Most popular song in America each year 1940-2016

Hard to believe Mariah Carey might have more selections than anyone else. I counted three, not sure anyone had more. That's sad.

Based on the artists' location, it looks like Liverpool had the most most popular songs with 4. Runner up looks like a tie between Mariah Carey's birthplace and surprise entry Schuylkill County with the Dorseys and Les Brown.:D

"Ghost Riders in the Sky" for me, which probably explains why I only recognize seven songs after 1988.

Tossin' and Turnin' by Bobby Lewis for me. One hit wonder featured in Animal House which coincidentally came out in my senior year of high school.

Figure most posters are born in this span. See what the most popular song in America was in the year you were born

Couple of things stood out for me on this clip.

Good to see Les Paul in there twice. And despite the popularity of Thriller -no Michael Jackson song. At least
not according to this list.
Glenn Miller.

Apparently beginning in 1988 I lost touch with pop culture. Oddly, that is the same year my son was born.

Thanks...awesome. random observations:
  • Surprised how few were made about love, many are comical.
  • 1940, odd "I'll never smile again" before, arguably, the worst time in human history
  • 1946, Black Group, the Ink Spots
  • 1946, Hispanic song minuana. Several hispanic songs in that era...who'd have guessed?
  • Elvis with three in a row, before my time but impressive
  • first hard rock song 1965
  • Oddly followed by Green Beret song in 1966
  • 1970, Monkey's I am Believer....song made for TV
  • Some songs you don't hear much anymore: JJ's miss you much (I've always thought she was under rated)
  • Whitney...best pipes ever?
  • Surprised at Candle in the Wind...remake from an earlier version...associated with Princes Diana's death
  • Honestly, lost interest after that.

Thank God for Elvis, because the music really sucked before him.

makes you wonder if the Billboard charts have ever been capable of accurately measuring the most popular song.

Rhianna appears more often than the Beatles

How were these determined? Most weeks #1 on Billboard charts?

I liked it until the turn of the century when 50 cent, Usher, etc. made the list.

In the early 2000s when Santana was #1 two years in a row - I remember that. It wasn't because those songs were particularly great. It was because there was literally nothing else. The late 90s and early 00s were the lost years of pop music in this country.

But the Beatles had multiple #1's in the same year so only one could be the most popular.
