Loved Bo's approach last night. He refused to "give" anything to Martin and to allow his own mistakes to beat him. He was still the aggressor, but he didn't overextend himself. Sometimes it's wise to dial it back a little against a particular opponent and last night was one of those times. Since the match was in the bag by the time Bo wrestled, it was especially so, imo.

When MyMar came out and wasn't aggressive at all, or show any inclination to "mix it up" with Bo, you knew he was resigned to losing and just looking to keep the score respectable. Bo played it smart, rather than go "high risk" in an all out attempt to take a MyMar only looking to "counter" to his back, he instead settled for complete domination of a passive MyMar from opening-horn to closing-horn who embarrassingly gave up from the start, was resigned to the loss from the get-go and wrestled to keep the score as respectable as possible (especially embarrassing approach for a returning NCAA Champion imho).

Says something the reigning national champion wrestled to no give up bonus... something is wrong with that.

Martin will NEVER EVER beat Bo this year !!!! BO WILL MAJOR HIM NEXT TIME....Bo is going after Dean BIG TIME !!!! BO WILL WIN THAT WEIGHT CLASS THIS YEAR....Casey and Cael have been wrestling him a lot in practice and Bo is back and forth with them...Those who have been to practice know....He is also hitting the weights and is very strong....Yes. Wrestling very smart this year....Staying away from throws that are not there....

Don't think that's quite fair, because Martin did shoot a few times earlier in the match -- only to have Bo stuff it or score on counters and scrambles.

But Martin simply is not an all-out-attack guy against opponents at or near his talent level. He's more, cough cough, tactical than that.

Some of you guys simply cant be fair to an opponent.
Martin wrestled aggressively enough.
Both guys were wary of getting caught in a big throw, as well they should be.
Even tho it was not real high scoring, there was a lot of action, lots of flurries and lots of good wrestling, both offensively and defensively there.
Good match by both guys.
Bo is simply better.

Too funny, losing 8-2 is not losing "a low scoring affair" especially when the 8 points is put up against a returning national champion and that same returning national champ can only muster 2 points off escapes. The only party who was "low-scoring" in that match was MyMar, who wrestled like he was satisfied to keep it to complete domination by Bo as long as it wasn't a major....which it would have been had MyMar even remotely wrestled "to win" in the 3rd period. Embarrassing that he gave up and wrestled to lose and to simply prevent Bo from scoring team bonus.

Bo wrestled smart and took what Martin gave him. Several times he tried to line up a big throw / move and Martin bailed every time. Bo took the points and the win. Very happy with that.

Yes, he's a guy that likes to counter, but I still say it's pretty pathetic that he didn't even make an attempt to win the match in the 3rd because he knew his attacks would likely surrender points as Bo, being way out front, could simply wait for his increasingly more desperate attempts and look to counter for easy points...pretty pathetic that MyMar didn't even make an attempt to win it in 3rd, but choose instead to be satisfied that he narrowly prevented Bo from majoring him??? Made all the worse by his big-mouth pops running his mouth all the time while in the stands, on the boards, etc...

He's 1-4 against Bo in matches and the 4 losses weren't remotely close and the match he won was only because Bo got past center on his throw which initially put MyMar to his back, but the slight over-rotation by Bo provided enough momentum to get elevated over (i.e., simply lucky that Bo made a very slight mistake allowing a lucky counter).

MyMar is 1-4 vs Bo.

got this quote from Bo out of the Lewistown Sentinel. Thought it was telling that he felt Martin wouldn't wrestle him.

“I was going for the big move. I was trying to put him on his back. Every time I felt like I was locked up in a position, he didn’t really want to wrestle through it. He kind of like bailed,” he said.

“With that, it’s hard for me to get that when he’s bailing out of those positions and he’s not really trying to wrestle through it. If he tries to wrestle through it, then he’s going to go to his back.”

Good for Bo - tell it like it plainly was! MyMar accepted the loss, never attempted to come back after going down big and simply wrestled not to give up the major. IOW, he settled for just being completely dominated whistle-to-whistle. Really???

This^ IMO if Bo wrestles like this in the championship match last year, he would have a chance to be a 4-timer. But
that's not who he was last year, he wanted to put an exclamation point on his season. This was a smart match, the team win was locked up, no need to do anything spectacular, just get the win.

Still eats at me that Penn State only won 2 individual national titles last year with 5 finalists. Bo could have won if he didn't make that mistake, McIntosh wrestled not to lose and gave up that late takedown to lose 3-1 to Cox, and Nolf lost that last-minute heartbreaker to I-Mar. All 5 could have won a title last year.

In fact Martin was in on a shot 10 seconds into the match. Martin's problem is Bo is just better than him.

