Absolute shame that Devin lost his life because Carter and the staffer decided to race while intoxicated. Makes you absolute sick to read.

CLARIFICATION: It's unclear right now if Carter was intoxicated but the staffer was.

yikes. That and the Alabama basketball team shooting scandal isn't painting the SEC in the best light. For those that don't know, a player brought a gun to a party where that gun was used to shoot a person (not the player). then, after the scandal, in pre-game intros, their introduction included another player "patting him down".

Just read Carter was onsite at the scene of crash. But he took off before emergency vehicles arrived on scene. Driver that was killed has a BAC over legal limits. Makes me question why Carter took off before emergency services arrived. They were leaving a strip club. Horrible situation. If I’m an NFL owner, I’d question drafting the kid. He’s gonna have some though questions at the combine interviews.

Legally what would happen if a kid was driving a car given to them thru NIL deal. Couldn’t car owner be held liable? When attorneys sue they go after the deep pockets.

I would guess that the car use came with disclaimers. If not, they are pretty stupid. Their only path would be to show that the car dealership knew, or should have known, that the car was going to be used illegally.

I'd assume they're setup similar to how a leasing company isn't liable if a lessee gets into an accident even though they own the car.

No one in their early 20s needs a car with 700 horsepower.

Dumb and tragic.

Carter may have not been drinking, but his freedom is likely in jeopardy let alone his NFL career. He probably gets taken 2nd or 3rd day given this.

Also he was driving a Trackhawk, a 700 hp Grand Cherokee with the hellcat engine. Just as unthinkable decision to race on the street, especially with a vehicle with as much horsepower as a NASCAR car.

He might slip a couple of picks…unless something changes, he’s not lasting to the second day, or even deep into round one.

Sounds like he got away from things just long enough that he can't be charged with DUI, but I wouldn't be shocked if they eventually try to turn the racing charge into something more.
I'd be pretty surprised, since more often than not, I believe they overcharge at first, then use that as leverage for getting him to plea to something less. Maybe more will come out on this one, but I don't see them announcing this today if they didn't cover all of their bases.

This--there's no way Detroit passes on him with 2 first round picks if he's sitting there at 6
Someone will take a chance on him because he's arguably the best player in the draft. Just pushes Anderson and Wilson up a slot
CBS mocked him falling to 17 with the Steelers--that's too good to be true as a Steelers fan lol

If he's guilty of what was described above, and he doesn't go to jail for at least a few years, it's a shame. He could have killed someone's family.

You'll certainly think it's a shame then...the maximum penalty is a year in jail.

Racing charge is going to be difficult unless there is video evidence. They tack racing charges onto a lot of reckless driving incidents involving multiple vehicles that aren't really racing.

The shutdowns or whatever they're called where idiots block intersections and highways and do doughnuts and burnouts often get tagged with racing even though they're not for example.

If a trackhawk was actually racing an expedition the trackhawk would be so far in front of the expedition it would just look like two speeding cars a quarter mile plus apart or more.

Wondering if it's something he said that led to this charge? His story isn't very clear. Was he there when the wreck occurred and left? Or did he hear it from where he was staying and ventured over? Then he was there 2 hours later or something?

Maybe more will come out on this one, but I don't see them announcing this today if they didn't cover all of their bases.

At the beginning of combine week is a fairly interesting time to drop this information.

He's definitely not going to jail for "at least a few years"....if he gets a week I'd be shocked. At most is probably 4-6 months and he'll serve that during an off-season

First time offender...can afford a good legal team...I'd also be shocked if he ends up serving a week (heck, I'll be surprised if he serves a day). I'm looking towards a plea, fine, suspended sentence, etc...and then being a party in the inevitable Civil Suit.

To be clear, I'm referring to how our legal system should work, not how it does work.

I race cars (on tracks), and also drive those cars on public roads. horsepower is fun if you can be responsible. 700 in the trackhawk is a little misleading since it weighs so much. It’s fast no doubt but it’s not some 4 door Ferrari. Many cars are faster with much less power. Heck my Golf (with around 400hp) ran almost identical quarter mile times. I’d like something with around 500-600hp next to be honest, and that’s something I’ll drive my son to school in.

Being contrarian aside it’s excessive yes. But so are plenty of things in American society.

Sounds like they have a lot of witnesses to the racing. And likely someone recorded some video these days.

As for trackhawk vs expedition…..true on a straight away with no traffic. But this was with lots of traffic which means a lot is determined by driving skills and just how stupid one is.

