My shaky grip on sanity

Two weeks from right now I will be in our parking spot in the red lot or whatever number it is now, drinking a Bloody Mary with my wife, hopefully my son, and friends. Occasionally looking up at the stadium and thinking whatever is a problem or wrong with the world can just go away for a bunch of hours. I don’t care that we are playing the Fighting Mr. Potato Heads or the Bellefonte Red Raiders. After what has seemed like a really long off season will be over.

I turned the big 60 a couple of months ago. You don’t know how many more of these I get so I will enjoy every second of it as I have done every fall since my first game in 1966. I had a coworker ask me what we plan to do in the fall and I said go to penn state games. He said oh, what else. I said nothing, it’s the only thing I have ever done on fall weekends my entire life. Its all I know.

I know many of you say you’d rather not go to the game, you're more comfortable in your family room near the fridge, etc. I feel sorry for you that you don’t appreciate the experience of game day. For my wife and I, a bad day at a penn State game is better than a good day most anywhere else.

Wherever you are, enjoy the season and whatever it may bring. I saw practice last week. This team will be good soon and great later. I’m just not sure how fast that will come.

This team is experienced depth away from being real good, real soon.

Am I able to take my daughter up to watch the team practice? Was wondering. Thanks

Wow - that’s one helluva condescending statement - that you feel sorry that we don’t appreciate the game day experience. Are you for real?

No consideration for folks who live hundreds of miles from the stadium? What about folks who can’t afford a whole season ticket package plus seat license, or premium parking in the shadow of the stadium? Or any of the hundreds of other reasons people may not be able to attend every game for decades on end.

You’re fortunate to be able to do so, but realize that many other folks appreciate the experience but the couch is the way they can enjoy the games. Stop looking down your nose at others.

Didn’t he say he felt sorry for people who choose to stay home? I didn’t take that as condescending at all.

He said that those that choose to stay home don’t appreciate the game day experience as much as he does apparently. That equates to basically saying that if you choose to not drive 10 hours to the stadium you don’t appreciate the experience. Thousands of folks appreciate the experience, probably more than he does b/c it’s old hat to him but it might be the one game a year or every 5 years that another fan can attend, but because they choose to not drive 10 hours each way he is looking down on them for making that “choice”.

Just came across as a real “Let them eat cake” kind of statement, especially combined with the humblebrag about parking in the red lot.

My 50 year old neighbor flys a Penn State flag in his front yard. He's got Penn State stickers on both vehicles he owns. He contributes $500.00 a year to the university. For 20 seasons he held season tickets. He tailgated nearly every game, and went to at least one away game a year. Three years ago he gave up his seats and decided to stay home and watch the games. He's been through the game day experience but, for various reasons, now prefers watching at home. I don't feel sorry for him. I feel sorry for you if you cannot appreciate that his choice is no less worthy than yours.

That was far from my intent. But take it anyway you want. By the way, I drive 400 miles each way so I fully understand the consideration. We feel very blessed and fortunate that we can do what we love and as I stated it can all be gone quickly. Enjoy the season.

I will be 75 on 9/9. I am a bigger fan than ever. You have plenty of years left. 75 is the new 55??

“Good soon and great later”

My guess is that it will be a slow start to the year for the offensive line and that will hamper the offense for awhile

Love this. As someone who lived too far away to enjoy for many years, I am jealous but I also am thankful for that wonderful rectangle in my living room and above bars that kept me connected to this wonderful culture and allowed me to feel so close while I lived so far away.

I don’t know how, but Penn State football has imprinted itself on who I am, and I am damn proud to not only be an alumnus but that I get to carry the banner to work everyday at Hershey.

Thanks to each of you for sharing in this awesome experience!

I guess if you’re looking to be offended by something you can be.

Very excited that College football is almost here. Next Saturday starts the beginning of 150 years since. And thanks to technology I can watch every game whenever and however I like. Record and watch later if I choose. Rewind a play, pause and start again in slow motion is an awesome feature. But it wasn’t always like that. I can remember back in the late 60s and 70s watching the only game on TV and praying for Penn State score. We had a radio station that provided game results for one hour starting at 6pm but someone had to call in, get through and ask specifically for a Penn State score. I never got through. If nothing, the 11:00 news always displayed all the college score. Can you image having to wait 7.5 hours just know if your team won or not.

You know, you’re looking pale. Are you feeling O.K.? I think you need to rest in front of the TV for an extended period.

Thank you doctor. I will share this professional medical advice with my wife and daughters and come up with a best course of action.

Emily consideration and stern consultation, I will be at an athletic activity of one of my daughters. Possibly at multiple activities for even suggesting otherwise.

Reminds me of Cameron’s father....

That sounds a lot like me.....Hi neighbor!

And would you mind cleaning up your yard a bit? It’s becoming an eyesore. Other neighbors are talking.....

seems like 3 years ago he decided not to MAKE SOME NOOOOIIIIIIIISE any longer

While I’ve been hitting away games like crazy... I haven’t been to beaver stadium since a guy named Paterno was head coach. Part of me likes it that way. With a busy family and work schedule, and just an amazing man-cave set up complete with a fridge full of high end craft beer... the journey to state college is getting tougher to make.

I’m glad the Coach and his family still enjoy the game day experience. Good for you. We should all be fortunate enough to find things we love to do.
I haven’t been to a home game since my youngest daughter graduated from PSU. I enjoyed those trips back in the day, but I now find the other things I can do on fall weekends while still enjoying the games on TV (on my own schedule) a better option for me.
So don’t feel sorry for me. A fall Saturday on the golf course, followed by a nice meal, followed by the recorded PSU game in the evening hours is a wonderful day for me and my wife.
Hope everyone enjoys the upcoming season!!!

At 60 you are young enjoy the games while you can. I'm 74 and don't get around well at all. I miss going to the games - rain sleet snow heat cold whatever the world could bring because no matter what else was going on in my life I had the games to fall back on.

Good for you cville you are a lucky guy. I love PSU football and am a PSU graduate. I am much happier spending my afternoon with my daughter watching the Cavaliers!

I can so relate to this...very well stated!
