Mt Rushmore of Penn a State Football

er: 2006"]Must put Mike Reid right in the middle....solid rock![/QUOTE]
Absolutely agree on Reid. I'd take him ahead of Poz. It's hard to argue with Jack, and as much as I love Franco, we've had better running backs. Still, because of his courage in standing up for Joe, I'd put him up there. I'm still thinking about LaVar. We've had so many good ones and my mind is a big foggy from too much eggnog. :)

Players only so excludes Joe Pa.
Lavar Arrington, Paul Posluszny, Jack Ham and Franco Harris. Thoughts?
Reid, Ham, Warner, Cappy. Blackledge has to be a consideration with being the QB for the first national title team.

Reid is no brainer. I love Franco, but Cappy or Curt Warner were better at PSU

Right Norm. Curt contributed to the first PSU MNC, but Cappy continued the process of putting PSU on the map of big time football by winning the Heisman...

A discussion like this is best started with a list of say 20 to 25 candidates and then whittling it down.

  1. Cappy
  2. Reid
  3. Poz
  4. LA
  5. Franco
  6. Richie Lucas
  7. Rosie Grier
  8. Lenny Moore
  9. Ted Kwalick
  10. Dave Robinson
  11. Dennis Onkotz
  12. Lydell Mitchell
  13. Keith Dorney
  14. Jack Ham
  15. Bruce Clark
  16. Mike Hartenstine
  17. Curt Warner
  18. Mike Munchak
  19. Mark Robinson
  20. Kerry Collins
  21. Bobby Engram
  22. Jeff Hartings
  23. Courtney Brown
  24. Derrick Williams
  25. Sean Lee
And I probably would have to make room to consider Michael Mauti, as he was the "captain" of keeping our team together against the sanctions and sellout of the program by the BOT, the B10 and ESPN.

I personnally could not nominate a player that left early for the NFL. I know that the game and economics of a football career are different today than what they were a while back, but a true rock of PSU football would play their whole career at PSU. That would eliminate ARob and LA from my final list.

First, let me say that I hope you all had a great day with family and loved ones.

Second, selecting the top 4 Penn State players over a span of about 70 years is akin to choosing the best RHH or the best right fielder of all time.

The list basically becomes an age issue. "Oldies" like me might list guys like Lenny Moore, Mike Reid, Dennis Onkotz, and Curt Warner. Younger alums.fans are swayed to name LaVar Arrington, Paul Pozlusny, Ki-Jana Carter, and Mike Robinson,

Heck, those 8 guys alone require a 2nd mountain.

Finally, if I were to be on the imaginary committee to select the actual individuals for the honor, I would request specific criteria so that we know whether to include NFL performance in addition to PSU play. Without the NFL, Dennis Onklotz would trump all other linebackers, especially when you add in his amazing stats as a punt returner.
Franco was more a factor as a sophomore than as a senior at Penn State, but his NFL career was clearly better than Lydell's. Or should we also take into account off-the-field greatness?

Sorry for a long post. Christmas is a tough time of year for me, and I guess I'm in need of a little football discussion to help out.

Without apologies to Felli, may God's blessing be with you all in the coming year.asd

No Riverboat Richie? Guess there was no football in happy valley before Paterno.

Your first Maxwell Award winning player, Heisman runner up. Didn't play for Joe, so no consideration. He should at least be on your list of 25.

Lydell Mitchell was a better college player than Franco. So it's Mike Reid , Jack Ham , John Cappaletti, Lydell Mitchell.

Lavar Arrington

Lavar isn't even in the top 4 linebackers at Penn State... Maybe in the top ten, I guess. He was spectacular physically, but no where near the disciplined team player that are the bedrock of Penn State's Linebacker U tradition.

Almost all who bought into Success with Honor. The list is too long. They are the true spirit of Penn State, all of them in unison is Mt Rushmore of Penn State Football.

Indeed, some of them like Franco should be lauded for their leadership.

Mike Mauti should be there IMO. It took a lot of courage for a kid to stand up in front of the national media and tell Mark Emmert to F off. That moment was a critical turning point in PSU football history.

I agree that you should include Mauti....He held the whole thing together or we may be in REAL trouble right now. He stood in the face of all the EVIL b@#$%ards that try to destroy the program.
