No BWI LMS Contest this season

I've thought long and hard about this, but I just don't see how to effectively stage a BWI Last Man Standing contest for the college wrestling season.

One of the key aspects of the rules has been if a wrestler misses a scheduled match, then that counts as a loss for purposes of the LMS contest. Between potential quarantining for COVID, many teams staging tri-duals where the possibility of injury (and thus missing the 2nd match) are increased, etc. has the potential to impact too many contestants as wrestlers may end up missing matches through no fault of their own.

Plus, with a greatly reduced schedule for all teams, there is also a high probability that multiple wrestlers will go undefeated during the season, which could make it difficult (and potentially impossible, depending on how the respective wrestlers do in conference and NCAA Championships) to determine a winner.

I'm particularly disappointed, as due to my schedule I was unable to put together the BWI LMS contest last season.

@bowandarrow might be the only one that isn't disappointed by this news. He still has board bragging rights from the 2018-19 BWI LMS contester.

Sorry guys. Short of my being totally incapacitated, there will be a BWI LMS contest for the 2021-22 season.

I think you meant the opposite in this last sentence, Tom.

I agree though--the nature of the LMS standing contest is especially upended by what's guaranteed to be a weird year with unanticipated absences and lineup holes that can filled be anyone on the roster, given how redshirting is moot for this season.

Tom, something to ponder: will the 2020 All-Americans be eligible since they were declared AAs without a tourney?

Probably few will not place this year, still a possibility.

hmm, good question. I guess I'll have 10 months or so to kick that one around. I could see a strong argument either way on this one.

No strong thoughts on this either, but dug into it a little ...

Had forgotten that 2020 AAs were awarded by NWCA, at 3 levels (1st team = 8 per weight, 2nd team = 4, 3rd team = 4). NCAA did not recognize AAs in 2020.

Also was surprised at the number of First Team names that simply did not scream All-American. Add guys changing weights, plus Olympic Shirt returnees, plus some good incoming freshmen ... several 2020 First Team guys might not place this year. Something to watch in March.

Geez, can't we get just any sense of normalcy? We can't hide from this virus forever. If we want to participate in LMS, we should have that right. I'll wear the damn mask below my nose, if I have to.