Did you even watch the match? Martin was the only one who took a shot in the 2nd and 3rd periods; 1 in the 2nd that Bo ended up getting TD, and 2 in 3rd (Bo fought one off, and ended up with TD in other).
You should watch the match.

Mmmmhhhhmmm, that's why Bo Nickel himself said MyMar shamelessly "bailed" every time he attempted to further engage him in a mutual tie? Here read it yourself in Bo's own words:

Not correct, he gave Bo a *very* good match last year at the Nittany Lion open. Four of their five bouts have been regular decisions, which is not an easy feat against our gladiator!! Martin is a super athletic guy who will be a factor through 2019. I personally believe he'd be a holy terror if he took more of a "Penn State" (or "Snyder") approach. He's only a true sophomore, so it could happen.

Bo/Martin matches are strange for me to watch. In every one of them I clearly understand Bo is far and away the better wrestler yet fear is there that he gets caught. It's tough to relax and just enjoy..

I think, J-town, that is an observation I share as well. I do think, however, that the 2015 Bo was a lot more reckless than the 2016 version. This version has shown the ability to recalibrate during a match. When I watched him wrestle Dudley, he knew what was going to work, and he took advantage of it. Much more tactical this year.

He also got pinned and beat badly during regular season PSU-daO$U dual (Bo had him on his back and would have pinned him if the horn hadn't saved him iirc). BTW, an 8-2 defeat is not a "low scoring", close, extremely competitive match either.

You need to watch the match. If you actually did watch it last night, try again while you are sober.
All your comments about Martin in this thread are embarrassing and off-base.

With all due respect to Bo, If by "bailing" on things saves Martin from being thrown to his back, then that's exactly what he should be doing.

I know what Bo said and I know what you wrote. Your comments are full of shit. Martin was the only wrestler who shot in the 2nd and 3rd period. Martin was plenty aggressive, and it cost him, as Bo countered for his last two TD's. If you actually watched the match you would know that.
It seems like you have a problem with Martin, not sure why....

^^ This is correct, although I don't think Bo "blamed" Martin. I think this was just a hyper-competitor a little frustrated at not getting a pin when he thought he had it lined up, and a few folks over-interpreting what he said.

Count me in the camp that thought MyMar gave it a go last night. He was plenty aggressive, but kept coming up short. Bo was able to convert all of MyMar's shots into scramble situations, and that's where Bo won on every count.

As an aside, I spent much of the day finally converting my DVR recording of last year's Nationals to DVD. Today was actually the first time I saw Martin's post-victory interview after the final (couldn't bear to watch it until now). I have to admit I was impressed with the tact and maturity of the kid, especially in the context of hearing/reading all about his dad's behavior last season. MyMar seems to be above all that, and I don't have anything against him beyond that he beat "our guy" for a national championship last year. That's not really something to hold against a person, if one is reasonable.

You're the one that needs to go rewatch the video champ, because you're full of crap in your claims. Bo scored the only TD of the first period off his own shot a low, inside single at end of period. Nickal 2-0 after first. Martin was down in 2nd and got out quickly. Bo got a TD off a scramble at end of period to lead 4-1. Bo was down to start 3rd and scored a clean reversal for his 6-1 lead. Martin escaped with just under a minute for his 2nd point. Martin made a couple non-commital half-shots but didn't come close to anything. Bo shot on another single with under 30 seconds - Martin countered with a reach over scramble effort, but Bo converted his shot for the TD with under 15 seconds left. Final 8-2.

Your notion that MyMar was the aggressor for the entire match is laughable - he wrestled incredibly passive and with very little urgency given that he was down 6-2 after being reversed and then escaping with roughly a minute to go. He wrestled like he thought it was an accomplishment to only lose 6-2 which was stretched to 8-2 when he couldn't thwart Bo from converting his single leg TD initiated with just under 30 seconds to go.

Go watch practice...They are back and forth and Bo gets the upper hand the majority of the time now !!!! HE WILL BE YOUR NATIONAL CHAMPION AT 184......WORK ETHIC IS INSANE AND HE IS ALSO VERY STRONG THIS YEAR....

Called COACHING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look for the finals to end at 184 in St Louis this year. What is going to be great, will be starting at 174, with Mark Hall.

MyMar has a distinct size advantage over Bo. If you look at size alone, you'd think he would have handled the bump to 184 better.

In the dual meet last year, they were scoreless after the first and Bo was trailing 2-1 after the second. The final was 11-5, but that was a competitive bout. Bo is better than Martin, but Martin is a very worthy competitor. Why do we have to pretend otherwise?

Yeah I agree with that. Bo wasn't blaming or disrespecting the way Myles wrestled him in any way whatsoever. Probably a poor choice of words on my part.
