Ohio State football: Noah Spence suspended for rule violation

By Tim May The Columbus Dispatch • Wednesday January 1, 2014 7:15 PM

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Ohio State sophomore defensive end Noah Spence has been suspended three games – including Friday’s Orange Bowl -- because of what the Big Ten ruled was the use of an unapproved dietary supplement, a high-level source at Ohio State told The Dispatch today.
“I was just disappointed that the appeal didn’t go through,” Meyer said after Ohio State’s rainsoaked practice this afternoon. Meyer held out hope Spence would be able to clear up the matter, and according to the high-level source, that was because OSU officials thought Spence had a good case to have the suspension overturned.

Is there any scientific evidence showing that ecstasy is also a PED?

How many times have you heard Ecstasy described as a "unapproved dietary supplement"? Would you say there is a bit of prevarication involved?

Maybe they were aware of this article.

LINK: Supplement seller says FDA may be "confused"

"For example, the illegal drug Ecstasy contains a benzene ring and an amine group, both of which are found in OSR#1, but Ecstasy is not a dietary supplement."

Nice try , eh?

Ecstasy
Methylenedioxy-n-methylamphetamine MDMA is a 'psychedelic amphetamine'
MDMA belongs to a family of drugs known as phenethylamines. Chemically speaking, it's closely related to another phenethylamine, MDA (3, 4-methylenedioxyamphetamine), and to mescaline. MDMA is also described as an hallucinogenic stimulant, or a psychedelic amphetamine.

I get it. But what is the purpose of your post? Clearly it's not to state that ecstasy is an "unapproved dietary supplement". Is this a bash Ohio St thing? If so...good one.

I hear you loud and clear Judge. You're preaching to the choir. Do you think it might have really been a Mickey Finn both times though? :D

A "high level Ohio State official" blatantly lied to the media about what Spence was suspended for. If you see that as no big deal, "business as usual", cool.

I can understand trying to protect a kid but why say anything? Just state he failed to follow "team rules" (where have we heard that before?).

An unnamed source quoted by a newspaper was wrong? The horror. The source could have been given bad information, or could have been guessing based on evidence he had at the moment. Either way...*yawn*.

In fairness, based on your OP, the indication is that the "high level Ohio State official" said that the Big Ten referred to the substance as an "unapproved dietary supplement."

So, the way I read it, either the B1G was (laughably) protecting this Ohio State player, or the Ohio State official was lying about how the B1G official described the substance/offense.

Journalistic ethics commonly call for sources to be revealed if they deliberately lie.

"Make it clear that if a source lies or misleads you, all agreements are off. Governments, police or other groups often leak information with the deliberate attempt to “spin” the news. If they have lied to you to get their version of the story out, they deserve to be exposed."

Did Tim May ever address the fact that he was used to get a lie out to the public?

No Mr. Excuse Any & All Behavior On Behalf of My Favrite University, his point is that tO$U and its Athletic Department intentionally engaged in the UNETHICAL behavior of lying to reduce the impact of the event.

I can understand trying to protect a kid but why say anything? Just state he failed to follow "team rules" (where have we heard that before?).

Or just simply say you are not going to disclose the disciplinary infraction and leave it at that. However, this has nothing to do with the UNETHICAL BEHAVIOR OF tO$U of engaging in an intentional misrepresentation, a common lie, for PR purposes and to reduce the overall impact of the rules violation. This is a reportable rules violation under the NCAA's Drug Policy I believe which now calls into question what tO$U & Urbie reported to the NCAA and why would they engage in the duplicitous behavior of reporting false information to the press even if they did report it correctly to the NCAA (and why would the NCAA he comfortable with this duplicitous and UNETHICAL institutional behavior)?

The Buckeyes lied to try and get Spence's suspension thrown completely out. As it was, the Big Ten dropped the suspension from their policy of 1 year for testing positive to a controlled substance like Ecstasy....to 3 games. That wasn't enough for Ohio State. They wanted the suspension completely wiped away. So the "high level Ohio State official" puts out the misinformation that it was for a "dietary supplement"...and then you have Urban go to work.

"I was just disappointed that the appeal didn’t go through,” Meyer said after Ohio State’s rainsoaked practice this afternoon. Meyer held out hope Spence would be able to clear up the matter, and according to the high-level source, that was because OSU officials thought Spence had a good case to have the suspension overturned.

Yes, hope Spence is able to "clear up the matter" of testing positive for Ecstasy. Just a big misunderstanding. What the F was the "good case" to have the suspension overturned? "We're Ohio State". Surprised it didn't work in the beholden Big Ten.

So how come the b1g turd conference and NCAA are not asking any questions of tO$U? You would think these organizations would be demanding some answers given the UNETHICAL NATURE, at best, of tO$U's behavior and quite possibly an outright rules infraction, but these organizations aren't even asking for an explanation....what's that all about?

Must be another conspiracy against Penn St...
What part of "level playing field" do you not understand.

