During the OSU match I noticed a family sitting in front of me that are not normally there so obviously they had gotten the tickets from the regulars. There was the Mom, Dad, daughter about mid 20's and I think her boyfriend. Well none of them knew a thing about the sport. The only thing they could yell was "get him" even when we started on the bottom. Thru the course of the match they would turn around and ask "what just happened". So I would explain things along the way.

As the match was winding down the Mom asked if it was always this intense. I commented that you normally get (2) duals that are that intense but it's not every dual. I said however within the dual there are many individual matchups that are extremely intense. At the end I asked if they enjoyed the match and they said "we have already texted our friends to see if they are using next weeks tickets" (which was the Iowa match). Needless to say they left big fans of the sport or at least PSU wrestling fans. I often wished I had more tickets to take some young wrestlers to a match to see the big stage - they would be hooked for life.

Was the boyfriend Asian? If he was, they sit behind me in Beaver Stadium. All I ever hear from the wife is "get him". Nice people, though.

Very cool story...and what a first match :)

If that was their first match, they probably will be disappointed the rest of the way. Lol
Indeed. Duals anyway. Best dual I've ever seen and even better when you knew the underlying drama with Nolf injured and Cassar going.

Reminds me of when I took my five FL-based nephews to their first hockey game a few years ago. Lightning beat the Canadiens 7-2 and the kids were up and dancing after every goal. Had the time of their lives and I became a legendary uncle. But of course none of them have the attention spans required to endure the 3-1 games that comprise most of hockey-watching.

Awesome story. We brought a Rec Hall first-timer to the match, though she's very knowledgeable about PSU wrestling. I've given a lot of thought to the whole, "We've ruined her for life."

Great story!!

Best I have is Mrs. Roar...from total disinterest, to somewhat interested, to going to duals and reading a book, to learning the scoring, to sitting through a dual without a book, to learning the scoring better, to attending a tournament (Keystone Classic), to screaming at the ref (just kidding), to going to NCAA's this year for the first time...all in the span of 34 years :):).

Doesn't sound promising to get Mrs Roar's ticket! Nevertheless it's encouraging. My wife is no where near going to NCAA's (even if I had tickets), but last year she did watch some of finals on ESPN while I was attending the NCAA's. That's a step at least!

There is a charity called "Wrestling for Life" that not only buys shoes for kids that need them to compete, but also provides tickets for youth to events. Might try them, although it might be tough to find extras for Rec Hall matches from what you all say. Maybe when Buffalo comes to town?

If there is one thing I can never see Mrs. Roar doing, it is yelling at a ref. Mrs. Pawrestlers, on the other hand. ..

Mrs. Hockeygod would string me up if I left her home.. Roar can attest... she is a "fan"atic to the fullest extent.. She is hitting her first B1Gs this year but nationals with Roar, Nova, Tikk, pa, and several others is a yearly event for the Hockeygod crew... Scrambling for tickets this year made it a bit of a near miss but I think we are good to go now..

A good friend of mine was reffing my sons match. Before the match, my wife apologized to our friends wife for things that her husband (me) might say in the heat of the moment. it was a joke but with a smig of truth in it :(;).

I was cool, as I didnt say a word. My wife not so much. When we got home and put the video up on the TV it had to be marked R for adult language.

makes me chuckle just typing this.....

Maybe another team of that level. I would be very surprised to see Buffalo on our sched as long as Cael is coach. Having Akins wrestle Mat Town on Saturday and FF 125 in Sunday’s dual doesn’t fly very far.

That is shytty, especially when Kuhn and Atkins should have been a very good matchup.

yeah, wasn't trying to be smart-ass (this time) just went with recent. But, I bet that given notice, Jim could hook up a club with some tickets

Envious of your annual tradition, jealous of your shared spousal interest, and impressed with the offline camaraderie of boardmates here. You’re a blessed man!

