The NCAA is looking for ways to speed up college football games. A couple of the proposals are to keep the clock running after incompletions and after first downs. My biggest problem is they will shorten the game but add to the commercial time. Anyone that ever attends a non-televised game sees how much quicker they are finished, usually in under 3 hours.

Just curious to others thoughts as this will be a major change to the ' 2 minute drill'.

Good point. If they shorten the game enough there will be fewer commercial breaks. So the networks that spend huge amounts on these games, will want longer times for each break. They are too long already.

In the old days a turnover or big score would cause have major momentum change. Now, each time one happens there is a three minute break for the coaches to talk to players and overcome the setup back. Also, gives coaches time to strategize the new realities on the field. And, of course, long breaks allow tired players to rest up late in games.

These have certainly changed the game.

I don’t like TOs after a first down. The OOB works as it adds a level of strategy. This closes down the middle of the field and gives the defense a chance to defend.

It aligns with the pro game.

I also like the rose bowl where a guy ran into the field with a sign telling you how much time was left on the TO. The beaver has this but it is hard to find.

Only the NCAA would think of this.

Nothing like tampering with the game because you won’t address the obvious. The games are long because of the ridiculous amount of commercials.

Nothing like a team scoring…..then go to commercials. Then we return for the kickoff….. and go again to commercials. Then return to a few plays…… and off to commercials again.

Stop trying to fix something that isn’t broken. Cut back on the tv commercial breaks.

And while the NCAA is at it, can we do something about refs reviewing plays that take 20 minutes to come to a decision?

Everyone at home has seen the replay 2-3 times and knows what the decision should be before the ref on the field even announces the play is under review. Then we have to wait while Mr Magoo trots over to the sideline to look on his 6 inch screen and debate forever on what to do. ;)

The networks have 3 to 31/2 hours to fill. You know very well that if it isn’t actual playing time it’s going to be commercials. Especially promos for the next commercial filled game that follows.

This. I'm against anything that results in less actual game time (plays occurring on the field) because it just gets replaced with more commercials to fill the available time.

I'd prefer shorter and fewer TV commercial breaks. To offset that, perhaps more "during the broadcast" advertisements - stuff next to the scorebug or even the announcers hawking a product. Do stuff that doesn't hurt the in the stands enjoyment of the game.

The reviews of every little thing, along with the incessant commercials, is what really has increased the time of games. Last season, Pitt's lunkhead coach was complaining about the length of games because their first several games were lasting almost 4 hours, and I believe that he attributed a lot of that to the reviews. For once, he was right.

While they are at it on this quest to shorten game times, please instruct ESPN, CBS, etc that when a game is scheduled for a 7:30pm kickoff they should kickoff at like 7:35.

Now it’s like 20- 25 minutes of Herbstreit et al droning on about nonsense until we actually get the start of the 7:30 game at around 7:50 or so.

My whole complaint about the pregame is that they almost never show any of the band's pregame show, which is part of what makes college football more special than the NFL, but will spend a lot of time showing highlights that already have been shown numerous times that day and talking about the upcoming game longer than necessary. I mean, if you're broadcasting an OSU game, why not show Script Ohio rather than talking heads and highlights?

Spot on, my friend...spot on. Frequent, lengthy commercials are the price CFB pays for the gazillions of dollars it gets from TV/streaming. OTOH, the standard for reversing a call is (or used to be) clear, incontrovertible evidence that it was wrong. Otherwise it stands. How many rewinds does it take to make that determination? Maybe the "Magoos" like being on TV?

I think there are too many plays in an NCAA game where teams employ hurry up offenses. More plays equal more injuries. They need a minimum amount of time in between plays.

Exactly! Show what makes a day at Ohio Stadium or the Beav or wherever interesting.

I was at a PSU vs OSU game years ago and the place was loud and crazy. When I watched the tv replay later you had no idea how loud it was or the craziness (in a good way) in the stands. They just dialed down the volume and spent more time making sure Herby and the field reporter got their promos in but never really showed what was going on. Show what makes college so much better than nfl football.

Yes, but what about the jobs that people like Witovet have explaining to us that toe heel = OOB except for very, very special cases. I mean seriously, does Dean Blandino et al have the easiest job in the world.

Here is how soccer is addressing advertising in a game with no stoppages. Seems like there should be some sort of technology solution to the NCAAs challenge.

Agree completely. The pregame pageantry is what makes college football. Yet they are insistent on showing the talking heads rehashing the keys to the game for the 100th time.

Shorten halftime to 15 minutes like the NFL has. Maybe then we wouldn't have to listen to "a little bit louder now, a little bit louder now" any more.
