Seemingly sure?! Kerk has torn knee you dork
Dork? When did he tear it if you know so much? It was wrapped. That doesn't mean it was torn unless that's been confirmed. Even so, Kerk was the guy until Steveson came back. Starocci and Nolf won championships on one leg, essentially. I expected Kerk to make the final no matter what as long as Steveson wasn't across from him. I don't think this was a complete fluke. Hendrickson impressed me when I saw him at Carver. He may not beat Gable, but he'll give him a match I think.

The David Taylor Effect of Penn State getting ten All Americans and a very big lead in the team race despite a crippling injury and several self-inflicted miscues at various matches?
There's no "despite" when you're the dominant team or the defending champ. If you take the mat you don't make excuses when you lose. I expected us to have 5-7 finalists and 3-5 champs. We now have 3 and we'll be lucky if all 3 win.

You just have to shake your head. 10AAs, probably score the 3rd highest point total in finals history when it’s all said and done (I.e. over 158), and there’s all this moaning.
I'm not moaning. Are you people that insecure? We've been dominant for years now and will continue to be the top team for a while. I'm giving David Taylor credit. I did not expect Oklahoma State to do this well.

Did you watch the match? That thing is torn. Greg is gutting this out big-time. Again.

I’d close by telling you to be grateful, but I’m not so sure you’re actually a fan of the team. The KK vibe is strong in you.

Oklahoma State beat two of our seemingly sure finalists and has as many finalists as we do. Not a bad first season at all for a first time college coach. It's a good thing this Penn State team had so much balance.
Oklahoma State had the higher seed in both of those matches.

It's kinda hard to call the lower seed a "seemingly sure finalist."

PS, Oklahoma State is in 3rd, very far behind us and behind Not Taylor Coached Nebraska.

Yes, the team he transfered in helped out greatly this year lol
Hendrickson and Hamiti were the big transfers. If you don't want to give Hendrickson any credit that's fine, but he's improved. Hamiti was a 3-6 kind of guy before this year. Iowa transferred in AA's in Teemer and Parco. Neither placed.

KK vibe? Not following.

I'm grateful, but I want PSU to not just win but dominate. I expected this team to crush the record with 10 AAs and multiple champions. Now we'll be lucky to have 3. Hopefully we'll have multiple 3rd-placers. You hate to see guys like Beau and Greg end their careers in the consys. You hate to see a two-time finalist like Levi not make it back as a junior.

You can blame injuries or bad luck, but the fact is PSU did not perform as well as expected in the semis. Oklahoma State performed considerably better than expected. I'm chosing gosing to give credit where it's due rather than make excuses for what our team didn't do. I do enough of that for our football team.

I noticed in David's post-semis interview he was very reserved and almost dejected sounding when talking about the 174 and 285 matches. First I thought he was just tired from a long day, but he perked up a lot when talking about the 125 match (even before DC came in). I think it was hard on him emotionally to coach against Levi and Kerk

A seeding difference like that makes no difference. Kerk was the defending champ. He's beaten Hendrickson before. I expected him to make the finals.

I think DT had an on par tournament, not some huge leap. He brought in several high end transfers with previous high placements who ended up placing high. Congrats. He didn’t take a bunch of bums who instantly dominated. If he took a guy like Plott and he beat Carter, maybe I would have agreed with you.

If you want to post about a coach getting his team to completely ball out with 5-6 guys wrestling the best they ever have, you should start another topic about Mark Manning.

He went from 9th under Smith to 3rd with 3 finalists. Granted only Spratley will be back. Cael was 9th his first year at PSU (from 17th the year before) with one finalist. Apples and oranges maybe with NIL and the transfer portal, I suppose. And David Taylor doesn't have a David Taylor waiting in the wings for next year. Yeah, Nebraska is #2, but come on, nobody is worrying about Nebraska long term. Manning's done a good job this year.

Let’s analyze the DT effect

125. Spratley had the biggest improvement.
133 took a previous qualifier and didn’t qualify him
141. Took a previous R16 to another R16
149. Took a previous R16 to another R16
157. Took a previous 3x qualifier to a 7/8 place
165. Took a previous 4/4/7 to a 7/8 place
174. Took a previous 6/6/nq to finalist. Most fans knew Hamiti bumping to 174 would be an improvement. As much credit DT deserves, Wisconsin coaches deserve any n all flack for starving Hamiti.
184. Took a 6/6/2 to a 3-6th
197. Took a 4x qualifier n R16 to an 0-2 performance
HWT. Took a 3/3 to 2nd. Not to knock Hendrickson, but clearly Kerk is injured. Hardly some huge jump.

Good tournament, but on par seems fair. Acting like DT had some huge effect is not founded in fact.

