Andy Ruiz Jr. stuns Anthony Joshua in huge upset to win heavyweight titles

NEW YORK (AP) — Andy Ruiz Jr. had six weeks to prepare for the fight of his life.

He’ll have a lifetime to celebrate one of boxing’s biggest heavyweight stunners.

A massive underdog just like Buster Douglas, Ruiz knocked down British champion Anthony Joshua four times, and the final two in the seventh round proved the decisive blows.

Ruiz, the first boxer of Mexican descent to win a heavyweight title, capped one of boxing’s epic upsets to win Joshua’s shares of the heavyweight championship Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

"I just feel so good, man," Ruiz said. "This is what I’ve been dreaming about, this is what I’ve been working hard for. I can’t believe I just made my dreams come true."

What has happened to boxing? What a joke, he must have a glass jaw to lose to that guy. Why I watch the UFC

Joshua let the shorter guy inside, big mistake when you have an 8 inch reach advantage.

There has been one great British Heavyweight in the modern era of boxing. There is a reason Joshua’s people kept him in the UK and were reluctant to fight anywhere else. He has no chin and he really can’t box either. He has power in his right hand and that is about it. Joshua made his name because he beat a faded Wladimir Klitschko. In his prime Klitschko would have murdered him.

Joshua probably had an immediate rematch clause in the contract in order for Ruiz to even get in the ring. I would assume Joshua will win the title back. If he ever gets into the ring with Deontay Wilder he will get murdered. Would be surprised if Joshua’s handlers even allowed it to happen.

That was great to watch. Thanks for linking it. Ruiz has some fast hands. Seemed like he was getting 3 or 4 punches off before Joshua even knew it. I’d watch a rematch if I knew when it was going to be. I have a fondness for little fat guys.

The heavyweight division has always had bigger and somewhat fatter fighters. If you watch some fights from the 1970’s you’ll see a lot of heavyweights that are carrying extra weight with some being pretty fat. It appears, however, to have gotten worse. Now guys who look downright obese are fighting as heavyweights. I blame our modern diets (people are much bigger in general than say the 1970’s) and the fact that many of today’s best athletes don’t box.

The best boxing has always been at middleweight and welterweight - even in the days of Ali, Foreman, and Frazier. While it’s possible for big ungainly guys to be athletic, once you get over a certain height and weight you are going to lose some speed and agility. This is probably why you never see 6’ 200 plus pound gymnasts.

We also have to remember that the “looks/eye test” has little to do with a person’s fighting ability. Being cut doesn’t mean one is automatically a good fighter. Fighting (boxing, MMA) is about so much more than physique. Also let’s not forget that fat guys can be in shape (sounds oxymoronic, I know) and be agile and fast (for their size) and quite strong. I think we’ve all fallen victim to the Hollywood buff hero myth and tend to think that if a person isn’t buff they couldn’t possibly be a good athlete, and that’s simply not true.

Speaking of fat athletes: Just be glad football isn’t played shirtless.

He beat the corpse of Klitschko, then looked average in his next few fights. Too bad we won’t get the Wilder fight for a while if at all, Wilder would wreck him. So would Fury, for that matter.

Your personal feelings on boxing and UFC are of course valid. But you're commenting on a fight you obviously didn't watch. Despite appearances, the guy has a good chin, fast hands, and a heavy punch. Sometimes that's all it takes at heavyweight. I'm not into all the "mounting" going on in UFC. To each his own.

This is the top of the heavyweight division now? Geez, how times have changed. Both these guys look like lousy boxers. Even the guy that is a good physical specimen can't box, not that I'm an expert, but I usually know lousy boxing when I see it.

How can you have an eight inch reach over a guy and not have throwing a lot of jabs be a large part of your strategy? And the guy that won didn't like ht was throwing devastating punches but rather it's like someone else says, the other guy had a glass jaw. This almost looks like two drunk guys duking it out in the parking lot outside a bar.

