Once again, the Buccos shoot themselves in the foot by waiting too long to trade a veteran:

The pirates have terrible luck. They were close to trading him to the Dodgers but end up keeping him and he gets arrested 2 months later.
I’m sure neither the pirates and dodgers knew about this.

Eh, who really cares at this point ?
As long as their media contract is so cheap, the organization will not be competitive.
( I did not realize the pitcher was an alleged child predator when I wrote this ).

Yeah, this is just terrible luck. I'm sure he will deny it, let's see how it plays out. The word was that the Dodgers' offer was really weak.

Though it's not anyone in the Pirates management's fault, this could and probably should trigger a massive change, even in ownership. The Pirates brand is in dire need of a makeover, even it's for only perception.

Problem is there’s nothing that will cause ownership to change. The stadium could be empty for every single game and he still makes money, so he’s never selling. I give up.

You're right. I had just deleted the post for that very reason.

I look at the Indians and see a team that went for it when they had a window. They signed a guy like Edwin Encarnacion. The Pirates would never do that, despite those being very similar markets. The Pirates are my team, but I'm not supporting them again until the ownership changes, or it changes how it operates.

I am in Dallas today so internet is spotty. I believe I read something that Vazquez is also suspected of criminal advances towards minors in Westmoreland County. So the story is getting worse, if that is even possible.

Millionaire, MLB career and freedom all up in smoke. You tell me what the hell is going on.

The Pirates as a club are a pathetic joke. We know Nutting is a cheap, greedy, money-grubbing bastard, that is plain to see.

What I find amusing is gutless wonders like Huntington, Coonelly and Hurdle. As long as they are being paid, they checked their pride at the door. Hurdle has been mailing it in for three years which is disgraceful. There is not a single MLB club anywhere - not the O's, not Florida, not nobody - that would hire Huntington for further employment in any capacity, not even selling popcorn. All he is, is Nutting's rent boy. And he likes it that way.

FWIW, I believe the charges in Westmoreland County are related to the same girl. Not like it makes it better.

You can add the Brewers to that as well. They're in an even smaller market and they do the same sort of thing. I remember Nutting & Co. promising that they would add when they became competitive. Still waiting. They can talk Burnett all they want, but they would not even have done that if the Yankees hadn't picked up more than half his salary.

The Brewers are a great example. They were willing to tank to rebuild. The Pirates for some reason insist on doing just enough to win 70-80 games. That's horrible. Go ahead and tank, lose 100 games, who cares. As long as you're willing to spend once your top draft picks start coming up. The Brewers went and got Yelich, Lorenzo Cain, and Yasmani Grandal. That is the key step the Pirates refused to ever take. I went to bat for the ownership and management for years between 2011-2015. I really believed (and still do) that they were doing all the right things to build a winner in that period. The problem was they never took that last step: spending on a couple free agents to fill the final holes. The window passed, and now they want to hang on to mediocrity instead of scrapping it and starting anew. Hanging on to mediocrity is the worst possible stage.

The whole situation is just awful but he was still under control for 4 more years (I think 4) which means it really wouldn't have made a ton of sense to trade him unless the return was right. Not sure I trust the Pirates front office to make a good decision but Vasquez wasn't someone that they "waited on too long" unless they knew of these issues (including what happened with Crick).

If the pirates don’t clean house, we can assume they never will.
This is a team that is supposed to be rebuilding and getting better and instead has taken a big step backwards.
This team has already lost four more games than last year.
Yea they’ve had tons of injuries but the pitchers who weren’t hurt were terrible.
They have a few bright spots like Reynolds and Bell but they were far outweighed by the bad.
They need to clean house and bring in a new management team with a new plan.
The current management were too conservative in adding players when they were contending and did a terrible job rebuilding the team this year, especially in building this pitching staff.
