Driving into work this morning, I was thinking about the upcoming football season and the kind of season I think we might see from our Nittany Lions, or certainly hope to see.

This is the first post-Hack, post-sanction season that Penn State will have, where some big time players leaving the program will need to be replaced. Didn't really have that situation last year, except for one or two guys. I know some of you are concerned about this and I won't push back very hard against those concerns. They are legit, BUT I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

2018 is the year where Penn State can put to rest all concerns about whether the program is back to playing on an elite level, year in and year out, exactly because we lose a number of key players. I think this squad is superbly talented. I think it is also superbly coached. I think this is the year where we will do some things that the likes of OSU and Bama and Oklahoma do, that is, replace guys we've lost with new very talented players. I believe we will see guys like Sanders, Brown, maybe Slade, breakout as stars at RB. Why? Because I know they have talent and ability and are just waiting their chance. This is true at many positions on both offense and defense.

We also will have a great senior leader at QB in Trace McSorley and that should not be underestimated. I saw yesterday that he's second in the Heisman running per Vegas oddsmakers in 2018. Trace is a big time player folks. Big time. Let no one ever underestimate him again.

I think we'll see some true freshmen and redshirt freshmen become stars. Hippenhammer, Hamler, Brown, Slade, just to name a few offensive guys. We bring back what should be a very good, experienced o-line that I believe we saw beginning to blossom in the Fiesta Bowl. We will have more depth at nearly every position than we've had in many years. We will be playing almost every tough game at home where we haven't lost in two years. 14 straight home wins! Don't know if you guys have noticed, but pay attention. It's tough to win on the road and most of the good teams have to beat us on our turf if they are to do so. Fantastic stuff! Michigan on the road is only real road test.

I think this is the year where Franklin shows that PSU, under his watch, will not have any major hiccup years. He will show that he can replace assistants who leave for other jobs and not miss a beat. I think Rahne will show himself to be an excellent offensive coordinator. Fiesta Bowl was a fine prelude for him.

I think this is the year where Penn State football will show that not only can it reload, but that it can do so and still play with anyone.

If Penn State takes down the Buckeyes in Beaver Stadium on Sept. 29, this team and program will take off like a rocket and have a year for the ages, with many more to follow, proving once and for all that the Penn State football program is once again elite (not that I ever doubted its bona fides).

What an opportunity lies before this program!!!

An excellent read, Howie......
Do you do sermons on Sunday? ;)

Great stuff. I would like you to pump me up a little more about the LBs and Ss now.

I too am looking forward to this fall. Last year's team was dominated by Barkley. He was the star and played like it. We will miss him.
What excites me about this fall's team is that it will be more like a typical Paterno team. Solid players at every position and good depth. Look for the star of the game this fall to change from game to game. One game it will be Johnson. The next Sanders. Maybe Shorter will be the star some games. The team will be less predictable. I'm sure some of the freshmen will come out of nowhere and pleasantly surprise us.
I really think next season will be more fun and exciting for the fans than this season was.

Nice post. I hope you are correct.

PSU had the best RB in the nation and in our school's history the last two years. That will not be the case in 2018. We also lose a lot of good talent on both sides of the ball. Having said that, we have the best QB in the B1G and awesome set of skill players from RB through WR. We have the best OL we've had since Paterno was on the sidelines. Defensively, we have a lot of young talent that needs to prove itself.

Will be an interesting year. Was PSU having that once-in-a-decade team or is our top 20 presence sustainable like tOSU's and Oklahoma's? 2018 will be a pivotal year.

I guess twice in a decade, since they also won 11 games (and the B1G) the year before. :) Baseline for 2018 is same very good year as the past two with upside to CFP and making noise there.

yeah...can we sustain it in the post #26 era (et all). The recruiting has been there. We also lost JoeMo. The point is, can we sustain and not have to rebuild. I guess they say "reload, not rebuild". CJF has brought the program a long way. Are we able to take that "reload" step like tOSU? I think so...I hope so.

