Next Year

Using history as a guide.

Let's assume 125, 33 and 49 are Teske, RBY and Berge. 3 truly highly talented freshmen wrestling in Penn State's starting lineup being coached up and prepared daily by the staff in that wrestling room. Based upon history don't you feel a certain amount of confidence that those three will progress dramatically through the season and be prepared entering next season's post season?

I’d agree, just saying I think we should just enjoy their development and not slot in a placement just yet . Can’t wait to watch em grow

Is that confirmed?

I think it's pretty well confirmed at this point. That's not to say that Cael and company couldn't get him to change his mind and I honestly hope that they do. It would give PSU a chance to redshirt Lee if they chose to and give Cortez another shot at his dreams. As for Lee moving up, you never know when one of these kids will hit a growth spurt, but Lee's what, 19 now? Honestly I don't think he's a big 141 and think he could easily make 141 again. I'd rather see Lee at 41 and Berge/Verk at 49 than to see a question mark at 141 and Lee at 149. That's just me and it makes little sense to sweat this stuff now anyway.

Who are potential one year transfers that could come in to man 125, 133 or 141 (so Lee can reshirt). If they can get 1 year transfers , would be wise to redshirt them all

Unless RBY is killing it at 133

In general I don't care for the one year transfer idea. It's one thing if you can get someone of the caliber of McKenna or when you're truly behind the 8-ball and have no other choice, as with Kuhn this year, but we'll have several options at 125 and 133 next year and I'd prefer to see them take advantage of guys that are already in the room or the incoming freshmen given that they're already all at a fairly high level. Some will point out that Teasdale, Teske and RBY haven't wrestled a single college match between them yet, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see their experience and background, nor does it take a leap of faith to presume that they'd likely be qualifiers and contributors next year. Just my opinion of course and not worth much.

Taking a slightly different 2 year look at the lighter weights:
18/19:
125 Teske
133 Teasdale
141 RBY (dude looks too skinny to stay at 133)
149 Berge or Verk
RS N Lee
19/20
125 Teske
133 Teasdale
141 RBY
149 N Lee
157 Berge takes over for Jason
I think in a 3 day event our guys look better day 2 without the hellacious cut some of our opponents make. I like the idea of growing into a weight.

Was just perusing the Ohiowrestling site, which has a few posters that are pretty tied in to the tOSU program. One of these posters strongly suggested that Micah Jordan would be at 149 next season. That suggests that Ryan intends to implement the large-scale tan shirt plan, likely with Pletcher, McKenna, Martin, and perhaps Campbell.

Supposedly Jordan's "natural" weight class is 149, plus it would get him away from Nolf and Retherford will be gone. In this scenario I would guess that Hayes would go back down to 141, where he and McKenna wrestled off this season for the privilege of avoiding Retherford.

No way Jordan makes 149! The Bucks, for the most part, looked bigger than their weights. PSU guys never do. They look spot on or undersized. And they aren’t “buffed”. They just look fresher as the tournament wears on. The HR cry of steroids is hysterical. They are one of the least chiseled squads out there.

I realize Okie State had a horrible tourney but I see them as our biggest challenge next year with Fix and JoJo coming back along with some great wrestlers that underperformed this year.

PIcc
Fix
Brock
Boo
JoJo
Rodgers
Smith

That’s 7 good guys off top of my head. Not sure if Weigel or White are seniors

Plus the have Wittlake coming in and Kirklevet if they wanted to throw them in as true frosh?
The only senior they have on the entire roster is Heil. Also, I expect Kaden Gfeller to crack the lineup as well. You guys not-so-fondly remember him as the guy that stuck Nick Lee in the final of the Southern Scuffle.

He has made 141 before. I saw him at Princeton and he certainly wasn't the biggest 157 at all. I'm not saying he will or he even should, but it certainly is not out of the question.

Iowa should be pretty stout next year, but we all know there is always at least one other program other than Penn State better than the Hawkeyes. If the Nature Nuts are going to redshirt across the board preparing for a 2020 run then it makes sense the CowPokes take their turn collecting the runner-up trophy.

Tommy says he will never get use to third place, but the smiles the Hawks had on their faces collecting the third place trophy tells me they have already reached the point they view it as an accomplishment. Iowa will be fine finishing behind the Nits and CowPokes.

@underoath437 any thoughts on Moore moving up to HWT? I think he would be great at 220-230.

I would be surprised to see this happen. They recruited Singletary to be their HWT post Snyder and that is the current plan. Moore has two years left, but my guess is that he will be working on his weight more than ever in the offseason.

As I stated previously, the source of this info is known to have connections to the tOSU program. But you believe whatever you like.

Yeah, I don't see it either. More likely to be:

2018-19
184 - Hoffman (Martin redshirts)
197 - Moore
285 - Singletary

2019-20
184 - Martin (Hoffman redshirts)
197 - Moore
285 - Singletary

2020-21
184 - Ethan Smith??
197 - Hoffman
285 - Singletary

They gave him a senior sendoff in the last home dual. I'd see that as solid confirmation.

I don't think it would be unprecedented for him to return after being included in senior day, for what it's worth. Didn't McCutcheon do the same thing? Just throwing that out there because I think Cortez likely IS gone, but you just never know.

Anyone think Hall redshirts next year? As tall as Lee is, could he jump to replace Nolf? Start with the three rookies, Berge, Nolf, Cenzo, Manville, Nickel, Shak/AC, Nick.

For that to be considered at all, first Mark probably needs to want to shirt. I think that's unlikely.
Second, Manville would have to show something in the room that he did not in the open tournaments he wrestled in.

We said the same thing about Tomasello.

I could see the potential for 2019-2020 being a year PSU RS's Hall and Nick Lee and possibly Brooks along with Manville and Verk. If Hall has Olympic desires, then he might want to spend 2019 preparing for 2020. Same olympic desires for Manville, right? Maybe they use 2019-2020 as another reload, let the Bucks, Hawks and Pokes fight for a title, then come back the following year, locked and loaded once again.
