I was going to post this in another thread, but thought it deserved it's own. NCAA supported proposal for D1 Women's Wrestling to gain emerging sport status. This is really good news for wrestling. Would give more women the opportunity to compete and could potentially have a positive impact on the amount of scholarships allotted for Men's Wrestling.

Also supported for emerging sport status is Women's Acrobatics and Women's Tumbling.

Other current sports, is a new sport including additional scholarships or is it a balance, give some here by removing some there? I don't know or completely understand how it works, therefore the question.
Hey that's a really good question. So women's emerging sports are given 10 years to show steady progress towards acheiving NCAA Championship status (For D1 that's a minimum of 40 varsity teams). If the sport doesn't show progress in that time it can be removed, however the NCAA has been pretty lenient with this in order to maintain membership minimum sports-sponsorship requirements. With that said, it's possible that they could do away with an emerging sport like Women's Rugby, (classified as an emerging sport since 2002 and still only just 52.5% to acheiving championship status) but it doesn't mean they will or have to remove it. So to answer your question, failing or declining women's emerging sports would be the only potential casualties, although it's not required that they remove any programs in order to add new emerging sports. I hope that answered your question.

Thank you for the thorough answer. I thought originally when Title IX began there were losses in men's scholarships which transferred to women's the new women's sports teams. This clarifies the question's basis. While I suspected current ships were not impacted one never knows given the NCAA's capricious judgments and decrees.
