In honor of Chickenman Testa's states thread, figured I might expand the geography as my wife and I love to travel. Fun fact, over 95% of this has been done since 2011.

My rules are simple to count, must have set foot on the ground not in an airport terminal.

Continents
6(will hit Antarctica in March and be done with all 7)

Countries
48 plus 3 autonomous areas in China

North America/Caribbean
US, Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Aruba, Cayman Islands

Central/South America
Belize, Honduras, Peru, Bolivia, Chile(including Easter Island)

Europe
Russia, Sweden, Latvia, Iceland, England, Ireland, France, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria

Africa
Egypt, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Swaziland

Asia

I know some people that say it doesn't count if you haven't spent the night. That eliminates several Caribbean countries for me as I did them on a cruise and I was back on the ship to sleep.

Total under those rules would be 5 continents with 7 countries.

USA, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Kenya, Australia, South Korea.
Caribbean * include Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis (not Nevis, though), and St. Martin**

**St. Martin is technically France/The Netherlands, but it doesn't seem right to count them so I just count St. Martin as its own single thing.

(only been to the airport in London and Singapore, but left the airport in Doha, so could argue for Qatar)

Asia: Bahrain, Saudi Arabia
Europe: Croatia, Italy
South America: Suriname
North America/Caribbean: US, Canada, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos, Mexico

Your quite the world traveler. Me, not so much. I'll list the countries and leave it at that.

Germany, Belgium, Luxemburg, France, Austria, Panama, Cuba, Japan, The Philippines and Canada. Up next: Mexico.

Just curious about your Antarctic itinerary. Having spent two months there doing research, I am not a fan of it becoming a tourist destination. Not being critical of you personally, just curious what your trip entails.

Also, if you are going to the peninsula only (i.e. possibly not even within the Circle), I'm not going to give you credit for having been there ;-)

My guess is that I have weirdest ratio of continents to countries.

Continents: Four (North America, Australasia, Asia, Antarctica)

Countries: Six (USA, Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, Japan, New Zealand)

Canada
Mexico
Belize
Jamaica
Trinidad
Barbados
England
France
Germany
Sweden
Belgium
South Africa
Guam
Thailand
Laos
U.S. Marshall Islands---93'-500 Chinese Refugees on an 1 sq mile island for a month ;(

A few years ago I was in Goa, India and met an older (retired) American couple from Kentucky - really good people. The husband had been in something like 185 countries at that point in his life. The wife said the family had a running joke that he must have been in the CIA, because he seemed to have been in several countries when coups happened. He claimed to be in sales. After sharing dinner (pork vindaloo) and a couple bottles of wine, I came to believe that the running joke might actually have been the truth.

I've never met anyone who has ever claimed to have visited more countries.

Been looking at Antarctica for years and share your concerns. Wanted to get there before the tourism gets too overdone or if it melts.

We will be taking a cruise leaving from Ushuaia. Also agree with you peninsula only doesn’t count which is why we picked the “crossing the circle” cruise which gets us inside the circle, weather permitting. I also chose the kayaking excursion which is limited to 8 people only , so when the zodiac boats go out with all the people, us 8 kayakers are away from the crowd exploring other areas.

Been looking for deals forever and booked over a year in advance as it’s quite expensive. Landed a balcony suite for the normal price of a double.

Went with Adventure Smith as the company as there are many. So far, no complaints and everything has been great with them.

Sounds like you picked some good options. I'm hoping tourism stays very limited and the untouched areas of the continent are truly amazing.

I'd be concerned about doing it as a cruise just because the Southern Ocean is no joke and even during "good weather" you could be rocking and rolling (I arrived/departed by plane which I realize isn't a common tourist option).

Yup, crossing the Drake will be “interesting”.

I felt the plane was “cheating” :)
The plane ride wasn't a picnic (on a C-141 without real seats, and you land on the sea ice...which is unnerving). I also try to avoid "big boats" whenever possible.

Have heard the same, heard many of the flights are cancelled.
Or worse yet, they boomerang (i.e. you take off and fly for 3+ hours to find that the weather has bombed out and you have to turn around and fly back to Christchurch).

Technically challenged again, surely someone must be able to make the above into a hyperlink. This is a list from the Century Travelers Club, it lists destinations. Example, Alaska and The United States are listed as separate destinations. I believe once you achieve 100 destinations, honor system, you apply for and get some sort of certification. If you can locate or print out the site, guarantee you will have a lot of fun with it. I'm at 40 destinations. I will follow and hope one of you "techies knows how to display the TCC countries & destinations. Official title: Geographic Directory of TCC Countries & Terrirtories

Germany, England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Honduras, Panama, Bahamas and Canada are all I have.

I got a tour of Noriega's house (outside the building, inside the walls) in Panama. That was really cool. Except the part about walking around with a heavily armed guard that didn't speak English.

Was this before or after Operation Just Cause?

And no refund of course
Well, flight was free because I was on an NSF science mission. So all of my travel (extra hotel nights in Christchurch, extra per diem, etc) was all covered. So there are worse things than being stuck in New Zealand for a few extra days. But it is a hassle to get up at 4 AM, put on all your extreme cold weather gear, schlep to the airport, do the safety brief, board the plane, ride for 5+ hours and end up in the same place you took off from. Fortunately, that only happened to me once. One other time we schlepped to the airport and then our flight was canceled. And once they called us at 3 AM to tell us not to come to the airport.