Good stuff. I love your optimism. Not to be nit picky, but I think you’re overestimating people’s underestimation of trace. I may be wrong but winning 3 VA HS state championships as a 4-year starter, and in two CFB seasons as a starter winning the B1G champ, the fiesta bowl, almost winning the rose bowl in dramatic fashion, being named all B1G and on the Heisman watch list for 17 and 18, and currently holding 7 PSU records probably has few truly underestimating Trace.

You're right. Most of the negative stuff I see about Trace comes from our own message boards. But overall, you're right.

And one poster at that, who probably didn't get his mini football signed by Trace during Blue White day.

Fair enough. But to anyone around here shooting negatives at trace (except for the home run celebration—since I spoke out on it), wake up. He’s among the best since Kerry Collins. Not crowning him yet, but he belongs in the discussion.

For sure he's one of Penn State's top 4 QBs of the last 50 years. In that time period my list would be Kerry Collins, Trace McSorley, Chuck Fusina, and either Michael Robinson or John Hufnagel.

That deserves a thread unto itself.

50 years is tough for me since I know I can’t be fair to guys who played before I could watch critically.

But clearly I’ll put Collins on top.
Since Collins graduated, I’d probably couple MRob and Trace, and Clark and McGloin to round out the top 5.

Fusina was the QB when I was in school and he was damn good. Different era so you can't compare stats.

I also accidentally wrote Mills. Brain cramp. Meant McGloin.

I began following in the 80s. My list is basically the same, but then I have to figure out where to put Blackledge and Hostetler (shame there's only one ball).

Here's an interesting article when thinking back on Hoss.

Defense will be the bigger challenge in 2018, although I think the pieces are being assembled for a better defense in a year or two than we have had in a while. Got to fill some big shoes at LB and safety in 2018. Less worried about DT because I think we have some serious talent building there. Stocked and stacked at DE and CB.

The OL is intact. There’s no replacing Barkley. We will have a rotation there. Gesicki is a huge loss in the passing game. I think we lose a lot of TE production this season, but maybe Johnson can assume some of this role. Hamilton is going to be a hard producer to replace. He was a guy who would pile up some huge numbers in a stealthy sort of way. May have to redesign the passing offense a bit to take advantage of our players who can create coverage gaps.

ST’s should perform well on coverage, but FG is an unknown. Just might have the best punter in CFB. Not sure who returns KO’s, maybe Journey. Thompkins for punts or maybe a new face - - Hamler, Hippenhammer, Dotson ?

Thompkins had a surprisingly solid year.....up until the bowl game. Not sure what he was doing vs Washington, but he sure made me nervous.

Yes, we do have one poster that seriously underrates Trace. I’m surprised he hasn’t spouted off his nonsense in this thread yet.

Good overall summary. Just a few responses:
not worried about the passing attack; yes, Hamilton was good, but PSU is loaded at WR; Shorter is a future star and should impact in a big way even in 2018; Gesicki is a loss, but might get better blocking from that position.

FG kicker -- unknown, but it was such an off-year for Davis, that there is likely to be improvement

defense -- take advantage of the talent at CB and utilize more man coverage; Reid and Castro-Fields are big time talents; D-Line is deep, should be able to generate a good pass rush

Schedule is difficult but favorable home games.

Lots of questions for me at LB. some might get answered partially in the spring game. The guys who redshirted are mysteries. I think JF is putting together what will be a dominant DL. If we have decent LB’s , that translates into a defense that can get pressure without having to blitz very often. Always a good thing.
I do think next year the defense could have a bumpy start, but defenses are usually ahead of offenses early and we have some easier games to break in the new guys.

Agree, but it gets serious in a hurry as the Buckeyes come in September 29.

It would bother me if the team takes a small step back especially at the start of the season. Other than Alabama most teams do after such player and coach turnover Even tosu
