Temple, who went 6-6 last year and lost to PSU on Nov. 15th last year, 30-13 is a decent opponent. They return a ton of talent but so does PSU from that same team last year. In fact, close to only ten players from the starting 44 players last year won't be available to play Saturday. Temple is a quality program coached by a quality staff, but PSU is a better program with better players up and down the field. If PSU plays a clean game, this should be a solid win to start off the year. Last year, we played in the middle of our worst run (going 2-6 at one point). This was one of our best rushing games (254 yards) but passing was bad (112 yards passing with 2 INT's). After being tied 3-3 at the half, a 38 yard run by Lynch kind of broke it open. Defense played well but the majority of T's offense came from a 75 yard TD pass. Without that, T would have had only 170 total yards. Overall, a very sloppy game with 8 total turnovers. For two well coached teams, I don't see this happening again. Thoughts:

  • Last year's first game was in Dublin. This was great for the program but, when scheduled it was not anticipated that we'd have a new staff. The logistics of this game was quite a challenge for the new staff. Fortunately, it was just as challenging for UCF who was unexpectedly trying to establish a new QB after losing Bortles to the NFL early. After the game, flying back from Dublin, limited practice time too. I always felt like the staff was fighting up hill in terms of time available for game prep and in consideration of ongoing injuries all of last year.
  • This should be a new season. I look for a much more complex and much more crisp offense. Last year's offense seemed to be limited to about ten plays, I look for a lot more this year.
  • Defense should be awesome. I love the D-line. At linebacker, love Wartman and I feel like Cabrinda is going to be the next awesome PSU linebacker. Secondary is going to be physical, fast and deep.
  • Offensively, the line (obviously) is the key to the season. I have great fears about Paris Palmer due to his physical build. I suspect that they will move a tweener (guy too big for DE, too small for DT) and bull rush him. The rest of the players will be improved. But the RT is the key to the line, and this is our biggest challenge. I am surprised they didn't flip the LT and RT to have our weakness at RT for a right handed QB.
  • Look for Temple to keep seven on the line. They will continue to bring 5 or 6 every play and try to stuff the run game, confuse the blocking and put pressure on the QB. PSU's defense will be to attack the perimeter. This means bubble screens, end arounds, and jet sweeps. This defense will also be vulnerable to quick runs where the RB can get through the first level and then get into the secondary. A couple of these would force T to play a more traditional defense. T is betting the line blocking will be confusing so this is a big key to the game.
  • In addition, T will play their CB's tight on our WR's thinking that their rush will mitigate the time their CB will have to stick to our WR. This year, many of our WR's are over 200 lbs and fast. Chucking them at the line to disrupt their pattern will be challenging. In addition, we've got a couple of burners in Thompkins and Polk to stretch the field. If the line can provide a little time, there cold be some big plays.
  • I look for Gesicki to be huge this year. He simply stood out at the blue/white game. he just looks like the best athlete on the field. He reminded me of the days watching Arrington; he just looked the part better than everyone else.
  • I know everyone is pumped about the true freshmen class. It will be interesting to see how Franklin roles them in and out during the game depending upon how it progresses. It will be interesting to see how they use them as the year moves on. Clearly, Barkley is going to be a big part of the offense and that is going to be fun to watch.
  • That brings us to the kicking game. I am afraid we are going to have a "ficken" season; meaning his first season where we could kick a FG to save our lives. Julius will be fun to watch as he has a strong leg and is "unique". Punting will be just as suspect. Its honestly hard to believe that our kicking could be this weak. This is very, very scary and could suck the life out of this team if we start missing FG and shanking punts. Both kickers will be on a short leash.
  • In KR, we finally have some depth to staff these teams. However, we are very young. The returners are all Soph and Fresh. Look for some turnovers. On the plus side, big, fast and powerful. Should be exciting to watch as long as we don't turn it over. Its hard to be worse than we were last year in the coverage and return games (while placekicking was a strong suit).
Overall, this is CJF's first year. Last year was his honeymoon season and given the sanctions and the first game being in Dublin, was quite a challenge. Toward the end of last year, it appeared he may have sacrificed some games to keep redshirts in place. Playing only 40 ~ 50 kids, and with the revolving door on the o-line, it is not surprising that our offense was so confused and shaky last year. Until we prove better, this is where we will be attacked game in and game out. Defenses will play a high risk, high reward scheme. As such, will be vulnerable to the big play. At the same time, this offense (if the line can hold up) is a big play offense. We are as strong as any team since the 94 team at the skill positions.

Temple is a good team. But I see PSU being physically dominant and feel we will win with a similar spread as last year.

Add to that a low trajectory on FGs and even xtra points and we could see some blocked kicks as well. Especially the longer tries.

