OT: 31 Days of Oscar starts today, February 1 on TCM

The good ones seem on late and a lot of obscure stuff that weren't really good but had a nomination for costumes or something. To each their own I liked it better when they were showing better Oscar movies . Joel McCrea is best not as well known actor. Sullivan's Travels.
“Sullivan's Travels” is every bit as good as you say, but it wasn’t nominated for any Oscars. Years ahead of its time.

Yup just saying Joel McCrea made some great movies and that is his best in my opinion and Veronica Lake was great as well. Hard to tell sometimes as to why who got nominated sometimes

“Holiday” isn’t a screwball comedy; it’s actually a drama which Grant and Hepburn (and Lew Ayres) bring to another level. If you’re asking me to rank the greatest screwball comedies, I’d go “Bringing Up Baby,” “His Girl Friday,” “The Awful Truth,” and “The Philadelphia Story,” in that order. Please note that Cary Grant is in each of these films.

Nah. Grant is too goofy in Bringing Up Baby. I prefer his smart, debonaire character in HGF & the others. And the Philadelphia Story has a better script than The Awful Truth. Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House would be my third choice. Or Topper.

I'd have Arsenic and Old Lace up there as one of Grants best comedies.

On the Waterfront followed by East of Eden at 12:15 this late night. East of Eden by far best of James Dean

Last Summer my family did a grand tour of the National Parks in Utah and I demanded that we stop at Monument Valley (not a Natl Park) specifically because I love those Ford westerns. It was really cool to be in that space. The scenery is even more incredible that you imagined.
Agree Ned. Our visit to Monument Valley was the highlight of our tour and mountain climbing adventure a while back. Monument Valley is like nowhere else I have ever seen such unique, majestic, mammoth natural features.

Monument Valley is the long term favorite of both mine and my wife. The Grand Tetons are right up there along with the view of Mt. Katahdin driving from the southeast on the Baxter State Park road. Trying to rank the majesty of our great nation is a futile effort in repetition and personal taste coupled with the memories, photos, and experiences during each visit. I tend to rank by first sight emotional response and then the desire to return and enjoy the view again and again.

They showed Giant yesterday morning and I caught the last half of the movie. I heard of it for many years but never watched any of it until this opportunity. It was quite impressive.

I loved the end where the two toddlers, one Hispanic and one white were standing together and the camera did a closeup of their eyes. One set brown and the other blue while they played The Eyes of Texas.

It seemed very appropriate as the state is a mix of both and they were enjoying the company of each other with no prejudice instilled yet while the movie was filled with it. A lovely story of true friendship and loyalty.

I like the 1st half of Giant the best, James Dean as the cocky cowhand in the old trucks and drilling for oil . I have seen it several times.

I finally managed to stay awake for all of The Last Picture Show Saturday night . That is a really good film
