full football scholarship. It's been that way for a very long time.

It is an interesting remark but there is no way this happens. With the overlap of seasons there is no way that either team is willing to have someone on the roster that isn't dedicated to the team. He quit wrestling years ago so he isn't dedicated to the sport and he isn't the once in a lifetime 2 sport mega talent that someone like Bo Jackson was where one team is willing to wait till you finish the other season because you are just that good.

For a football player that seems to have a reasonable shot at a million dollar NFL payday in the future it isn't worth the risk.

The only way this even comes close to happening is if they arrange a visit to the wrestling room to do some very low risk drills and practice with Bo Nickal in order to have the media do a story on it but even that is a long shot.
