The #4 wrestler in his division was not in the match at all today. Suriano was in COMPLETE control the entire match and Cruz never had a chance.

Minor quibble...he could have been a little more active in the 3rd to pursue the major.

Damn, that was impressive.

I actually thought he did a great job and was pressing to get the major. Cruz is very good and Nick turned a match everyone had 2-1 3-2 into a dominating performance. Hell, if I recall correctly he was shooting till the final horn.

I think he picked it up the last 30 seconds or so. Minor quibble. The young man was DOMINANT today!!!

I think he is going to win it all...Go into practice and watch him and Nico go at it....He and Nico are back and forth and Suriano has been getting the best of him lately....He will beat Gillman !!! Mark it down now....

BJC clocks are tough. He looked at his corner, tapped his wrist, and shrugged his shoulders like he could not find how much time was left. (Unfortunately it was 11 seconds)

If they are going to wrestle in the BJC, they need to add clocks at the mat.

Even sitting the stands I find myself staring at the clocks and missing the action.

Agree that he looked good - especially through the first 2. CS looked like he was a little disappointed that he more or less coasted home.....was on his feet yelling for him to be aggressive during the latter half of the third.

Wow. That's the truth.

Anyone care to comment on the scripted breaks?

Not really surprising to me. Nothing out of the staff has indicated anything other than complete confidence in our lead off guy. He simply was much better than guys like Schram and Cruz in high school and I don't see that changing.

Honestly, I don't find this to be shocking. Nick's feet defense is rock-solid and he is, imo, a little stronger on the mat than Nico was, even last year. I think he will open up as the season goes on and really surprise people.

Scripted breaks? If I understand your question...everything revolved around it being a televised dual.
Nah. Not that. The breaks are what they are. I'm talking about activities during them. Scripting a Lion to come out and have an announcer tell us to join in, or the cheerleaders scripted to do a We ARE.....etc. These are spontaneous activities and came off with a gigantic thud because they are misplaced in timing. The Lion should be hammering a bell beat after a big win, or honestly....as one of the guys comes out. Bo Nickal pulls his arms up to bring a response, because he feels it....it's the right time....

Leading groups of people in environments like this requires feel. Want the great environment to rule the day?....work with the spontaneity, not eliminate it.

edit: Sorry....thread hijacking. As you were...

I'm starting to think that the coronation of Gilman is a bit premature.

Certainly Gilman should be favored over everyone, but people are treating him like he's a three-time NCAA champ already. I would be surprised if Suriano were to pull the upset, but not completely shocked.

Little Nicky wants in to the friendly pin competition :)

Gilman was pinned in semis his junior year by a very good true freshman (Zeke Moisey) and Nick comes in more decorated that him. A title for him this season is quite possible.

Suriano was confident and tenacious. I was most impressed when, after he got the escape, he seemed to think to himself "I want some points, NOW...I don't care who this guy is." And he went and got them. A lot of guys wouldn't have finished that takedown.

Yeah, that sequence reminded me of Zain in the finals against Sorensen. Cruz had very good defense. Didn't matter, Nick just tenaciously kept powering through, until he secured the TD. You're right not many would have gotten that TD.

Gilman's junior year he ost in the finals to Nico. The year before Moises had his run.

He had to improvise a bit as Cruz was backpedaling, and just kept going until he finished. He could've stopped at maybe three points in that sequence. Tenacious is definitely the right word.

The backpoints shortly after were unusual too. From top with his inside leg hooked over Cruz's he halfheartedly tries to pull Cruz over. Cruz offers surprisingly little resistance. Suriano gets a better grip on Cruz's shoulder and just flips Cruz straight over like it was practice. Perhaps he learned something about his own strength there. Or perhaps Cruz was demoralized from that TD and was still beating himself up. Either way, damn impressive to have put Cruz on his back that easily.

Suriano is going to beat him....Sit back and watch.....Guy's training is INSANE as well...HE IS IN SUPER SHAPE !!!!

He is back and forth with Bo....We need him in the line up !!!! He would win it this year at 74 plus get us bonus points....
Not sure how we could just crown Mark Hall this year after all, he was just beaten by a relative nobody. Don't get me wrong, he's good... he's very good but this isn't high school wrestling anymore. He wouldn't just walk through the field this year.

I don't see guys even thinking about getting at Suriano's legs. I saw Cruz try like a half shot and it was almost embarrassing how far off he was. This kids defense is tremendous. These guys better look for tie-ups and be heavy on the head otherwise they have no shot. I'm not saying that will work but somebody better find a plan B. Suriano vs Gilman is very high on my list of must see matches.

Hall is very good and will be great once he is ready. But as you note he lost to a 174 pounder who just finished 5th at Cliff Keen and is not ranked in the top 20 and yet spyker says he is hanging with Nickal in practice. I would have to say spyker's credibility just took a huge spike upward, wouldn't you?

Spyker is watching practice, probably takedowns, and he could be right as Hall didn't lose on his feet. Point still valid, though...

So you're suggesting that the consensus overall #1 prospect isn't quite ready for college competition, when the #9 prospect, Suriano, has shown himself to be not only ready but to be a title threat?

174 is a very weak division this year. No one said Hall would walk through the field, but if Hall wrestles this year he is immediately in the top 4 at 174. Would you dispute that assertion?

If you're thinking I meant Hall isn't ready for college competition then you may need to take a course in literary interpretation. Furthermore, spyker said he WILL win the title this year. A foolish statement after losing to a relative nobody just weeks ago. And no, I wouldn't just put him in the top 4. He still looks undersized to me, he isn't wrestling high school competition anymore and quite frankly may not even want his shirt to be pulled so he can work on some things.

Would I predict success for Hall? Yes. Would I guarantee it like you and spyker? No, I'm not ready to do that.

Disregarding your arrogant snideness for a moment, I'll respond to your content.

The Hall is undersized argument is absurd. He's faced this criticism his entire life and he has dominated at every level. It's ludicrous.

Second, as I noted and you disregarded, 174 is very weak. Epperly at #2? Nickal handled him with ease last year. Crutchmer at 4? Not impressed at all.
I wouldn't pencil him in at champion like Spyker, but Hall would be absolutely be top 4 the second he stepped on the mat and he'd have a reasonable shot at a title.

We have differing opinions, certainly nothing wrong with that. Btw, if you had resisted putting words into my mouth I wouldnt have been so arrogant as you call like it.
