Back about 5 years ago, Flo was all over the promoting of the Rutgers program. I, myself, was more than a little skeptical. To me, the Suriano and Ashnault titles were lipstick on a pig or a paint job over a rusted-out car. They hadn't beaten a top ten team since the 2015-16 season (Cornell and Nebraska fell to Rutgers that season) and they hadn't gotten close to equaling their best ever B1G tourney performance in 2016.

They continued their downhill slide over these subsequent 5 years. A couple of years ago, Suriano left the fold. Okay, no biggie. He's not the most loyal and committed wrestler on the planet.

But in the last year, first Ashnault left (to go to Princeton, no less). Then this summer, Pritzlaff took the HC position at Columbia and took Rivera and Jeff Buxton (SKWC and former Blair HC) with him. leaving Goodale (never an AA at Lock Haven) in charge with Steve Mytych (never an AA at Drexel), Joe Pollard (never even a NQ at Rider) and new-to-coaching Mikey Labriola (some excellent wrestling credentials at least - 5 time AA) for his staff and only Goodale and Pollard as coaches at the SKWC. To be fair, there is only one resident athlete at the SKWC, so you don't need a big staff, I guess. Yes, they have one of their "best" recruiting classes ever coming in this year, but it wouldn't be shocking to me if none of them hit the podium during their college careers. Goodale's peak season was roughly halfway through his current tenure and he has come nowhere near it (except for the Suriano and AA titles) since.

Even the most cockeyed optimists among the Rutgers faithful (and these folks have a stronger sense of denial than the Iowa faithful) have to be a little disquieted. If Rutgers' "rise" in college wrestling was a viable news story, I have to believe this mass exodus from the Rutgers program and their 8 year slide has to be at least as big news. But it's been crickets over at Flo.

You do remember how awful they were right? They have 4 All-Americans on their team currently.

They beat Nebraska and Cornell in duals and got 4th in the B1Gs with almost 100 points in 2015-16. I don't care how many AAs they have now. As a team, they are much worse.

I actually like their team and recent recruiting classes. Mytych seems to be a great addition. They probably have a ceiling as a team but a good Rutgers is interesting and I think can knock off some upper echelon teams in next few years.

I have said it before, I have known Mytych since he was in 5th grade. He is a super hard worker and a great coach. He is probably mostly responsible for their recent recruiting successes and will continue to help them get better. And the wrestlers love him! His son is a hammer too, for his age.

But I might be biased.

They've had good recruiting classes before under Goodale and nothing came of them. Iirc, Rutgers has had 15 AAs under Goodale and 14 were when Pritzlaff was on staff. Call me crazy, but you lose the co-first natty champs and your only 4-time AA for your program - the two best HS wrestlers in NJ history, btw. Suriano just leaves. Ashnault leaves to take a job at your biggest in-state rival. He's replaced by Joe Pollard. Then you lose your associate HC, who is one of the best HS wrestlers in NJ history, a two-time NCAA champ and a world medalist, who had collegiate coaching experience, with pretty good success, at Michigan and Wisconsin before he came to Rutgers and replace him with no one. You lose your SKWC HC and replace him with no one. Rivera>Labriola because Rivera just won an Olympic medal, which means another downgrade. Sounds to me like a program in serious disarray.

But clearly I'm seeing things wrong. The future is bright on the banks of the Raritan. SMH.

Lol geez, just saying i think the team has some potential and that a coaches record as a wrestler isn’t the only thing that makes a great coach.

as I have said before Rutgers will never be better than middle on the pack in the big!
Explain 2016, please. I was wrong, they were 5th in B1Gs that season with 106.5 points. Pretty even with Nebraska. They were going in the right direction up 'til then. Since then, the cruiseliner has been taking on water.

I would not call 5th in the big even close to a top team!!Like I said middle on the league!when they hit top 5 in the NCAA tourney let me know!

Rutgers finished 15th at NCAAs in 2016, with 30.0 pts.

The resurgence of the RU hate from Matter and this discussion got me thinking. I can't remember the genesis of the "perennial top-10." Did this come from a RU fan debating with Matter? Or is it from a Goodale quote?

Set the tone for the next 8 and counting years. They sh*t the bed at Nationals after a great performance at B1Gs. But that's been their history under Goodale. First home match at the RAC against Lehigh - took a dump. They had a real shot against Iowa at home a few years back and got trounced. The list goes on and on.

That was Goodale. I think it was 2016 before Nationals that he said "we feel we have multiple time national champs in this room". Then the room full of multiple time champs went out and got 15th place.

They should have fired Goodale years ago and convinced Pritzlaff to take over. Pritzlaff was the key to whatever little success they had.

It was the Rutgers fan base, or at least the Rutgers board. No doubt stoked by Goodale, but not to that extent. Goodale never claimed that level of success immediately.

Joining B10 certainly brought out the crazies.

Matter will meet Penn State fans under the bridge, if they say anything remotely positive about Rutgers.

There's very little positive, if anything, to say. They have had their staff gutted; have a bunch of guys coming in that will have to overachieve to ever stand on the podium and they'll have to do it without a D1 level of coaching; can't fill their associate HC position; have their season tickets sales dropping off into the dumpster; and have managed to f up the parking situation at the RAC so badly people are staying away from single matches. Even the forum fans are turned off at this point for the most part. But the future is bright.

As a former J&J guy (Headquartered in New Brunswick) I have a good number of Rutgers friends. A few are diehards and support their teams through thin and thin. I admire their persistence and suspect that what ever satisfaction they get is based on their inner expectations. Outwardly, …. ah … they are Jersey guys and gonna do what Jersey guys do …. which is to blotovate, preen, and construct alternate universes where they are superior.
