They say they're considering new ideas to revamp, implicitly conceding that the quality has dipped in recent years. They don't mention but I think a factor in suspending could have been the number of top wrestlers taking Olympic redshirts.

It's sad to not have a formal kick-off competition, but the signs this thing needed to be put out to pasture really set in last year.

"Some of the proposed ideas and concepts required some extensive vetting".

I am curious. "All-Star" suggests the best of the best, but many coaches, even wrestlers, had become lukewarm to the event, as compared to decades ago. #1 vs #2 wasn't happening at nearly the frequency.

I'm struggling to come up with an idea/concept that "revitalizes" the event. Still curious though.

Bingo. Something marketed as an exhibition all the sudden had an effect on rankings. The matches either count or they don't.

I do not believe Hall vs Valencia killed it. It was just another data point in a long-running downhill slide for the event. Below are the match-ups for the previous three years in reverse order, 2018, then 2017, then 2016. Some pretty good match-ups, but others (pre-season rankings), were 6 vs 18, 12 vs 13, 4 vs 9, 1 vs 6, and on and on. Many top wrestlers stayed away, dating back years.
