Nearly 9-in-10 whacked by economy, sparking Trump surge, Biden fail

Nearly nine-of-10 Americans feel “impacted” by the Biden economy, socked by “inflation and higher prices,” and most fear it is going to get worse.

In a new monthly McLaughlin & Associates survey, likely voters said that the country is on the wrong track, a trend that began last summer and has widened to a 39-point gap. Some 65% said America is on the wrong track to just 26% who said “right track.” The gap is widest among independent and Trump voters.

The crush of the economy’s failings appears to be cutting deeply into President Joe Biden’s approval ratings, and helping to give former President Donald Trump a resurgence in popularity.

According to the survey, Biden’s approval is just 43%, though that’s better than the 38% in another survey out today from the Associated Press. The McLaughlin poll has never had Biden that low.

It also showed Trump on the rise, as have several other surveys. In a potential 2024 matchup, Trump leads Biden 48%-43%, according to the survey that gives equal weight to Democrats and Republicans at 36%, and independents at 28%.

The survey showed strong support for Trump among Republicans. Some 74% support Trump’s bid for the GOP nomination, said McLaughlin.

And 61% of Republicans want him to run again, among his highest numbers yet with the GOP which may recall that the economy was soaring under Trump before the coronavirus hit and then began to come back around the 2020 election.
