NC St. has a tough road to hoe to be the #1 non-B10 team. They have two brutal duals this weekend against #8 VA Tech and #5 Missouri. Matchups for NCST vs. VT are below (didn't have time to do Mizzou match)

125 Fausz (NCST vs. Dance (VT)...Dance will be favored, possible bonus...0-3
133 Morris (NCST) vs. Gustafson (VT)...Morris favored...3-3
141 Jack (NCST) vs. Chisko (VT)...toss-up, Jack prob. slight favorite...6-3
149 Donahue (NCST) vs. Mastriani (VT)...toss-up, Donahue slight favorite....9-3
157 Gannt (NCST) vs. Braschetta (VT)...I'll go with a healthy Brashcetta...9-6
165 Rohskopf (NCST) vs. McFadden (VT)...Rohskopf favored...12-6
174 Hall (NCST) vs. Epperly (VT)...Epperly could bonus...12-10
184 Renda (NCST) vs. Zavatsky (VT)...Zavatsky slight favorite...12-13
197 Boykin (NCST) vs. Haught (VT)...toss-up, I'll go Haught...12-16
HWT Gwiz (NCST) vs. Walz (VT)...two undefeateds, I'll go with the Champ...15-16

VA Tech matches up well with the Wolfpack...this will be a really tight-contested dual.

I think the selection committee will want PSU vs. Ok. St. and Iowa vs. NCST ideally. They won't want a rematch in OKST vs. Iowa so any dual loss this weekend from NCST likely has the Cowboys coming to Rec Hall in my opinion.

I have no actual information, but it would not surprise me if Ok St opts out. Really no point in any of the teams to participate, but particularly the non big 10 schools. Traveling cross country Sunday after a home dual on Friday to claim a worthless title. Just doesn't make sense, need to focus on what matters.

Hey april...hearing rumblings about this too, your post validates others are hearing it as well. My understanding was that a consensus vote was taken at the NWCA Meeting before the season, and all were for this setup for one year. Interesting to see how this plays out.

In the breakdown above, what do you see differently that would change the outcome?
Gantt over Brascetta, really like the way Tommy is wrestling. And while I don't expect it, I wouldn't be completely shocked if Gwizz could major Walz. He's just on a different level

I would be shocked by that. Walz handled Coon pretty easily in the All Star Classic. Of course, that was very early in the season so maybe Coon hadn't adjusted to the weight cut yet. :D

133 - Gustafson
149 - Mastriani
184 - Personally I would go with Renda, but Zavatsky should be favored

Everything else I agree with.

That's the problem. They (OSU) wouldn't be claiming the title.

I truely believe this dual series will be a success this year. But the nwca has done a horrible horrible marketing it.

The wrestling boards contain some of the most informed fans and yet every board has posters daily going wtf ......

Unless the nwca doesn't want this to work cause it wasn't their idea and to be a thumb in the eye to those who came up with it....things that make you go hmmmm

Another possibility is the NWCA could not successfully market a million dollar give away. At no particular point in history does the NWCA ever appear to understand the concept of product marketing.

True, but a lot of boards are being dense. The concept is not exactly new. There's the football BCS. And hoops has run the Big East vs. ACC or Big Ten vs. ACC Challenge for how many decades now?

This much WTF, with the same questions asked and answered practically daily, means people don't want to know or are in denial. The marketers probably can't dynamite their way into those fans' heads. (Not that they've tried that.)

Who would be the preferred dual opponent? I would most like to see Iowa vs PSU, but since that is not within the realm or possibility I would vote for Mizzu.
125- Good match big advantage Nico
133- JC big favorite interesting style matchup
141- Great match
149- 2/nd best possible match you could hope for. Zain too much
157- Nothing for Nolf. Barnes tough but under sized here.
165- Interesting. Lewis is really tough. Cradle battle.
174- Great match.
184-Great match.
197-Great match. NCAA final preview perhaps
285- Perfect break in for NN.

Very entertaining match Mizzu would offer PSU or Iowa. 8 fun matches plus the other 2 feature Nolf who makes any match fun and NN who everyone can't wait to watch wrestle.

How/why would wrestling PSU not matter for OSU? What is the risk and what matters more?

Assuming the goal is to win the nat'l championship why not wrestle the toughest matches possible in prep for the NCAA tourney? I get the dual title has no value but it seems choosing not to wrestle a tough match goes against the essence of the wrestling mentality, IMO.

It would seem weak to opt out and unnatural given the role John Smith has played in trying to grow the sport.

Just my 2 cents

Like I said I have no information, But I could see them opting out. I haven't checked all schedules, but of the ones I have they are the only team that has a dual Friday night, they have already had the toughest schedule of anyone and they have guys banged up. I am probably wrong, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Yeah, I've heard whisperings about Ok. St. not being keen about doing this. I agree its tough to wrestle Friday and then travel to wrestle Penn State. Plus, they've already seen Penn State at the Scuffle. But, I think ultimately it would look bad if they were the one team to opt out. I guess it would just skip over them to the next team available?
