You must not know much about the Tampa fans. They are diehards. They sellout nearly every game, and they are truly Lightning fans, not like the Rays games where they only sell out when the Red Sox or Yankees are in town.

It’s a skills competition...no defense allowed. Also, not the first time a hometown hero gets all the breaks. Honestly, ASG’s are a thing of the past...even the mlb mid-year classic (which has actual playoff implications) is all fluff, little substance.

What playoff implications does the baseball AS game have?

JOKE! ASG it is supposed to be the All-Stars playing the game. That wasn’t hockey. I turned it off after five minutes.

Baseball may be the only sport that can duplicate the real game product in an all star game.

NHL has done a good job of thinking outside the box and at least trying to make the ASG as entertaining as possible. The 3 on 3 tournament was dynamite when it debuted in Nashville...but as the players and teams have adjusted to the regular season 3 on 3, it's turning into a possession battle more than run and gun with all of that space. Sprinkle in no desire to make contact in an ASG and you get a product that seems to already be in need of a tweak.

In the end though, there's only so much you can do to dress up the all star game product. The expectation that it will ever really resemble the game itself is not realistic. Its purpose is to showcase skill above all else and give the fans access to players in a more fun atmosphere.

The net benefit for the league to put the players in the Olympics as opposed to conducting the ASG is off the charts, but I digress.

Mrs KG and I went to the NHL game in Columbus a few years back (got tickets as we are partial Jackets season ticket holders). It was pretty bad hockey--no defense at all. I was glad I went--but would never go again. I have been told that the skills competition is actually a lot more fun. The ASG fan show was also enjoyable. Got my pic with the Cup and there was other fun things to do.

I also got lucky and got to go to the baseball All Star game that year (I had a good relationship with my then Reds ticket guy, who hooked me up). That was more fun and a bucket list item that I never thought I'd get to check off. But, again, I doubt I'd go twice.

Still, two all star games in the same year was pretty cool....

I wish they would schedule the NBA all star game, the NHL all star game, the Pro Bowl, and the Major League Baseball all star game for the exact same day and time. That way I could not watch them all at the same time.
