Nolf takes JoJo Smith! Zain TF's his opponent

I was getting on CP for his gut feeling rankings early in the season

what an idiotic thing to do. preseason rankings are just that -- rankings before anyone competes in the season. between guys coming of redshirts, guys changing weights, guys expected to wrestle their first college matches (non-Opens), it's impossible to rank guys on pure performance. And even if you based it purely on performance, how would you handle things like: 1) Nico coming off a RS, after going 2nd, 2nd, and 3rd the previous 3 years, 2) Conaway moving up a weight class, after finishing 8th at NCAAs, 3) Retherford moving up a weight class after a RS, having finished 5th at NCAAs as a true freshman? And that's just focusing on a few PSU wrestlers. Anybody doing rankings is juggling comparable issues at each weight class for every team/wrestler. Even if you did go strictly by performance last year to make rankings, you know in advance that things can change from year to year. Cody Brewer was a NCAA champ last year, so how come he's not currently #1 at his weight class? Oh, I guess people change, situations change, etc., despite what last year's performance would indicate.

Anybody that fixates on preseason rankings, and then harps on them nearly 2 months after the season started, shows very poor knowledge of what preseason rankings are. IMHO, it also shows very poor character.

Amalone I grew up with Joey I could tell you some real doozies for stories about that fine man.He pretty much grew up in my house with my brother and I. Yes I will attest to the persona that John Smith pretty much uses and ruins wrestlers, on a year to year basis. I never really understand why great wrestlers go there to die!

PSUChiro... Joey was the quietest, most unassuming 3 time champ a person could meet. It's great that you got to experience so much of his life as he was growing up. I only got to work out with him to prepare for districts at Shippensburg University... but I got better because I wrestled Joey. He never slacked, he never took a second off to dog it in practice. The kid at the time was a warrior and for that I will be grateful for making me better. I outweighed him by about 15 to 20 lbs. He never complained once, never bitched about the disparity. He would just go at it. I will always remember those days down in the "dungeon" at Hanover School working out with him and his other teammates. Steve Elicker I think was in our round robin group. If you happen to know him. Great stuff and thanks for the comment Chiro.

I was getting on CP for his gut feeling rankings early in the season and his commentating in the finals. I was using him as a example which I did direct it right at Flo and CP. I also did it earlier in the season too.
Yeah I agree Those rankings were inflated Crutchmer #1 I think not. Glass houses and all that Mike.

All things being equal, Crutchmer number 1 at 174 made a lot more sense that JG 1 at 141. KC was the highest returning AA at the weight. Epperly would have been a good choice as well. Obviously things have changed, like they always do. JG being number 1 at a weight he didn't compete in was questionable. Once again, it doesn't matter because the rankings mean nothing on the grand scheme and it all sorts itself out.

Look JoJo was late same as a few others during the night including a champion. He did show up when they were starting to face the other direction with a smile on his face. I stated facts, if you want to say more go for it, after all it never stopped me!:)

That is not true - Lil jojo didn't show at all. Period. Don't cover for him liar

Crutchmer at #1 was more obvious than Gulibon at #1. While you were responding to lyco's post, IMHO you're not putting proper things in proper perspective here. Flo gave a very long explanation about Jimmy being #1 -- their initial thoughts were not to have him there, but there wasn't a great option at 141, and the more they worked through the variables the more they came to believe that there was more justification of his being #1 than the alternatives. Plus, they stated that they expected a lot of movement in the 141 rankings as the season played out. In addition, if I recall correctly he was only preseason #1 for a few days, as Flo learned that Henderson was moving to 141, so they moved him into the preseason #1 and Jimmy to #2.

Nothing like throwing a kid who appears to be struggling under the bus to make an unnecessary point. But hey, some folks get their jollies that way.

Preseason rankings are immaterial, but you can't have it both ways -- if the 141 rankings were off, so were the 174 rankings.

And they're a distraction. Tognetti must be delighted to see a re-debate over meaningless preseason rankings, and thus ignoring his sarcastic 2nd tweet about Gulibon leading the team in confidence.

I'm having trouble following the logic of responding to Nickal tweets with JG stuff. They are preseason rankings and now they are gone. Mike, let them go!!

OMG WHO CARES

Nickal is #1 at 74. Gulibon had an ankle injury. Tognetti's horse is bad. That's all that matters

I can't belive I'm going to continue to talk about preseason rankings, but the 2 scenarios aren't really similar. Crutchmer was the highest returning AA at 174 and multiple outlets ranked him 1. JG finished fifth at 133, while Heil finished fourth behind Steiber, Port and Carter. I also think that Jack could have gone first. If I remember correctly Flo was the only one to put him first and they initially though five, which is about where most put him.

The rankings aren't the issue. They're merely Tognetti's excuse to take potshots.

Regarding JoJo and the award ceremony, he was not there for the first round of photos however when the guys turned to face the crowd behind them for additional photos, he came running up onto the podium. I saw this on the live feed; Bater and CP were even talking about it.

So what you're telling us is JoJo showed up late to the award ceremony like he showed up late to the match (only engaging Nolf in the 3rd)?

You're generally right, loco, but in this case Smith did finally show up at the podium. He scurried in with his shoes untied and didn't make it until the wrestlers turned to face the rest of the crowd, but he did make it. Seemed to have a good-natured "oops, I'm sorry" look, so not a big deal.

As to the matchup, I thought Nolf was the more aggressive and a little quicker overall. Future matchups should be interesting; I think Nolf gets the nod until proved otherwise.

Fellas, Jo Jo did make the podium, he was just a lil late ;). That being said, gotta give the kid credit...stall, ran etc. he made it a good match & had a chance to steal it at the end. It was close. Nolf was on his toes to end it no doubt. Jo Jo is a competitor and given his lineage he will be a heck of a wrestler...more than likely a 4-time AA, probably a 2-time NCAA champ. At least that's what I believe...
