Basketball Micah Shrewsberry answers questions about his future

Four days old but stilll very relevant with GU and ND coach discussion.

It’s pretty much the same answer he gave a few days ago in the big ten tournament.

At that time, everyone focused on the “Nobody wanted me a few years ago. I’m happy to be here. I love our guys.”

However, the full answer was-
“The basketball season is still going on. I’m completely tunnel vision on our team…… that’s all I’m focused on. I’m happy to be here, right? Nobody wanted me a few years ago. I’m happy to be here. I love our guys”.

The first sentence was the kicker. It did raise the question- what would be the answer when the season was over?

The fact he twice said no one wanted me a few years ago is a good sign. Means he appreciates Penn State having given him a shot when no one else would. That usually generates considerable loyalty.

I agree. Clearly he’ll listen to other offers, (we all would), but that doesn’t mean he will take them.

I think there will be some loyalty to PSU who gave him his first break but it all depends on what other schools are offering and if his family wants to move back to Indiana, (ND).

The more important thing is that PSU's AD was quoted a few days ago as indicating that we planned on keeping him, and seemed to imply that PSU would be an overall better deal for Coach Shrew (not just coaches pay, but assistant pay, facilities, support, and that some improvements are already underway) that other places would offer.

Also, do I mis-remember or wasn't there a big endowment given to PSU specifically for men's hoops a year or two ago. My guess is that PSU isn't going to let Coach walk without a fight, now that we are more sure that we have the right guy here.

Money talks. If he can get more millions he will be gone and who could blame him. Hope he stays but it's always about the money no matter what they say.

Can someone explain college coach's contracts? Why would a school guarantee the money on their end but let a coach opt out for a better offer?

If there is a buyout, the school doing the hiring has to pay money to the one that they are taking a coach away from.

Keep an eye on ND. Supposedly they're close to making an offer.
weirdly Mike Brey says he is not done coaching and they have not been able to announce a replacement in two months. Wondering if they actually fired Brey and tried to make it look like he retired..

One of their targets was Holtman from OSU and he now says no, he isn't going to ND. that may leave Micah as their current top target in which case PSU had better renegotiate the contract he has. sounds like coaches at Drake and Colgate are also on their list

There was a call yesterday afternoon involving members the Board of Trustees regarding an increased contract for Shrewsberry and other program improvements. Anyone's guess at this point if he will agree to it.
good to hear. that sounds like we have an AD who is taking some action.

if we can shed our reputation of paying worse than anyone in the entire league that also bodes well for hiring coaches in the future

Data that I saw showed that the athletic dept had 3.3 million in salary and benefits for the staff last year. Way too low to compete in the Big. Not sure exactly but rumor is he makes about 2 million of that amount. As I mentioned before, their budget should go up at least 2 million, if that means close to a Mill for him and a mill for his staff that sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

With the Big 10 Re-allginment and new TV Contracts for Football, are there any upcoming TV deals that will also help with basketball?

just bring him up to the average for the big ten. i think that alone would give him more than a 50% raise. underpaying people is a bad idea unless you want them looking for a new job all the time

Thank goodness for Franklin. Dragging PSU football into the modern era despite the kicking and screaming from some. Positioning us for the future no matter who the coach happens to be. What a terrible guy.

The only issue any RATIONAL person would have with Franklin is he hasn't won a playoff yet.

Those who cried about his deal last year would still be whining about the money if he negotiated this off season.

Holtmann had a terrific FR class this year and an even better one coming in next year. He's not about to leave, Unfortunately, the upper classmen at OSU this year just flat out sucked with the exception of Zed Key who was lost for the rest of the year with an injury

could be.

they were not good this year after being picked 5th preseason

he might not be that good
saying you aren't going there can also mean they turned you down

Translation: “I will start negotiating a better deal for me and my assistants, plus get money for better facilities, after the NCAAs are over. Now I have a game to play….hopefully many games to play”.
We all pretend like this isn't true....but it is true

It is hard to imagine anyone leaving Happy Valley for the urban mess that is the DC area. I assume Kraft would not allow a tiny school like Georgetown out bid him.
Plus, Mary, Georgetown hasn't done anything great in quite a while. Granted, PSU hasn't either, but I'm saying Georgetown isn't the power they once were, and the Big East isn't the Mega-Conference it once was. I'd think PSU would be able to outbid them if they wanted to.

Now Notre Dame would be a more tempting offer, but again I think if PSU tries hard enough to keep him he will stay. He has shown he is the real deal as a coach, now PSU has to show they are committed to providing the resources necessary to build a hoops power.

A lot of people like large metros...

Happy Valley is great but having lived downtown in the heart in large cities for almost all of my 20's and 30's (NYC, Austin and now Chicago) I wouldn't trade any of those for the opportunity to have lived in State College beyond graduation. My wife and I are currently trying to figure out how to avoid leaving Chicago for the suburbs as we grow our family.

It all depends on personal preferences…I would be miserable living in a large city….never wanted to and was glad I avoided it.

You can stay in the city--probably will just need to send the kids to private school :)
Honestly, I could never live in a major city (suburbs all the way for me) but many people love it. All preferences and definitely a factor for someone like Shrewsberry.

Agreed. Which is why it shouldn't be hard to imagine someone leaving State College for a metro like DC. Unless you think everyone loves small town life.

As a teenager, I visited my older brother who was attending Penn State. I immediately fell in love with the fact that nearly a whole town was on two one-way streets. I made up my mind that day and studied hard to get to accepted at Main freshman year. It's expanded and grown way, way up since those days. But, I am still enamored by it's quaintness. I will take a State College any day.

He coached with the Boston Celtics for eight years. Bet he got a lot of big city living there.

Who knows? Maybe he loved it in big cities. Maybe he now loves Small Town, USA. Maybe he likes the idea of his kid going to a university that is very safe with fewer negative distractions and temptations……not to say there are none of those in SC. Just less and easier to manage.

People change as they go through life. Tastes change, priorities change.

Stay calm.

Time will tell.