I have read that before but not sure why the perception Julius has a low trajectory on his kicks. I do not believe that is the case but we shall see. Regardless, here is a prediction, Julius will have fewer kicks blocked than Ficken had last season.

Until they prove otherwise, this OL is a HUGE liability! I look for for the same sloppy, Ill-conceived offense, as last year. I think it'll be a sloppy, sloppy snoozefest that'll be something like 13-10.
I do hope I am waaaaay wrong about the OL, and we hang 40+ on them!

Just a realist. I hope we go 15-0, and crush everyone in our path.
But, if our OL hasn't improved from last year(which is still up in the air), then we'll be lucky to win 6 games.
I do think the OL will be better(and by better, I mean bad, as opposed to dumpster fire).
Like I said, until proven otherwise, the OL is a HUGE liability!
If they don't improve, we may be in for another season of boring, boring games!
That being said, I hope I am back here on Saturday, proclaiming how great the OL played.

Nice job - getting me pumped for this weekend. Going to be at the game and look forward to reading summaries on line from people who watched at home.

Also, you missed Bell at LB, who I think is the best of the bunch.

Nice job.
I was listening to Phil and Jed on Monday night. (both are pretty high on this years team btw).
Anyway both Jed and Phil said how much of a toll that Dublin game took on both the staff and the players.
The win was great but listening to them that game had a lot to do with how we fell apart at that point in Nov.
Also agree about Franklin not wanting to pull some of the red shirts that late in the season.

I noticed it during the B&W game as did some others so I think thats why there is a concern there.
Hopefully it was just "perception" on my part.

yep, Bell makes plays from sideline to sideline. We are thin at LB, but the starters will be solid.

I hadn't heard that from Jeb and Phil. Can never get their streaming to work and have lost interest. The staff looked like they were frantic all year and they seem to be much more settled now. We'll see as we get into the season but they seem to be more comfortable in their skins.

I am pretty confident we will protect the passer much better this year. Experience and understanding the system will help. I have my doubts that we will run the ball significantly better, we really are not that big up front. Both tackles are barely 300 lbs. The real key to an improved season is staying healthy on Defense. Our starting 11 should be championship quality. That will win us and keep us in most games. A few injuries, (LB), could really hurt.

Uh oh! Last year was a spread of 17 points. Get ready to hear from the "Temple will be going to the Fiesta Bowl Crowd".

I love the DT's, but the DE's scare the shit out of me.

If any backup LB's get to play, I iwll be looking forward to seeing them, especially Reeder. I have seen enough of Wooten to know he is a special teams player.

I think our DE's will be just fine, they played real well in the spring game if I remember correctly. We also have some good depth there. Its not like last years DE's were dominating and we still had a good defense.

steam #8 has been working for me, lately.

Apparently, today it's all the rage to call this game the "upset alert" game. McShay, Herbstreit, some others calling this an upset alert game. The 19 returning starters for Temple sited as a factor, by McShay and Hack "not fitting the offense" last year.

I don't agree, but we'll see on Saturday.

Anything is possible, but barring turnovers, someone is going to have to explain to me how Temple is going to score on our defense. I understand that our OLine is still a major question mark, but we have an abundance of skilled offensive players, while Temple should have a good defense, I don't see them shutting down our wide outs, tight ends and backs the entire game.

Not fitting the offense. That's pretty funny. The only QB I could imagine who would fit that offense last year would be one who takes the snap and runs for his life.

Some schools have guys who could do that--and pickup yards. We did not. Put a Robinson behind that line, and he would have been able to do something.

That's not a knock against Hack, BTW. He's just not that kind of QB, and that's ok.

Phil Steele is a much more accurate forecaster than McShay in college football. Steele says PSU will play well and win comfortably. Again, playmakers. Who has playmakers? Penn state has playmakers. Temple has one receiver, who we will need to make sure doesn't get open deep on us, that's it.

A side note; Temple's number one pass rusher is out with a hamstring. So, it's 10 of 11 starters, not 11 of 11.

That may, or may not be a factor in the game.

JMO but I think it might be a pretty big factor. Praise Martin-Oguike is very good and I've heard NFL potential mentioned with him.
Temple released their depth chart and if their weights are accurate the defensive front for Temple is on the smaller side, especially at DE.

I know this is included in your post, but just to highlight (even more) how dire it really was:

ie, each week, of the 4 starters (aside from Smith - who was in and out of the lineup with injuries), 3 HAD NEVER TAKEN A SINGLE SNAP AS A COLLEGE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN, prior to the UCF game.

That is ASTOUNDING......and shows just what the offense was dealing with.

McShay doesn't know jack. McShay couldn't pour piss out of a boot if the directions were written on the bottom of the heel.
