Can anyone come up with the names of a few offspring of very successful people that have exceded their successful parents performance in the same endeavor. I am having a hard time coming up with any. We should probably exclude someone in the financial world.

What got me thinking about it was a post on HR saying JoJo has John Smiths genes so he will figure it out. Will Caels boys achieve more than he did? Seems to me the offspring always come up a little short. Anybody?

Sorry to bring basketball up, but Steph Curry certainly has found greater success than his dad, Dell.

Was John Smith's father a wrestler? Or Caels? They certainly have exceeded their father's accomplishments.

Any field except financial is fine. What I am looking for is i.e. world class say like if bruce jenners son would have won 2 tri-athalons or michael jordans son would have won 10 championships or verne gagna's son greg would have won 10 belts. Along those lines

The Manning boys of the NFL would be another example, although I don't know that Archie reached the levels of success you're looking for.

He's looking for someone who is "hall of fame" caliber who was exceeded by offspring. That is indeed rare. Griffey Sr and Bobby Bonds were never the top of their sport. Same with Del Curry and Archie Manning.

In the long history of MLB, there are zero 2nd generation Hall of Fame members

exactly what i am looking for. thanks

I get what he's saying now, but the OP moved the goalposts a bit. I think just about all of us would consider Dell Curry and Archie Manning "very successful".

I can't think of an example of a hall of fame type/best ever type being exceeded by his/her offspring, I feel as if there may be some examples of this amongst some of the Olympic sports, but I can't recall a specific example right now.

Griffey and Bonds would come close imo. Karl Malone's daughter Cheryl Ford? Sandy Alomar produced some sons who could really play. That is all I can think of even close.

Archie Manning was a Pro Bowl quarterback, so I definitely think the Mannings fit the bill.

How about Dubya? His dad was leader of the free world for one term and he had two terms.

(Though I wouldn't describe the terms themselves as successful...)

Archie Manning's place in football history is nowhere near the place John Smith and Cael occupy in wrestling history.

I think the OP is looking for legends whose accomplishments were met or exceeded by their offspring. I can't think of any.

Up the family tree is the fascinating story of the Bushes, great grandfather George Walker, president USGA, founder of the Walker Cup, sloane kettering hospital, Madison square garden, NY mets, Davis Cup, and more businesses than you could count. All based way back on slavery btw. Fascinating family. Back to wrestling.

More seriously, would we consider Jack Harbaugh enough of a coaching legend to qualify?

Octavian exceeded the performance of his very successful adopted father (and ~distant relative) Julius Caesar in the same endeavor.

Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen? I know Charlie is a bit off the rails but he's had a lot of success in the tv/movie industry.

Grandpa Smith did not wrestle it all started with Leroy Jr. I would say Mark and Chris Perry though. Mark Sr was an AA both sons national champs

Shaqs son might end up in this conversation in the future. Also rapper the game has a very talented young basketball player in his house

William Bragg and his son won a Nobel prize in physics.
Aage Bohr's Wikipedia page says:
"[Aage Bohr] and his father were one of the six pairs of fathers and sons who have both won the Nobel Prize and one of the four pairs who have both won the Nobel Prize in Physics."

How would folks compare the coaching careers of Bill and Rob Koll?

6x all-star Prince Fielder > 3x all-star dad Cecil Fielder, though dad fell short of HOF numbers.

Don't know enough about stock car racing to know whether Dale Earnhardt Jr surpassed his father Dale Sr but I know he's been around forever and pretty successful. Jr won the Daytona 500 2x and dad only once.

No... jr not even close to his dad. He probably won't even win one championship let alone 7 like his father.

We can't keep moving the goalposts even farther than the OP moved them! ;)

The OP has already moved the goalposts to "world class." If we further require John Smith- and Cael Sanderson-level excellence, then we'd be talking about something more like "top 5 all-time (among Americans)" than "world class".

Archie Manning was world class. He was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. That is world class for a college player since nobody but Americans play Football. And he was Pro Bowl in the NFL, which is world class for a pro player.

LTG Arthur MacArthur Jr earned the Congressional Medal or Honor followed by his son, General of the Army (5-Star) Douglas MacArthur, who also earned the Congressional Medal of Honor.