My GF does not like wrestling (her mom makes fun of it) although her mom was in town during the PIAA tournament last year and one of her students was in the finals. Her mom told the student if he made the finals she'd go see him. I gave them my two passes (I get free all-access passes) to the PIAA tournament so they could go see the kid win the state title.

So, you had a 34 year plan?

My wife watched NCAA finals last year, and cheered as loud as my son's and I. WE even went to 3 meets this year, Lehigh, OSU and Iowa. She said the OSU meet was the most exciting sports event she has ever been too, but she didn't lose her voice like I did, still just now getting it back almost three weeks later.

Here is a humourous story.

Back about 13 years ago my oldest was wrestling in Jr High Districts and won. A friend videoed his finals match for me since I was unable to work a camera. But, the best part was the bout before my son's, the friend didn't capture the actual match, instead he videoed the mom of one of the wrestlers. It was hilarious, she kept changing from hiding her eyes, to cheering, back and forth. I will have to dig that video out and watch it again!

My wife watched the PSU /tOSU dual with me on TV and she was squirming and writhing in her chair. That is the first time she has watched any college wrestling and now I keep her updated on D1 news. She also lets our youngest son practice moves on her that he needs to work on. She was extremely proud when he used a pancake in the middle school semi finals to beat a kid in the last 7 seconds. She said, "Hey that is the move he did on me". Now she calls it her move.
Maybe if PSU come to Illiniois nest year, she will go to the meet.

Good news for you. Based on the schedule rotation we will (or should) wrestle at Illinois next season. Get your tickets early. :D

Long time wrestling fan but kinda new Penn State fan. Knew DT when he lived in Wyoming and watched Cael as high school wrestler. Followed them to Penn State and have been hooked. Long time follower of this board and HR but first time poster. My sons wrestle and my daughter keeps stats. Mrs. IPSF had brothers that wrestled so she knows enough to be dangerous. Our date night is to catch a couple duals on FLO. Last year I took my sons and their club coach to St Louis. We were near the rafters but the atmosphere was electric. Got tickets to Cleveland in the worst seats in the house but at least they are in the house. Figured a Newbie post was as good of place to come out as any.

Let me be the first to give you a like and to congratulate you on coming out of the closet or locker room - whichever is appropriate for a new poster. :)

Welcome Idaho. We rode motorcycles through there last summer and were awed by the beauty. (You can have the winters though)

Can't remember if it was Idaho or Montana where we saw a sign for the "testacle Festival"

There are several testicle festivals around the area. Rocky Mountain Oysters as they are sometimes referred to. Been there, had them, give me a steak with shrimp as my surf and turf. ;)

LOL, welcome Idaho. Never had Rocky Mountain Oysters and no wish to try. I will stick with Steak and Shrimp along with you. :D

Always good to have new posters, welcome!....the new poster pledge class has added many good folks this season to the board.

Hahahahaha, man, do you sit in WJ for football? My brothers and I still laugh about the people we sat near when we were kids. I swear I remember that Cuse game from the 70s like it was yesterday--because the woman behind us said over and over and over: "There he is--get him!"

True story: Mrs. Pawrestlers has been the one being videotaped.

We lived outside of Memphis during our middle son's wrestling career, and the beginning of our youngest son's. Early in their career, the HS coach had a talk with Gray. He told him to ask his Mom to stop yelling so much, because Gray couldn't hear the coach's instructions.

Those reserved southern momma's had no idea how to take her.

No Rocky Mountain oysters for me, but I did have lamb fries in OKC once a few years ago.

Welcome Idaho, I visit Boise occasionally for work, want to bring my fly rod next time I go!

Better than expected does not equal good. I will admit that they were certainly better than some of the things Mrs. Idaho's family have foisted upon me.
Truth be known, I was tricked :(. Sitting in an Amarillo, TX dive with a fellow workmate, and he said there was a menu choice I should try. Said I was game (never shied away from anything new, food-wise, until I tasted it), and that was that. Not horrible, not great, just happy to have had the experience.