Oh wait. You're a Buckeye. Unless it involves Basketweaving or The History of OSU football, I doubt you have the capability of grasping this post

Did you ever consider that Spence lied to OSU? Of course not because that doesn't fit your narrative.
And a PSU fan really one to bash OSU fans for backing our team's (coaches and players integrity)?

OSU knew what he tested positive for from the Big Ten, not Spence.

Try harder.

It was a two part strategy last year on behalf of the Buckeyes. First get Spence's suspension overturned, and then have then purposely play bad at PSU so the officials can make incorrect calls that give them the game.

The good news is that if you wear aluminum foil on your head it all goes away.

To the Mods, I'm just throwing out a joke to have some fun.

Specific to Spence, you are accountable to the consequences of your actions, but it's still a sad story as by most accounts he's a pretty good kid, does well in the classroom, and certainly is talented on the football field. As a result of his drug use he missed the National Championhip and would have probably been starting his first NFL camp with millions of dollars in the bank.

My sides still hurt from laughing.

Rather than address any of the points I've made, just go broad and dumb.

How precisely could Spence "lie" to tO$U about the results of a drug test that the b1g turd conducted and had given the results to tO$U??? You gauche tO$U jock-sniffer homers are really too much. LMFAO. Too funny just like Maurice Clarrett, it's the kids fault, not the corrupt coaches and administrators that were using him as free labor in their corrupt revenue sport fraud-machine that was making huge $$$ for them off the kid's back!

I typically give visitors a lot of slack since I am very non-confrontational by nature, but this has to be the least intelligent post I've read. Am I to believe that NS was tested by the B1G, informed he tested positive for Ecstasy and then told to let his University/coach know? You seriously can not believe that is how it works!?

Big Ten: "So, this paper in Columbus says they have an unnamed source that says it's a dietary supplement. That's certainly more convincing than our drug test that says positive for Ecstasy! Suspension lifted!"

Especially baffling when you read this story which was just posted a couple weeks ago Judge - see hotlink below:

Former Buckeye Noah Spence starting over at Eastern Kentucky

So how is it possible that some highly placed source in the tO$U Athletic Department could report it to the Columbus Dispatch as using an illegal PEDs? Rather clear that "tO$U source" was intentionally lying to the Columbus Dispatch about the suspension - pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the caliber of people tO$U employs that would engage such an unethical strategy.

Urban was trying to get the suspension lifted. Direct quotes.

My take....OSU was hoping that the Big Ten would "play ball" and allow Spence to play despite the positive test for Ecstasy. Remember when the Big Ten allowed their "suspended" players to play in a BCS bowl game? How crazy was that? So, the "test positive for a dietary supplement" was the cover story, hoping the Big Ten would play along. Though they reduced the YEAR suspension to 3 games, they wouldn't go the rest of the way. Surprisingly, I have to add.

As we've seen with the officiating, Ohio State and Michigan operate with a different set of rules than the rest of the conference. As demonstrated when Michigan needs a quarterback.

Jake Rudock, a two-year starter at Iowa, will be a graduate transfer to Michigan and immediately eligible to compete this fall, a source confirmed to The Detroit News on Wednesday. The story was first reported by ESPN.com. Rudock's path to Michigan initially had to be cleared by the Big Ten, which lumps graduate transfers with intra-conference transfers requiring them to sit a season.

The Big Ten waived that requirement in this case — graduate transfers are immediately eligible otherwise — allowing Rudock, who recently visited Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and his staff during spring practice in Ann Arbor, to make the move.

Don't think you're too far off. Believe it or not I have found numerous articles stating that the NCAA catalogues Ectasy as a "synthetic street drug" (e.g., Crystal meth, etc...), but the b1g classifies it as a PED (Performance Enhancing Drug) and are pretty much unique in this classification among sports governing organizations (go figure!?!?). In any event, the Spence family threatened to sue the b1g because punishments are more severe for PEDs within NCAA and b1g than they are for "illegal street drugs" believe it or not, so b1g cut suspension from 1 Year to 3 games on 1st offense. However, this is also where tO$U took poetic license apparently and attempted to claim that the exposure came from a "Dietary Supplement" because the b1g always identified the banned PED to be Ecstacy (I have articles dating back to late 2013 & Jan 2014 confiming these facts. Furthermore, Spence originally claimed he had no idea how the Ecstacy entered his body but he claimed that he thought it might have been slipped in his drink during a party (and his family backed him on this). So it appears that tO$U did knowingly and intentionally misrepresent - e.g., lie - that the banned substance (which was ALWAYS known to be Ecstacy by both the b1g & tO$U from the initial reporting of the test prior to b1g champ game) was ingested while taking a "Dietary Supplement" unless of course tO$U believes drinks at parties are "dietary supplements" or Ecstacy in and of itself is a "Dietary Supplement". Hard to believe that either of those are true, but we should keep in mind that we are talking about a-hi-a and a-hi-a state....gaafaw, um-uh-yea, it was a dietary suppplement....yea, that's it, that's the ticket!