I’m just saying it’s unlikely they were actually racing and more likely were both driving like jackasses, weaving out of traffic etc without the intent of “winning”. Likely one chasing the other. Is a chase a race? Age old question.

They weren’t lining up and doing pulls against each other in “mexico”. It’s arguing semantics, they were undoubtedly being idiots.

Wow....lots of stuff here. So a bunch of people associated w UGA Football end up at a Strip Club after their big celebration.

While that may be offensive to some, I've got no issue with it. In an earlier post I mentioned the Strip Club culture that I was exposed to in Atlanta in the 90s (pun intended!) It was "normal" for mixed company to hit a happy hour where naked women danced around....

Real issues start with use of University vehicle on non University business...unless it is argued that the afterparty was tied to the celebration. In theory the university truck is the vessile for the accident, but the truck was not at fault, the driver was. If I loaned you my car and you crashed it and hurt your passenger am I liable? Likely not. If the car was not inspected? Likely changes things because now I'm avoiding policies which could mean I'm willfully putting others at risk. Assuming the car was safe then the driver is at fault.

A major issue is the BAC .197. Clearly on her and maybe the bartender/server at the establishment that served her if she was buying rounds. If she was using a UGa credit card to expense the drinks then big university liability. If others where buying multiple rounds and distributing the beverages themselves then it could be argued that the bartender could not know that 8 beers were served to her in 3 hours. But if she was drinking a signature tequila drink and not many others had that drink that could bite the bartender. The server likely is in the direct line of fire if they ran a tab and provided a table of 4-6 people 20 drinks in a short time. The math would mean they would/should know that patrons are drunk. The Strip Club may rue the night that the Dawgs decided to grace them with their presence.

As a young person likely without a lot of personal wealth it is unlikely that the plaintiffs get much from her estate. Insurance coukd be another source of $ but there are usually limits within policies.

Like we learned the hard way with Sandusky...the university has deep pockets and a vested interest in making this story go away as quickly as possible. I hope that the families are able to feel as good as they possibly can, and that all is settled off the public stage. Unfortunately it will likely be the opposite.

Maybe Rod Erickson is available to consult for UGA? They are gonna lose...the question is how badly?

I believe he was cited for racing prior to this tragedy. Also read they have some surveillance video.

While the university has stated that the Expedition use that evening was unauthorized...I surmise that evidence of how much "rules" were strictly enforced will be at issue.
Pretty evident that Kirby relaxed discipline when he came on the scene.

Surprised he and Karen with the flies on her have not already apologized.

He should not be drafted if the NFL learned anything from Henry Ruggs, at least until the legal process plays out, since there was allegedly more than one vehicle incident. The fact that he left the scene makes him a dogshit human being, and the fact that he also lied about being there when confronted by investigators says everything anyone needs to know about his character.

There's zero chance he goes undrafted. There's zero chance he falls outside of the top 10. No one cares about their character if they can play. Reality. Who cares if he's a good guy. He's not trying to be a saint or something that requires morals. He's playing ball for money.

Is that your view, or is that how you characterize the NFL's view? Would you draft a guy like that?

Yes I would draft anyone. The goal is to win games. This isn't college football. We're talking about the NFL. If you're not in prison and can help my team I'd draft you if it's worth the risk. Detroit has two first round picks...absolutely worth the risk at 6. If a guy with number 1 overall talent falls passed 8 its worth the risk. They're athletes nothing more. The problem is some want them to be role models. They're playing a game for money.

I'm a Bears fan. Carter and Anderson are (were?) expected to be their top 2 targets for their first round pick, in an unknown order. Personally I hope the Bears now steer clear of Carter. They do typically avoid low character guys. The bad news for the Bears is this hurts them in terms of their possible trade down prospects. Before they could trade down to #4 and be pretty confident one of either Carter or Anderson would still be there. Now if they don't want Carter, they can't trade that low as Anderson will likely be gone by then.

Supposedly there is video evidence. I worked at Charlotte DOT. We had cameras are every signalized intersection. It’s very likely Atlanta is the same. Question is will the footage go missing. It’s only stored for a few days. So it needs to be pulled and stored.

And that's why some people don't care for the NFL.

Yeah, that attitude worked really well for the Sincy Bengals when they had a team full of thugs and miscreants.

There's ton of example of "character concerns" guys that have turned out to be just fine. Young adults do stupid things--we likely all did as well in our late teens and early 20s--we just weren't under a microscope and thankfully social media wasn't a thing (for me anyway)

I'm sure you'd prefer Anderson and Chicago is one of the teams I do think would avoid him (for better or worse) but if he goes 6 to Detroit then Chicago might regret that
