I am flying into Ft. Lauderdale tomorrow morning and driving down to Key West. Is Alabama Jacks worth stopping by for lunch or is it just a crappy tourist trap?
Thanks for any advice.

most definitely!! We love that place. They have a smoke fish app that is wonderful. Their signature dish so to speak is the fried conch loaf, my wife loved, a little breadie for me, but still good!! Its a dump, but by god it is their dump!! It is only open to sunset, why? they won't let them spray for mosquitos , so when the sun goes down they come out.I am flying into Ft. It is Card Sound Road, and it's actually pretty well marked. Definitely worth a stop.most definitely!! We love that place. They have a smoke fish app that is wonderful. and the trip down from FLL to key west is fun!! That said, the turn for Alabama Jacks is difficult to see, IIRC you make a left from a turn lane of a 4 lane heavy why. I believe it is called Card Sound road. Instead of turning around and coming out the way we came in, we went straight and you come out back on a1a (?) but the drive is nothing spectacular, just back through the mangroves. there is a pay draw bridge you have to cross I think it was like $2.
Stop there for sure. Great place.I am flying into Ft. Lauderdale tomorrow morning and driving down to Key West. Is Alabama Jacks worth stopping by for lunch or is it just a crappy tourist trap?

agree with all of those choices. a new one for us is DJ's clam shack right on DuVall (sp?) st in Key West. There is a Diners drive in dive show on it, and we thought it was great. It is Card Sound Road, and it's actually pretty well marked. Definitely worth a stop.
So is No Name Pub on Big Pine....great pizza, but we'll off the beaten track.
Hogfish Bar and Grill on Stock Island
Awesome, thank you. Heading down again in May and need a new spot in the rotation.agree with all of those choices. a new one for us is DJ's clam shack right on DuVall (sp?) st in Key West. There is a Diners drive in dive show on it, and we thought it was great.
The locals don't tell you because they don't need it ruined by a bunch of tourist!! At least that's what may sis tells me after living there for 10 yrs. fwiw. Snappers is s place they like as wellI spend a lot of time in homestead and key largo for work and this place has never been suggested by any of the locals as a place to check out... that's worrisome. Menu looks like mostly fried bar food.
Key west itself is a crappy tourist trap. The drive down is great, but it's all downhill from there. If it's closer to dinner time, hit up snappers on key largo. Their twin lobster dinner is fantastic. Mrs. Mac's is a great place to get a slice of key lime pie on key largo.

Let me know. Probably been 20 years since I've been. I'm usually towing a boat so I can't stop anyway....but be good to hear if it's still any good.I'll go there tonight and see for myself.
As mentioned it closes at sunset.I'll go there tonight and see for myself.
agreed!! Just don't hit any deer!!!!Definitely try to find and stop at The no name pub
here you go, this might be more you style!! and the locals will probably laugh as well, because they've never been here!! But you're on expense account, and as they've said, 'here at little Palm Island we always expect you to have your first choice!' And don't forget you can only get there by land or sea, which cuts down on the rift raft!!I'm a big fan of joes stone crab, if they are in season, that's my first stop on every trip down here.
So I talked with my co-worker who lives on key largo about Alabama jacks. I mentioned I heard it was good and he laughed at me. He said it was an experience, and as long as you weren't expecting good food or a view that it wasn't bad. So I went in without expectation. It was and interesting experience, but it wasn't for me... especially while I'm on an expense account. That's not to say others won't like it. But after being here a while and by necessity eating out every day, I'm really tired of eating out, so that didn't help.
Not a big fan of Alabama Jacks. We love Snappers in Key Largo. Also love Key West. Yes it's touristy but we have our favorite spots. A lot of whay Key West is is off of Duval Street - cool idelendent businesses. Blue Heaven, Louies Backyard. We usually spend a lot of time on the water. Magrove kayaking is great. Also like to stay at Pier House.I am flying into Ft. Lauderdale tomorrow morning and driving down to Key West. Is Alabama Jacks worth stopping by for lunch or is it just a crappy tourist trap?

There are still some ok spots, but they've pretty much managed to ruin it.Not a big fan of Alabama Jacks. We love Snappers in Key Largo. Also love Key West. Yeah. True. And the outlet shops. But as Jimmy wrote...there's still some magic left in this tourist town.....There are still some ok spots, but they've pretty much managed to ruin it.
Fastbuck Freddie's being replaced by a CVS is a sure sign of the apocalypse
