Nice setup. They’re pairing up films, “Dog Day Afternoon” with “Bonnie and Clyde,” “The French Connection” with “Taxi Driver,” “Tootsie” with “Victor/Victoria,” very creative and cool.

There are some really good films that TCM doesn’t show all that often, like “Atlantic City,” and “Midnight Express.”

For today, February 1, I’d say that if you haven’t seen “Sunrise,” you really should catch it when it’s on from 8-10pm. In my estimation it’s the second-best silent film ever, following “The Gold Rush.”

There are quite a few perhaps lesser known films, like “Sunrise,” that are really special, ones you would be glad to have caught, so as a public service I’ll give a head’s up when the time is right. Among these are “Bicycle Thieves,” “Holiday,” “Only Angels Have Wings,” and (last but not least) “My Favorite Year.” Trust your friend LionJim.

Maybe now I can sleep.

My Favorite Year with Peter O'Toole! The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is on today at 4 pm . I haven't looked further than Direct TV listing but always a good month

Thanks for the Link Jim, some interesting pairings and does make interesting watching. Glad to see TCM doing some innovative things and hopefully keep viewers and new ones and keep the channel going. Look forward to your updates, notice not much in the way of Westerns. Umbrellas of Cherborg is another oddly interesting movie that has no real peers

Yes, please share your recommendations. I am already up to speed on the mos othe recent, or uber popular movies, but would love to expand my appreciation for lesser knowns. I must say that I tried watching a silent movie once and it was tough to get through for me.

If regular TV fails me, which is often this time of the year, I head right to TCM. When I browse through the listings, I don't just look at the title of the movie, I look to see who is in it. You could be in for the surprise of your life. I was a big fan of the Tarzan movies with Johnny Weissmuller when I was growing up. One day I see it on TCM and made time to watch it. As I was watching the movie, who shows up as a big game hunter but Neil Hamilton. People in my age group might remember him as Commissioner Gordon from the Batman camp TV series in the 60's.

Monday, February 4, my favorite western of all time, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon. Ford +Wayne would be enough to watch it but the drinking scene with Victor McLaughlin & company near the end is the cherry and whip cream on top.

Ford and Wayne were always great.

Movies in the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s were exponentially better than they are now. And the funny thing is, they didn't have to swear up a storm or be continuously politically correct to do it. Maybe that's WHY they were better. They had to actually write good script and make the movie believable.

The last straw for me was the remake of True Grit. I literally fell asleep in the middle of the film. What a piece of absolute garbage. The contrast between the John Wayne version and the remake was like night and day. I have probably watched the John Wayne version 10 or 15 times. Great movie!

I wouldn't watch the remake for a million dollars. ............well........ I guess if one of you guys want to pay me a million dollars, I'll watch it, but I'll need to put toothpicks in my eyes to keep me awake. : ^ )

Glen Campbell kept "True Grit" from being an awesome movie. He singlehandedly brought it down to merely good.

Always look forward to it each year and try to catch some movies I haven't seen yet.

For any classic movie fan in PA, if you haven't yet, take a visit to the Jimmy Stewart Museum in Indiana. Watch a movie in their theater and look around. Not a huge place but a nice look at some classic Hollywood locally.

I can actually appreciate modern movies, but get your point about the subtlety of classic old movies.

North By Northwest Saturday at 3 30. I like the Oscar theme and some hidden gems but also would be nice to see a compilation of just best movies some other month . Sometimes the Oscars don't say it all. One Cary Grant movie in a month of classics?

Lol, fear not, my friend. I will let you know when “Holiday,” “Only Angels Have Wings,” “The Awful Truth,” and “Penny Serenade” are due on.
I looked quick and saw North by Northwest! I try and keep up ! Father Goose should be on there! Thanks Jim I will try and keep up as well !

I did a binge watch of Hitchcock movies. Awesome stuff, really. Great depth and range

Oh, and “Suspicion” is on at 11:45 this morning!
I stand corrected. Head bowed:^) I have always found that with few exceptions Cary Grant movies were always great entertainment and how he never won a n Oscar for any of his movies ?

If black panther wins this year then the Oscars are truly dead. Can’t beleive it won the guild.

Watched Sunrise. Very good, and the theme and how they portrayed it was mildly surprising. Thanks for the recommendation!

I agree. It was an action movie. I enjoyed it. But it is like giving Indiana Jones or Spiderman best picture

I thought it was right up their with aquaman. Not that great. It wasn’t even close to the dark knight

They showed The Best Years of our LIves and Mrs. Minniver late last night and I missed both. I key in on TCM as they often show interesting older movies I enjoy. Jean Arthur, Joel McCrea, Susan Hayward, the John Ford crew, so many classic movies from the Golden Era of movies to enjoy.

The good ones seem on late and a lot of obscure stuff that weren't really good but had a nomination for costumes or something. To each their own I liked it better when they were showing better Oscar movies . Joel McCrea is best not as well known actor. Sullivan's Travels.

"Holiday" will be on two weeks from today at 4:00 am. Just did my two week Comcast DVR programming.

Yes, and immediately followed by "The Awful Truth." Both classics.

"Holiday."

Grant's best screwball comedies are His Girl Friday and The Philadelphia Story.

“Holiday” isn’t a screwball comedy; it’s actually a drama which Grant and Hepburn (and Lew Ayres) bring to another level. If you’re asking me to rank the greatest screwball comedies, I’d go “Bringing Up Baby,” “His Girl Friday,” “The Awful Truth,” and “The Philadelphia Story,” in that order. Please note that Cary Grant is in each of these films.