Good analysis. But I look at 9th to 3rd with 3 finalists in one year after the program lost a 4-time runner-up as a pretty good tournament for a guy who had zero NCAA coaching experience prior to this year. Two high-level AA transfers coming in and making the finals bodes well for his future with transfers. Look at what Iowa has done with transfers. Buchanan is in the final, but most of the high level transfers there haven't fared all that well.

Cael started out 9th (up from 17th) before winning in 2011, but he'd had some high-finishing teams at ISU before. I don't think Oklahoma State is an immediate threat to us, but they may take Iowa's place in the rebuilding seasons if we have any going forward.

Looks like we have another taylor jock sniffer. Brackets and matchups matter, PSU had a bad tournament and still clinched the title on friday. Taylor may get 3rd but probably fall to 4th. I posted before that PSU could have only 1 champ or 6.

Outstanding tournament for Nebraska and Okie State. Congratulations. The sport needs more to excel. Love the Nits but the sport needs others to elevate. Some tight losses for PSU but that happens. All 10 guys are alive and hoping they all win their last matches of the year!

OMG, are we becoming Iowa?

This board is a bigger disappointment than yesterday’s sessions.

There is a difference between being disappointed for someone and being disappointed in someone.
I’m disappointed for a number of wrestlers not meeting their goals this tournament. I’m disappointed in you for typing some of these words that are so opposite of what this wrestling program stands for. Being grateful for what we have and are given is not making excuses. It makes us better people.

I'm still disappointed we only have 3 finalists when we definitely should have had 10. I have expectations daggummitttt!

Folks lose me the moment they say my expectations. Like...Who are you? I truly believe, some folks love to be miserable.

No.

Spratley and Jamison wrestled there last year for Smith.

ALL of this year's transfers came in after Taylor was hired.

“Came in” isn’t the point. Yes, school starts in the fall so that’s when they arrived.

Taylor was announced/hired in May.

Hamiti announced his commitment to OK ST in March.

Hendrickson announced after David was hired, yes.

So your expectations were wrong, which means the team sucks? It seems you have a case of little brain syndrome, which is no fault of your own. I hope for your sake you don’t have the other syndrome as well (like AJF).

You don’t need NCAA coaching experience to make a difference. He coached a club down the road from PSU and turned them into a second tier (fringe first tier) power house club. He had the experience to get the most out of his guys. A good coach is a good coach if they have the experience and not whether they have experience at a certain level

David not telling Bo about him not wrestling was a strategic move obviously. Wrestling is a selfish sport. It's an individual sport and how Cael balances his team is truly a testament to his abilities.

Bo likely would have medaled at 86 that year and that would allow him to get the OTT Finals Spot automatically. This was pre COVID. DT was getting ACL surgery and then likely would have very short time to get into shape, wrestle an entire tournament then wrestle Bo, who is fresh and waiting for him.

The Olympics come every 4 years and as we saw, by 2024, DT was older and someone younger was catching up to him. If he missed 2020 (2021 later), it's very likely his Olympic dream never happens. Similarly, injuries are ultimately private things so I don't think anyone was entitled to know how healthy DT was anyways.

But since he left, it's obviously why resentment is exacerbated now. Similarly, Brooks all but saying it was DT who leaked his issue (that he would 100% get cleared for btw), I don't think DT is anyone's favorite person in the room anymore, including the M2 kids.
I think the issue is that wrestling while individual sport doesn’t mean you have to act selfishly . The issue I have is that David acted dishonorably (that may strong but can’t think of another way of putting it) if you can’t go why not make so your teammate succeeds

If you are going to make comparisons then make an appropriate comparison of Caels first season coaching at the NCAA level.
Iowa State (last year under Bobby Douglas) 13th place finish NCAA and 4th at Conference

Caels first ever coaching experience: 2nd place finish NCAA and 1st at conference

I expected 10 finalists and 10 champs. You didn’t? LOL. This obviously hasn’t been the best tournament ever for a Cael team, but this team has been great. You can’t set a scoring record every year. It’s amazing to have 10 AAs. I hope we end up with 3 champs and 7 3rds to celebrate, too.

As someone said last night, I’m disappointed FOR the kids who didn’t reach their goals. Especially Lilledahl. He was in deep on the legs twice at the end of his match, once late in the third and once in SV. He finishes 90% of those shots and I’m heartbroken for him that he didn’t this time (but credit Seymour for his defense in those situations, too). I’m not disappointed BY this team at all. They are winning by a large margin yet again and wrestling like the champions that they are.

"I expected" lol.

You did none of the work.

Declaring your expectations and how the team didn't meet them, says more about you than about the team.