ETA: Okay, I just watched it again and two drunks outside a bar is an exaggeration but they don't look all that skilled.

Looked the ref did everything he could to help the champ. Took a lot of time after each knockdown to get back to boxing...giving the guy a lot of time to recover. Ruiz sure had a killer instinct, going after it when he sensed he did some damage.

Outside of the 1970’s and the Tyson era, where often times he didn’t have real great competition, the heavyweight division is a crap shoot. Not too many men of that size are all that athletic to begin with and of those that are not many box. Welter and middleweights are where you get the best combination of speed, agility, and power. Some of boxing’s best bouts come from those weight classes.

We were very lucky to have a lot of really good heavyweights during Ali's era- Liston, Frazier, Norton, Shavers, Foreman all come to mind as guys who would have been good in any era.

Who is the ine great heavyweight? I am trying to think but I am not able to come up with him.

Too bad, I really wanted to see Wilder KO this chump. Oh well, butterbean got to him first

I met Ernie Shavers riding the "Deuce" in Vegas a few years ago. He seemed very nice and was willing to talk. He was in town for a Pacquiao fight. It was easy to see why he was such a big puncher. His hands are like catchers mitts. I wear XXL gloves and his hands dwarfed mine.

This is a great day! I am officially in better shape than the heavyweight champion of the world!! (He could beat my ass, of course - but facts do not matter if your morals are in the right place).

I never understood why a champion would defend against someone on short notice. Yes, they should be able to win, but boxing is such a strategy thing, you need to scout your opponent. One would assume Joshua figures he would show up and win

I always wonder too what goes through a more physically imposing contestant’s head when they are losing to someone who is not the same physics class as they are. The level of embarrassment must be through the roof. Seriously, how does this guy look his girlfriend/wife in the eye and not know that she can picture him getting his ass beat by some dude they pulled off the heap

This is why boxing endures, anything can heppen

I knew I’d seen this guy fight before.

Looks like Little Joe knows how to handle his business better than Joshua!!

Heavyweight Boxing is one of the only sports left where a dramatic underdog can win with just one lucky action.

They call it the puncher's chance. The chance is somewhat low, and far lower in lower weight classes, as there isn't as much power behind each punch.

At the heavyweight level, a powerful punch to the right spot will be lights out. In this case, it looks like it was quite close to the temple, probably causing swelling, almost certainly a concussion, and the champ's brain barely had any oxygen after. He's lucky to be alive.

Ruiz is like a bear. Bears are often stronger and quicker than they appear.
He also has a lot of loose hide, like a bear, so you don’t exactly know what you are hitting.

Lennox Lewis

Yep. He was one of the best all-time. Once
Emanuel Steward took over his training he was, in my opinion, the best pure boxer the heavyweight division ever saw. I know Ali, Ali, but Lewis was a huge man with a ram rod jab, great feet, unbelievable balance and he always had that devastating right hand. His chin was never elite, but when he was determined to box instead of slug he was nearly impossible to beat.

Ruiz’s looks are deceiving. I watched his last fight before this one against a taller fighter and thought he had no chance before it started. He won rather easily. He has fast hands for someone his size and has good power. He may not be an all time great in the division, but he is legit.

And ironically Lewis was stripped of his title by not fighting a guy named, wait for it .....

Ruiz.

For all of you keyboard warriors making fun of Mr. Ruiz, I'd love to see what he'd do to you in the ring. I was impressed with the highlights. He goes on for the kill!

I had never really watched Ruiz before but he is pretty athletic. He has good balance and his punches are compact. He keeps his chin tucked but he lowers his head right before he throws his lead right. If Joshua had any kind of jab he would have been able to nullify that right. An uppercut like Wilder’s would have left him on the floor. You never let a significantly smaller fighter close the gap easily, but Joshua let it happen over and over. Joshua has no left hook either. He almost pushes it. If I am in Wilder’s camp I would be offering to overpay Ruiz to get him in the ring. It would shock if me Ruiz would go the distance against Wilder.
